Mount Gay Black Barrel Double Casks Blend
Charred bourbon casks push this so hard toward whiskey that a couple of members half-jokingly call it "whisky." Expect toffee, vanilla, oak and warm baking spice, with soft orange and apricot fruit underneath. Barbados balance without the sweetness of the range, though a little alcohol still pokes through at 43%. Most treat it as an easy, spicy everyday pour.

The nose is quite spicy with notes of allspice and vanilla. Some fruit in the background. Similar to apricot. The palate has way more fruit than the nose. It rather sweet, lots of brown sugar notes. Some wood. But the fruit is definitely taking centre stage. The finish is medium to long with more bitter notes of bourbon and chocolate coming out. It's a brilliant rum, especially for the price and a big step up from the Mount Gay Eclipse. The bitterness of the finish is all I can really downgrade it on.

Tasted this robust and dry rum during my recent visit to Barbados. It’s a blend of molasses based rum distilled in their column respectively one of their pot stills. It’s aged separately for 3 to 7 years before blended and aged for 6 months more in charred Bourbon casks. The nose is woody, sweet, spicy, fruity with scents of caramel, toffee, ginger, vanilla and apricot. At the palate it’s dry, woody, sweet, spicy and fruity with flavors of toffee, caramel, chocolate, cinnamon, pepper and banana. The finish is medium long.

Very good PLV, good companion in corn'n oil or in shaken drinks. A little too alcoholic for me to drink neat, so I'd rather invest a few ducats more for the XO. But overall a decent rum
Review by Rumpalumpa
I really like this Mount Gay because it tastes great but is also very affordable, so you can mix a cocktail with it from time to time. The ageing in freshly distilled barrels is very clear, so it is very reminiscent of bourbon.

Very good price-performance ratio
Review by Eric Frechin
It's an entry-level rum in this brand. So it stays fairly linear on sweet woody-toffee-caramel-vanilla and sweet spices. The finish is short. Overall, there's a touch of alcohol despite the low titration. Good rum for cocktails

Whisky & Rom Festival 2023 28.10.2023 This is a retaste and it's pretty good looking at the price tag. Tried it on Coca Cola and that's a great mix. ------------------- This rum is really well balanced in richness, spicyness and sweetness. Another great rum from Barbados. Price to quality is very good.

Very nice and good price tag. Take this and not eclipse.

Good nose, spicy taste follow sweet and slight bitter taste. Not bad sipper for the price I paid

Ein wunderbarer Barbados Rum. Kokos, Vanille, Kakao. Weich und rund. Etwas teuer und er kommt nicht ganz an seinen großen Bruder ran, der regulär auch zu teuer ist. Glücklicherweise gibt es ständig gute Angebote.

Lunchtime dessert. Full of caramel, vanilla and a hint of spice. In the taste intense sweetness, caramel, vanilla, intensely reminiscent of bourbon. The price performance is quite adequate, but the sweetness is beyond my taste profile.
Review by Solidfunk
Oak, bourbon and vanilla. Caramel. Pours golden. In the mouth more oak. Pretty smooth feel. Maybe a little perfume. Maybe some orange peel and ginger. Short finish. Just OK straight, save it for mixes. Had a glass at a Thai restaurant.

I thought I had reviewed this a while ago when I had recieved it as a gift. It’s always been a smooth sipper, but the longer it’s been open, the smoother it’s gotten. I’d argue it’s gotten lighter on fronts of smell, flavor, and finish but that’s what happens with open bottles. This rum has been my goto for stirred cocktails. I’ve absolutely loved how it stands up in an El Presidente.

Bei weitem nicht so holzig und verkohlt wie erwartet, sondern präsent und angenehm zu schmecken.
Review by Émile Shevek
Persistent and intense, a typical strong taste, but does not let too many flavors show through
Review by Rum Runner Labs - Will
Sweet and relatively light, with heavy baking spices notes. Vanilla and oak take a back seat, and there’s still a tiny bit of harshness that reminds me of Eclipse.
Review by Markus Fjellstad Israelsen
Tasting 06.06.2026 Nose: woody, vanilla, but also with a slight vegetal/sugarcane and apple note to it. Palate: palate is sort of a continuation of the nose, with wood, vanilla and smoke being the standout notes. Think this will be better as a mixer than s neat sipper
Review by Dave Dahlgren
Deeply charred bourbon rum, toffee karamell lätt len mysig. Lite spritig med tynger efter smak

Read full review →It's a better rum for mel but if you are a huge fan of the old style Black Barrel, you might want to stock up while it's still available. This is a lot different. There is no change in score as I think both rums are very solid 8/10 efforts....
