Velier Caroni Trilogy Guyana Stock Blended Rum 1996

One taster called the blend his personal sweet spot out of the whole Trilogy — "fruity, dirty and pungent." That sums it up: old varnished wood, tar and leather sitting next to overripe tropical fruit and even a bit of cherry. At 66% it's a big, dry Caroni; the palate turns harmonious once you get past a slightly hot, spicy nose, closing on a very long woody finish.

The community says
  • Classic Caroni tar
  • Long woody finish
  • Overripe tropical fruit

A rum I was lucky enough to taste blind. I put my money on a Caroni, Demerara and Jamaica blend. A nose of old varnished wood, discreet esters, yellow fruit and overripe tropical fruit. A little hesitation at the start of the palate, like an imbalance, then everything falls into place, the aromas invade and fill the space right up to the apex. Magnificent! Then it's all downhill to a super-long, woody yet fresh finish. The empty glass is surprisingly lively, with a fresh edge and a touch of old hemp rope.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

Top nose. On the palate, however, the alcohol is not ideally integrated in my opinion.

Got the chance to cross taste the entire Trilogy set of Caroni 1996. One by one, exceptionally good Caronis. The RX1472 stood out as the fruitiest on the nose. Leather and the typical Caroni notes also come to the fore. I therefore found this one the most delicious on the nose. The RX3901 had the woody notes from the barrel predominantly present on the nose. My number 3. With the RX5321, the woody barrel notes also came to the fore. But here, some tropical fruit also comes to the forefront. Slightly sweeter. My number 2 on the nose. On the palate, the RX1472 is truly deliciously fruity, with strawberries remarkably coming to the fore. Of the three, this one had the fruitiest character, which predominated. As a result, the typical Caroni notes were somewhat more in the background and came to the fore in the finish. On the palate, this is my number 1 or 2. It is exactly what I’m in the mood for with a Caroni today. For me, the RX3901 had the most woody and smoky notes combined with the typical Caroni notes on the palate. Slightly heavier and more complex. Something sweet and gluey also came through; the finish is slightly less intense and shorter than the RX1472. On the palate, this is my number 3. The RX 5321 is my favorite on the palate. The true Caroni notes come delightfully to the forefront. Leather, garage, tar, and so on. Really more bite. Probably also due to the alcohol percentage. Alternated with delicious fruity notes in the finish. This is how I like my Caroni best. The alcohol is highest in this one, but perfectly balanced. In terms of taste, this is my shared number 1 or 2 spot. But if I really had to choose, it would be number 1.

Etwas runder und ausgewogener als der 64%er aus der Serie. Immer noch ein sehr kräftiger Männerrum mit dunklen Aromen.

I was expecting a lot from this one given the community's feedback. Unfortunately, I find the nose a bit too spicy and dry to my liking. Palate is however much better balanced. I must say I'm a bit disapointed but it remains a truely great rum.

Caroni

Avg Rating 8.8/10 620 Rums

No closed distillery is chased harder than Caroni. The Trinidad distillery shut down around 2002 and not a drop has been made since, but its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like rum became a collector obsession, carried to the world by Velier. Every bottle now comes from a finite, shrinking stock, which is exactly why the prices keep climbing.
