Velier Diamond <S> 1999
Licorice, dark chocolate and dried prunes lead here, wrapped in leather, tobacco and old-cask oak. This is the charred-barrel outlier among Velier's Diamonds — one taster calls it the "geschmackliche Ausreisser," meaning it strays from the usual Diamond into darker, herbal 70s-Demerara territory. Oily, heavy and deep, with a long spicy finish. A couple of people caught a metallic or medicinal TCP edge.

How does Velier Diamond <S> 1999 taste?
Aggregated from 64 community reviews.
Dark, oily Demerara heavy on licorice and leather Loved by nearly everyone who's tried it — dark, oily and complex with licorice and leather. A couple noted a metallic/medicinal edge, and one felt the palate doesn't fully match the nose.

The flavorful outlier among the Velier diamonds - but by no means in a negative sense. Those who like licorice and leather notes in Demerara will find what they are looking for here. I personally like the profile very much and catapults the bottling consequently also in the top range. No classic Diamond essence, rather 70s Demerara notes with tart, heavy sweetness. An absolutely outstanding release.

A beautiful experiment with aging in charred barrels! The result is a less sweet Diamond but with more notes of herbs, tobacco, and barrel! It still keeps its typical traits and everything is perfectly balanced!
Review by Joachim Guger
This and no other is what a classic Demerara should taste like! The color a madness. An old dresser, freshly embedded, oak and licorice. Bacon! Dark, heavy and oily.I almost took it as an after shave...🤭

Really cool part! The rusty Specknoten reminiscent of a Damoiseau. Real surprise!
Review by Leo Krüper
Awesome Diamond with a great licorice note. Tastes like from a cherry wood barrel. Deep and heavy. Long finish, alcohol perfectly integrated.

Impressive Demerara profile with dark notes of leather, wood, spices but also dark and dried fruits. Insanely delicious! Extremely complex, multi-layered and oily with a long finish.

Incredibly cool device! Dried fig, prune, aged balsamic vinegar, subtle mint and thyme, acacia honey, a little dark chocolate and some rum raisins... Epic! Probably one of the best Guyana rums I've ever tasted to date...

Wow this is a wonderful rum! I don't want to let the fact that this is a unicorn rum make me over rate it but it really is stunning! The smell just leaped out of the glass at me, very intense. On the palate it is just lovely, this is how it all should be! A lovely dark sweetness, licorice, dark chocolate, fruits, leather, lovely oak without being bitter, this is close to perfection for me! Oh and the colour! Beautiful dark mahogany. Long and spicy finish. Well, for my first Velier Demerara I am impressed I hope it keeps up. This is the highest score I have awarded a rum to date, I think it's deserving😊

Heavy, dark with dried fruits. This is a real heavy weight out of the diamonds I had so far. I love this profil.

We had a wonderful pure Diamond tasting yesterday and what a tasting. Another big boom. This one with a great oak finger pointing at you without being too dominant.

A dark demerara as I like them, with licorice, caramel, glue... for only 15 years, the cask has really left its mark on the rum! The nose is pure madness and the whole thing gluggles so easily. The myth of the demerara velier is not stolen: this is a great rum!

Differs very clearly from the other Diamonds. Lots of licorice and molasses, more reminiscent of an old Demerara.

.... Stare Velier Demerara rumy je to nejlepsi, co v rumovem svete muzete ochutnat. Rumy zraly spise omylem nekolik let v tropech a nikdo obsah sudu nedoplnoval. Andelska dan byla 90% a vice, proto je chut obzvlaste plna a intenzivni. I kdyz se jedna o extra drahou zalezitost, doporucu alespon jednou v zivote ochutnat rum z teto serie.

to start the holiday again a real highlight: great nose of dried date (as it comes in the morning in the fruit muesli), furniture polish, tobacco and also somehow a herbaceous-fresh note (chervil?). The palate picks up seamlessly: Raisins, leather, licorice root (which I noted as licorice), cocoa and a slight iodine note. Finishes very spicy with leather, coffee, old barrel. A great Demerara! Many thanks to Vienna for the sample!

Tapas time! Bacon stuffed with plums! What a rum! It needs to rest in the glas but then offers an explosion of flavors. A very complex and wide range from bacon and spices over caramel, touching dried fruits and dark chocolate. On the palate the dried plums become more present supported by a nice and balanced sweetness.

REHABILITATION! The first sample was demonstrably no longer good, so my rating was very poor. I got a new one from a fresh bottle, thanks again for that Jacob❤️ Now everything looks completely different and I actually like the rum very much. Very similar to the SVSG on the nose, although I no longer have any doubt that this marrow was blended with the SVSG. Very crass matured rum, I think it's very nice. Surprisingly harmonious in the mouth, the bitterness is kept within limits. Great thing!

Dark Guyana profile with lots of licorice, dark chocolate and prunes, tobacco, leather wood and burnt finish. Great rum, Column is more about glue, coconut, caramel, raisin but it's still very tasty.

German Rum Festival 2025. A fantastic nose that transports me elsewhere. A woody butter caramel like no other, rich, full-bodied, a flambé dessert. If I analyze it, it also gives notes of dark chocolate, dried fruits, and prunes. The wood is perfectly integrated. The magic of the nose carries over to the palate with a slightly more bitter caramel and a more pronounced, roasted wood. The other aromas are there too: dark chocolate, toffee, licorice, dried fruits, and prunes. The finish is long, balanced, and, like the nose, with a softer caramel. A very, very beautiful nose for this rum that doesn’t quite live up to its promises on the palate.

What a great texture this rum has! Spicy, aromatic, and very dense! The nose is wonderful with licorice, leather, sweet dried plum, dark chocolate, oak, brown caramel, and tobacco. Raisin, dried date, spices, coffee, and dark barrel notes join in with great complexity and blend very harmoniously. On the palate, this fantastic, mouth-filling density first brings a nice sweetness. Licorice, leather, wood, dark chocolate, dried plum, barrel notes, raisin, and caramel quickly appear. Then the aromatic profile is complemented by a spicy side with oak, spices, cappuccino, roast notes, and allspice. Very, very tasty and perfectly balanced! The complex and long finish has dark chocolate, leather, oak, clove, licorice, barrel notes, coffee, and caramel. With cigar, anise, light herbs, and wood notes, the flavor lingers for a long time. Many thanks to @Alex_Kunath for the awesome sample 😃

Read full review →It's just that its very different. Of the three Velier Demerara rums from 2014 I have been lucky enough to try, I think the Uitvluigt 1996 was my favourite, with this and the Diamond/PM 1999 coming in just slightly behind. Another great bottling from the genius of Demerara!

A berry liquorice forward diamond. Very intense very lovely not the best but in the highest league of diamond. The sweetness in particular is very nice. Looses a bit at the finish. I really want more aftertaste. Retaste at Velier live, one point up!
