A great Caroni that combines the best from the 1996 batches in a balanced blend. Typical dirty notes such as tar and rubber meet dark fruit, spice and a deep, mature complexity. Powerful, multi-layered and full of character, a prime example of the Caroni style and definitely one of my favorites.

The profile is one of the more balanced Caroni’s I have tried. It is not a surprise but the overwhelming notes on the palate are tar and rubber oil notes, with a more refined petrol note than some Caroni’s. On the nose there is more fruit and sugar which doesn’t quite materialise on the mouth. Real oily mouth feel and a somewhat medicinal hint. It’s an old school blend and there are no longer many rums of this style in circulation but for me it doesn’t quite reach the upper echelons of rums where many seem to place this rum and Caroni in general

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Top Caroni and an excellent representative of the great 96 vintage. Balanced, complex, Caroni-typical notes with rich tar, rubber and menthol, dark fruits and nice vanilla sweetness from the oak barrel along with a woody finish. Was and still is an ideal entry rum into the high-quality world of tropical-aged Caronis, now also not so easily affordable anymore, but still relatively good value for Caroni. Excellent.

Very nice combination of Caroni notes, fruits, smoke and brunt notes as well as a hint of mint and a certain sweetness. Very well made fully tropical aged Caroni blend - very accessible and enjoyable.

A 1996 Caroni that does not deny its vintage, tar and tropical fruits equally. A marzipan scent gives this rum a pastry-like character. It can still be found in some shops but at exaggerated prices, as if it’s about to take off, which is possible given the quality of the spirit. More restrained than the Navy Rum 100th and the Kill Devil 1998 65.5%, but even more complex and deep in aromas. Delicious! Tasted again and the fruits and sweetness take over the tar. A delight! A clearly underrated rum. The end of the bottle is delicious.

An iconic bottle. Round, warm, powerful nose. Fruity (mango) and spicy. It takes a while to breathe in the glass to bring out the typical Caroni notes. An animal note compensates for the restrained dirty workshop. Spicy, slightly sweet in the mouth. Now a mature Caroni. 🤩🤩🤩 This is followed by a lovely finish, which could easily be longer. Perfectly balanced Caroni magic. Very easy to drink. Hardly any other rum brings out the power of tropical maturation so beguilingly. And then that wonderful smell from the glass in the morning... 😀

Muss ich zu diesem Klassiker wirklich noch was sagen? 😉 Höchstens, dass er so harmonisch und geradezu sanft ist, dass ich ihm "nur" 90 Punkte gebe; mit ein bisschen mehr Dampf und Lokschuppen-Dreck hätte der Rum noch mehr Punkte eingeheimst. Update 2023-12-20: Online-Blind-Tasting 20.12.2023 mit 6 sehr verschiedenen, aber gerade deswegen ganz vorzüglichen Rums, von denen ich im Nachhinein gar keinen besonders hervorheben möchte, jeder hat auf seine Art gut geschmeckt und seinen Charakter in den Flight eingebracht, deswegen auch keine Punktvergabe. Ein tolles Tasting mit Freunden, bei dem jeder von uns ein Blindsample beigesteuert hat. Reihenfolge RX17286 RX726 RX9954 RX3604 RX39 RX12384 RX39 hat man nicht alle Tage als Blindsample im Glas, erlesen!

Still the benchmark Caroni for me. A rum like a poem. Just the right mix of fruit and dirt. The price has risen dramatically, but these bottles are still available. Who knows how much longer.

After a few years, I took another sample and tried it again. I like the nose, less tar and menthol than I remember, more balance with woody but also fruity aromas. In short, the nose is very pleasant. On the palate, however, it remains rather bitter, less pleasurable than on the nose. A little greedy, but the menthol and rubber aromas are also very present, and once again they don't really make me dream. Final verdict: it's good, much more so for my taste than other, much higher-rated caroni (the 94 guyana stock, not to mention it). I'm therefore raising my previous rating, but this will remain a good rum Hors coup de coeur for me. At the release price, it was good value for money.

9:On the nose, the first impression we get are tropical fruits like banana, minty, medicinal notes with solvents and charred wood with caramel, burnt sugar, leather and spice like vanilla, as the molasses is vegetal with flowery notes. On aeration, bourbon yellow fruits, coconut join the game, industrial notes with rubber, more woody nuts, mocha, the mint is now menthol.Very complex, but balanced. 9,3:On the palate, the attack is delicious with currants, red fruits, creamy with vanilla and charred wood notes like caramel, nuts, milk chocolate, leather.Of course, there are tar and rubber, but not pervasive, just pairing. Yellow fruits with juicy peach and sweet honey extremely round up our first impression.They are joined with flowery, minty and citrus notes with an orange, very tasty.After some resting, the wood is even more creamy with smoky, charred wood and notes like toffee, a hint of marzipan, mocha, molasses with licorice, perhaps some umami. 9:The finish is long and tasty, just a bit bitter with tar, rubber, the wood is roasted with nuts, leather, there is still creamy vanilla and the fruits are dried.The molasses brings some tobacco. An authentic, unique and simply sublime rum. The nose, sometimes typical of Caroni with aromas of hydrocarbons, tar and rubber, sometimes concentrated on spices, leather and wood, sometimes sweet on vanilla and caramel, sometimes intense on tropical fruits and red fruits, has a lot to offer. There is that oily, dirty side to the palate that Caroni is known for, especially with hydrocarbons, but also flavors of licorice, oak, tar and glue, smoky and earthy notes and red fruits as well as dried fruits. The finish is very long, slightly roasted and bitter with spice, menthol, tobacco, wood and leather flavors. A greedy, intense, aromatic rum that is part of the history of rum.

My first Caroni! I was told that it was not the most successful but I had a blast even if I did not detect the famous tarry hydrocarbons that are often mentioned. On the other hand, spices, leather like on old Bordeaux, and wood. Next time I'll taste this with Caro experts!

Tolle Nase. Man merkt schön die typisch dreckigen Caroni Noten ergänzt um einen tropischen Fruchtkorb. Dann auch geschmacklich angenehm dreckig. Teer, Gummi, Klebstoff, Öl mit etwas Lakritze und Karamell. Im Abgang dann noch Menthol und Holz. Kein ganz dreckiger Caroni, aber ein ausgewogen, komplex typischer Caroni. Großartig.

Caroni-esque nose. A heavy profile, glued to the ground. Rubber, leather, wood. Ripe fruit, caramel. Impression confirmed on the palate with a rum that changes quite a bit over time. Optimum degree. Endless length. Very cool.

I wouldn't have expected that: it's very reminiscent of a Demerara/Diamond and the dirty components such as smoke/tar/leather that the Caroni Replica RX180 has are also present here, but very weakly pronounced. When I look at the smell association of the community, I start to doubt whether I had the right rum in the sample bottle. In the mouth, it's more like it (earthy, dirty, smoky, caramel sweetness, subtly fruity). The nose and finish are clearly a 9.0 for me, but the mouthfeel doesn't quite carry me away.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

2nd tasting: In the meantime, I have been able to taste a few Caronis. This one is very good overall, although rather smooth compared to other Caronis. 1st tasting umpteen months ago: My first Caroni. Delicious, but I can't (yet) understand the hype surrounding the distillery. Tastes kind of similar to Foursquare to me.

Im Battle um die Krone befanden sich der allseits beliebte Caroni 21, der Last und der Dirty Harry. Nach meinem persönlichen Empfinden und Vorlieben, würde mein Ranking so ausfallen 1. Dirty Harry 2. Last 3. Caroni 21 Alles drei absolute Knaller keine Frage. An einem anderen Tag kann es natürlich auch wieder anders ausschauen. Aber es handelt sich hier wirklich nur um Nuancen.

Darauf habe ich mich gefreut. Mit einer wunderbar vielschichtigen Nase beginnt die Komplexität des Caroni 21. Angenehme Würze und Holz in Kombination mit Gummi, Leder, Tabak und Karamell werden von tropischen Früchten untermalt. Am Gaumen beginnt es mit einer tollen, karamellartigen Süße. Gummi, Leder, und Gewürze wie z.B. vanille und Zimt gehen über in dunkle Beeren, tropische Früchte, Lakritze und eine leichte Erdigkeit. Die ölige Textur und der Körper sind erstklassig. Der lange Abgang punktet mit schönen Fassnoten, welche von Gummi, Leder, Tabak, Frucht und Vanille beflügelt werden. Wieder diese geniale Süße, auf welche dann Röstaromen, Lakritze und Kräuter folgen. Etwas Menthol und Tee sind auch vorhanden. Deutlich vollmundiger als der 17er und auch etwas filigraner mit höherer Aromendichte. Das Beste, was ich seit langem verkosten durfte.

Další z perfektních zástupců caroni. Opět se ukazuje, že velier umí vybírat. Ovocné tóny jsou dokonale doplněny těmi technickými. Ve vůni ledpidlo a třešně, v chuti jsou znát ty roky na sudu, které jsou propsané do chuti. Zapvěr dlouhý a skutečně okouzlující. Nádhera!

Mint caramel sweets meet toothpaste that you want to swallow. Plus a banana to bite into. The rum unfolds beautifully in the mouth and goes down like greased oil. Earth, liquorice and oak. A very pleasant sweetness, especially in the finish.

First nose of wood, candied fruit, a hint of smoke. Evolves into dark chocolate, highly cooked or caramelized exotic fruits, leather and/or rubber. The wood remains quite present overall, over the long term, with a hint of fresh mint? As I bring it to the palate, banana seems to suddenly appear. Mouth: much more powerful than the Replica 18 ans. Still oily, but more direct, warm, a little more complex too. Chocolate and exotic fruit are present, but quickly give way to tar and smoke, which predominate. Wood and leather are still present, as is the slight veil of menthol. Finish: spicy, mentholated, tangy, with the front of the palate almost resembling... washing-up liquid? Or maybe it's a mixture of varnish, tobacco and menthol, almost tending towards aniseed... not easy! But a lot of fun. White fruit peeks out from behind the smoke. Overall, more powerful, more complete, more complex than yesterday's Replica. I'm getting a bit of a kick out of it all the same! Nb: the finish is a little shorter than on the Replica, though!

👃 Toutes sortes d'effluves typiques qui me font adorer Caroni. Vieil atelier de garage où mon grand-père me laissait jouer étant gamin, huile de moteur et fumée de pot d'échappement du tracteur familial, chambre à air, graisses d'engins mécaniques... Avec l'aération, une belles combinaison de fruits tropicaux (banane cuite au beurre, compotée de mangue, goyave bien mûre) et de baies noires. Le fructose du fruit évolue vers du sucre brûlé, arôme caramélisé. Fraîcheur mentholé, quelques notes légères de feuille de tabac, vanille en gousse, carré de chocolat de Papouasie, cirage pour cuir. Complexe, évolutif, équilibré. 😋 Chaleur de pneu brûlé, huile de moteur, goudron, essence... Le garage du village n'est pas loin. Texture Huileuse, plus de bois sale, vanillé, réglissé, légèrement salé. Les fruits tropicaux, secs et noirs sont cuits longtemps dans la marmite. Il évolue vers une forme confite, dans du sucre caramélisé, limite brûlé. Toujours ce voile mentholé qui apporte une forme de fraîcheur dans cette exquise lourdeur. Bombe caroniesque. Toujours ma référence. Le Navy Strength lui va comme un gant. ⛳ Longue finale, chaude, empyreumatique, amère. Feuille de tabac, réglisse fondue, menthe, chêne grillé, fruits secs et déshydratés (abricot, cerise aigre, baies noires). Verre vide le lendemain encore fumant et concentré d'arômes empyreumatiques. 💡 Tout ce que doit être un classique Caroni 1996, équilibré, complexe et empyreumatique typique. Ma référence Caroni à 90pts+.

While this repels some, we find the smell very interesting and nostalgic and exactly what we search in our Caroni. Only to a certain extent of course, which ends when we talk about vintages like 1998 or 2000. Here, it perfectly enhances the overall structure, where we additionally find a fatty note of mangos fried in butter, spiced with some drops of eucalypt oil. On top of it, earthy tones of caramelized pumpkins and dried beetroots set the tone. And every tone bloody fits down to the point. With water: becoming creamier and almost flowery and perfumy now, with camomille, elders and sandalwood essence. Palate 1996 just rules! The fantastic roundness and profound sweetness, combined with the slight Caroni dirtiness are an amazing treat. We also find plenty of bittersweet flavours of chocolate, carob and cappuccino. Imagine a piece of dark chocolate that laid on a gasoline tank for a day (but not inside). Not to forget about the dried oranges and black cherries inside that chocolate brick. Contrary to the name, the body doesn't really feel heavy, more medium-bodied with a silky texture. Finish There are only few spirits that can show off with the length of their finish like tropically matured Caronis. You can taste dried oranges and black cherries for hours.
