Distillerie d'Indochine Sampan Blanc
Most people rate this Vietnamese cane-juice blanc highly, but there's a real split on drinking it neat at 65%. Expect fresh sugarcane, lots of lime and citrus, a green vegetal streak, and a warm peppery, almost saline finish. Several tasters compared it to sake. One called it a "bombe aromatique de pur jus de canne" — but a few found the heat and salty, iodine edge tiring on its own.

Kneipe The Rumah Rotterdam April 2026.

Vegetal nose: fresh cane/citrus/sake Warm attack: peppery/fruity/vegetal Long finish: iodized/spicy I'd like to take this opportunity to compare it to a sample of the Overproof version (54%) that my friend David recently sent me. The markers are obviously very close to those of the 65%. I'll just say that this Overproof version's attack on the palate is less aggressive. In fact, it's surprisingly smooth. There's a watery/diluted feel to the attack on the palate. But the aromas appear right away, with a long, lingering finish. I find this white rather well-balanced, with a preference for the 54% version, which has a more pleasant attack on the palate.

#6502 17.03.2026 Finally home from work and warming up for my tasting of the samples I got from Colours of Rum for evaluation. A very good rum when looking at the price tag. Intense profile with nice sugarcane, floral and fruity notes. The palate is warm, spicy and oily with nice sugarcane. The finish is long and warm with olive and fruits.

Reminiscent of sake, the nose is promising at first. But the taste is extremely perfumed, salty, bitter, iodine/metallic and also a bit meaty and licoricey. Very tiring to drink straight, the 54% is much better... In the daiquiri it is then somewhat more harmonious with notes of white pepper, star fruit, green bell pepper and again salty licorice and mace and iodine. But even in the daiquiri it's not really fun ... What a shame! It's great to have tried, but I would definitely prefer the 54% sampan!

Compared to the 54% version, this Sampan is no slouch. While the nose seems fairly versatile, with spices, fruit (notably citrus and lime), floral and vegetal notes, the palate is much more biting and warm. Despite a slight roundness, the extra degrees are felt on the palate, leaving a strong impression of spiciness on the finish. A powerful rum, slightly less balanced than its 54% predecessor.

Very powerful agricultural white, very lively on a lime-flavored cane. Lacks a little complexity on its own. But can do great in a cocktail with a little salinity on the finish.

The best Samoan! A real success story
