Velier Caroni 39th Release (The Last) Heavy Trinidad Rum 1996
Rubber, tar and old-workshop dirt hit first, then the twist that makes this one famous: mango, plum, burnt sugar and a cool streak of menthol running underneath. At 23 years and nearly 62%, the alcohol sits perfectly integrated — several tasters say they barely feel it. Dirty and sweet and fruity all at once, wrapped in tropical-cask wood. For most here, the finest Caroni they've had.

At the Last Caroni, the typical workshop smells tend to fade into the background. I smell delicious baked goods, spices and vanilla. But also dried fruit and prunes. In the mouth, rubber and tar come to the fore again. There are also roasted notes, olives and light grassy notes. A very long and beautiful finish. A great rum. One of the best Caronis!

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Almost endless bouquet. The classic Caroni notes engage in a great interplay with fruits, wood, and an exquisite sweetness, resulting in fantastic complexity. Not only compared to other bottlings of the remarkable 1996 vintage, an outstanding representative of the Caroni style. Absolute Caroni top.

Incredibly complex and yet easy sipping. A real Caroni highlight!
Review by Mirco
Wow, simply a masterpiece! Definitely one of my absolute favorites by Caroni. Everything that makes up this style comes into its own here perfectly, the dirty notes of tar and rubber complement the intense fruit notes, spicy wood nuances and the depth of the aromas wonderfully. Mega complex and the JG. 1996 simply shows everything that Caroni has to offer. This rum definitely lives up to all the hype.

The Last was my first rum, a crush and the cause of my passion for rums. I reserved its review for my five hundredth review. Bu also with friends who generally rated it very highly, even blind. A complex, warm nose with machine shop (tar and rubber), caramel and fruit. A marked vegetal side, vanilla and pastry. Well-integrated cedar wood and a hint of lime. Wild, aromatic herbs on the palate. The alcohol is marked but domesticated. The aromas invade the palate, first towards the back, then towards the front. A remarkable evolution on the palate. As on the nose, the mechanical workshop supports and never dominates. Incredibly complex aromas. Warm spices and brown sugar. The finish is also hyper-complex, with a vegetal side dominating first, followed by fruit, pastry and cedar wood. A finish that summons all the aromas in turn. At the very end, incense is revealed. A rum that has just been opened, and that will gain even more with oxidation. Already an absolute! I feel like I'm in a tropical circus, in a city orchard, with strong smells, loud music, thrills and lots of different circus acts. Wow!
Review by DomM
Still absolute top notch out of 96 and out of the Velier Caronis overall. Leaning a bit more towards the dirty notes vs. 30th and 34th, yet still incredibly balanced, delivering everything you would expect (and more).
Review by Johannes
What a Caroni ! Round, yet complex, little dirty, just perfect! Benchmark Caroni! Again and again - the Last!
Review by SaibotZtar
My absolute benchmark what (for me) Caroni concerns. There just fits everything ... fruit, spice, wood and some dirty flavors (tar, leather wood polish) all harmoniously merged into a work of art of rum ... I could spend hours with it ... sip for sip a pleasure.

Update: tasted again against the Velier 21 - the reference. It is a good round better (in the nose and on the palate) in terms of balance and the aromas in detail. Really great. Wow, a feeling of enlightenment, like with my first Caroni. Sensational nose, wonderful palate and everlasting finish. Perfect balance of dirt, wood, sweetness and fruit. I am very happy that I was able to try this wonderful rum and hope it wasn't the last time 👌
Review by Maxence
A true masterpiece. Alcohol integration is perfect. Typical 1996 profile with sweetness balancing Caroni notes and cofee, dark chocolate adding more complexity. Very expressive rum, incredible profile, what else ? As we say, "Last" but not least 💘
Review by Tschusikowsky
Entdecken und geniessen. Extrem vielseitig und was ganz Tolles.

Small Caroni blind tasting with 4 great Caronis. The Last could also be tasted blind. It was a little rounder and more complex than the other 3 Caronis tasted. Nevertheless, it is not overwhelming. A rum for every day if it didn't have its price. :) Update: Tasted again at leisure. Almost a little subtle on the nose. But then the rum explodes in the mouth. The 23 years of maturation give it a good wood influence, but not at all unpleasant. Fruit and dirty components are also present. The finish is long and warm. It feels like you can still taste the rum hours later. A real highlight.
Review by Pavel Spacek
... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Absoluter Ausnahme caroni! Wahnsinnig lecker!
Review by Christoph H.
In a word: COMPLETENot only as Caroni, but also as rum in general. Rarely you have something so round and complex in the nose, insane! Fruits of all kinds, furniture polish, rubber, vanilla herbs, milk chocolate and an incredible honey sweetness. The cask is present, but not even close to over the top for 23 years. The rum takes over the mouth incredibly quickly with a sensational and creamy honey sweetness and is no less complex here. "No bitterness" sends its regards. Not for nothing a legend and a highly deserved appreciated rum
Review by Jeremy Roger 🇫🇷
Nose: Caroni, just the way we like it. Deeper/riper notes, it's gourmand, it's really appealing! In the mouth: Oh boy! Intense and delicious! A well-mastered power, refreshed by a mentholated side - it's excellent. Rubber still present when you wake up. Really delicious ❤
Review by Gunnar Böhme "Bauerngaumen" 🤓
No, nothing really needs to be written about this rum. Even if I had not known beforehand what I have in the glass, I would have given this rum my highest rating so far. Absolutely let breathe before drinking! But then everything just fits. What a stroke of genius of a blend! The completely tropical maturation can be tasted from every pore. ROUND, HEAVY, COMPLEX. THE LAST.
Review by Timo Groeger
Wow, probably the best rum I've ever had. The Last is simply a dream Definitely a beautiful nose of rubber, wood and leather. On the palate, mainly burnt sugar, but also wood and leather. Delicious.
Review by RumTaTa
Well then, let's see what it can do... Nose starts with heavy sweetness, and dark cooked fruits. Plus a pinch of tar and old abandoned workshop. The alcohol is practically not noticeable. On the palate, the alcohol shows very well and helps the flavors: now dominated roasted and barrel notes and of course the Caroni workshop with tar, rubber and a little smoke. In the aftertaste, the flavors remain very nice and are framed by a pleasant bitterness. OK, the rum is really good but somehow I do myself hard to rate him better than a good Skeldon or one of the great the Velier Long Pond.
Review by Joachim Guger
I had this rum in my glass a few years ago in the pre-rumX days, when I clearly liked the 17 Extra Strong and the Bristol 97-15 better. So, what does my expertise look like today? 😎😎😎 Wow!!! A lot dirtier than the 21 Extra Strong. Wonderfully beautiful Caroni notes. Tropical fruits (mango), spicy, floral. Very noticeable freshness (menthol, solvent, varnish). Very warm, powerful and very complex. It continues in a similar way in the mouth, very woody and spicy. Great finish. Spicy, warming like a sunset in Trinidad. I have to revise my opinion of the rum. Awesome stuff!!! 🤩🤩🤩 The freshness and the really nice workshop smells are memorable. The right music to go with it: "Trinidad Carnival" by Lionel Belasco. 🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹
Review by Thunderbird
This is exactly how a Caroni must be for me! He has all facets with a little more on the spicy and dirty side, but also fruit notes are recognizable! Super pleasant to drink and enjoy! The alcohol is perfectly integrated! Very tasty 🤤
Review by TheRhumhoe
Last but definitely not least, this is one hell of a modern-day unicorn. The nose is absolutely radiant, with remarkable complexity and depth. The petroleum aromas are perfectly integrated into the profile, which blends wood, polish, glue, leather, spices (chilli, vanilla, pepper) and smoky notes with maestro skill. However, the sweetness of caramel and burnt sugar, menthol and tropical fruits (citrus, mango, banana) open the nose to a new, ultra-rich and complete olfactory galaxy. The whole is perfectly blended, harmonious, dirty but incomparably elegant, gaining in fullness with time. On the palate, the tone is divine. The texture is extremely pleasant, a little fatty, oily like a machine shop, full-bodied and really gripping. Empyreumatic flavors (tar, rubber, smoke) perfume the palate, contrasted by the sweetness of caramel, toffee, chocolate and burnt sugar. The opulence of tropical fruits (banana, mango) and the freshness of almost dirty menthol are grafted onto the blend of spices, leather and coffee for a striking aromatic spectacle of breathtaking balance and presence. The rum becomes one with the palate. Endlessly round, the alcohol is perfectly integrated, there's nothing to complain about. The finish touches the stars, as if in a dream that lasts an eternity. All the aromas are there, following one another, passing the buck and evolving towards a structured, perfumed, elegant and absolutely epic final bouquet. At times warm and spicy with dark, smoky highlights, at times exotic with menthol and fruit, at times harsh with dark chocolate or bitter orange, or sweeter with caramel and milk chocolate, this is an apotheosis of a finish. Simply put, this is one of the greatest Rhumesque poems of all time, a timeless classic.
Review by TheJackDrop
Caroni The Last 1996 Nose: powerful, very powerful. A (perfect?) mix of menthol, ripe exotic fruit, tea, wood and glue. Almost difficult to describe as all harmonious and well blended. I thought it would remain stable, but... In fact, it's evolving towards vanilla, a sort of spice pudding, cinnamon, cloves? Bcp more "gourmand" in the 2nd nose. Palate: fruity, spicy, gourmand but powerful. Roasted fruit such as yellow peach? On a background of smoke and vanilla. Wow. Less "rubbery" than its predecessors, more gourmand, but even more intense. More fruity and oily. Finish: tea, wood, tropical fruit, smoke! The finish is a little less persistent than the 21-year-old, but also rounder and more pleasant in the long run. Still, there's a salty, fatty side that hangs on well, salted butter caramel? In short, it's high-flying, complex but also very gourmand. It's this gourmet side that really sets it apart from the last 2 tested.

Beautiful, intense, heavy Trinidad rum with deep woody notes, dark fruit and spicy depth. Full-bodied, complex and with a long finish - a worthy farewell to this legendary distillery.....!

the full score is only denied him because Luca Gargano might yet pull a closely guarded barrel out of the hat 😉

In the battle for the crown were the ever-popular Caroni 21, the Last and the Dirty Harry. According to my personal feelings and preferences, my ranking would be as follows 1. the Dirty Harry 2. the Last 3. the Caroni 21 All three absolute bangers, no question. On another day, of course, things may look different. But we're really only talking about nuances here.
Review by Jarek
I haven't tasted many Caronis yet, but The Last is the best so far and an essence of the notes I expect from a Caroni. Rubber, tar and wood are there, but also enough fruit and sweetness. Just as much of everything as it should be. Heavenly! Thanks to Serge for the sample 😋

About this rum need not say much: a bomb in the glass and somehow also a legend.
Review by Mopar Rules
second tasting, considering a 9.1 over my first 9.0. Like the Paradise #4/5 very balanced but less impressive as expected. Not as deep and intense or complex or just slam in your face as the peer group Demeraras; mystery, hype, closed destillery, high prices, who could give an average valuation? Of course, a complex, amazing rum. An excellent rum. Very looong finish. Might not open my bottle, it seems to be more an investment

Habe den anderen Kommentaren nichts hinzuzufügen. Eine Wucht! 06.04.2025: Direktvergleich zwischen RX203 (John „D“ Eversley), RX1403 („Fire“ Old Whisky) und RX38 (Last Caroni).

Wow, bombastic nose, even though I absolutely cannot relate to this rum smelling like rubber or tar. I get a very round nose, reminiscent of Guyana, Barbados or Belize. Lots of chocolate, caramel, burnt sugar, cream toffee, vanilla, dried fruit, citrus, roasted flavors and menthol. In the mouth a bit more on the spicy and woody side, with super tasty cream toffee/milk chocolate paired with roasted flavors. In the finish, a black tea note is added in a surprising way. The similarity to Guyana is then but very large. Whether this is the best rum that I had so far in the glass, must be shown with a direct comparison with the ED Skeldon.
Review by DaveLamb
the best caroni I've ever tasted, although it's not amazing. full body, drinkable palate, and very long finish. complex and balanced than any Guyana Stock, also good than those. half side is dry, meanwhile half side is juicy

Wow what a Caroni. Really nice intense dark appearance with a dirty peaty taste. Definitely one of the best rums I've enjoyed so far. The alcohol is also very well integrated here.

A Caroni that I really wanted to try. My expectations were not disappointed. Absolutely brilliant. The typical dirty profile doesn't quite come through here, which is perfectly fine.
Review by Banana Joe
Hier findet man wirklich alles, wofür Caroni steht. Macht einfach nur Spaß 😜
Review by Skyfly
The "last" rum of the year and a dream of a rum. Beautifully dirty with rubber, tar and varnish, but at the same time fruity with burnt sugar. All of this is evident from the first whiff right through to the finish.
Review by Tobin
Absolute classic, mega experience. Smoky, dry, roasty/burnt, some tar and rubber - everything you would expect. Some mango and tangerine on the nose - which was not expected... :-D
Review by Felix Reiber
For me, this is an ether of flavor and character. One of the best Caroni noses I have ever smelled. Powerful and multi-layered. The caramel, spicy, menthol and woody components do not overlap, which makes this rum so harmonious. After a longer standing time, cola and cherry become noticeable on the nose. On the palate, it is again very powerful and full-bodied. You have the feeling of finding something new after every sip (sipping) and the complexity requires a lot of concentration. Christmas spices, herbs, tobacco and caramel as well as leather, cola and tannins are just a few of them. The finish is long, complex and just as stunning as the nose and palate. I am very impressed by this creation and can recommend it to everyone. Thank you for the outstanding sample 😃
Review by Alexander Rasch
What a privilege to grab a sample in 2022 without giving up a hot meal. Thanks for that. The nose is the best I've ever had the pleasure of sniffing. So intense and warm. So dirty and caroni with everything I love. On the palate, the barrel is very present. Intense, concentrated rum comes with earthy, dirty Caroni notes. The barrel is almost a bit too present with. I as an old Bristol Caroni drinker must say that I like here the 1997 Bristol a little better because here the ashtray to the end fully reinknallt and the Velier The Last is very linear. But an absolute dream rum. Simply fantastic. The cherry on top of the cream. I bow down.
Review by Bernardo
Personally, the best Caroni I have drunk. Spicy, dirty and long finish. The 62% you do not notice. Simply great.

Great Caroni with all the flavors you would expect from a Caroni. The dirty flavors are very pleasantly present, but do not displace the fruity flavors. A nice sweetness accompanies the whole thing. Probably the best Caroni we've had in the glass.
Expert review by Rob Bauer
Nose While Long Pond 2007 TECC was a disturbing Bacon painting, this Caroni is a tropical Monet! Full of elegance, complexity, herbs and an astonishing richness. We can honestly say that we've never had such a herbal nose. A bunch of gentians, laurels, thyme, Maggi, roasted vanilla pods, oregano and fresh cut eucalyptus (we love this!). Under the surface there is a deep molasses note, noble woods and leather, a lot of milk chocolate, liquorice, noble mold and wet mud and leaves in the forest. Pure sophistication! All traversed by this vibrant menthol-y freshness. We are in love. With water: my gosh, the herbs and chocolate level just went to the next level! This could be the most elegant interpretation of Jägermeister on this planet. Palate The thickest herbal oil. Smooth and mellow like an alpaca coat. There is no sharpness or edge at all. Incredible when you consider the abv. We get all the herbs, the chocolate and the mud we had on the nose. It's a shame, but we must stick to the protocol (who defined this?). With water: Smoother, oilier, sweeter, almost like liquid eucalyptus pralines (it's toxic we know). Not as complex as the bouquet, but still fabulous. ғɪɴɪsʜ Endless like a Pink Floyd record with a very pleasant cocoa + cola (mind the difference) bitterness and a small piece of a new tyre. You still taste it the morning after. Crazy stuff.

I'm Oliver, and RumX began in 2018 as a small passion project in Stuttgart, back then under the name Rum Tasting Notes.
What began as my digital tasting diary is now the world's most comprehensive platform for rum fans, today carried by a small team with Jakob, Lukas and Katharina, with Robert supporting us as a freelancer. We combine the collective intelligence of our community with an integrated marketplace, so you can choose with confidence, without paperwork, detours, or expert jargon.
