Whisky & Rhum Don José L'Esprit 2004

Give it ten minutes in the glass before you go in — at 61.4% the alcohol needs air to settle. What surprises people is the smoke: an unusual roasted, whisky-like note sitting over vanilla, caramel and plenty of oak. The palate lands sweeter than the proof suggests, creamy with toffee and ripe fruit. A smoky, sweet Panama that most agree needs a bit of patience.

Smoky, sweet cask-strength Panama that wants air Well-liked as an unusually smoky Panama, with the sweetness a recurring plus. The common gripe: the alcohol could be better integrated, and it stays cask-driven.

Beautiful representative of the Spanish style. A very pleasant sweetness paired with power and intensity. I like it very much, only the alcohol could be a little better integrated.

Surprisingly complex - not an aroma monster, but with a great integrated smoky note as a counterpart to the sweet spicy and woody notes. A very successful representative of Panama rums.

Clearly too sweet Panama rum with notes of vanilla, caramel and honey on the nose, accompanied by some wood and spice. Soft and sweet on the palate with toffee, ripe fruit and a creamy texture, the alcohol is noticeable but not disturbing. The finish is medium long, warm and slightly sticky. Overall, a solid but very sweet rum with little depth and barrel dominance.

Quite strong on the nose, definitely needs space to breathe. The smoky whisky note here is very unusual but goes quite well with the dark, roasty rest. After 10 minutes, the alcohol has calmed down. The palate is then much sweeter than expected, but of course with plenty of power in the alcohol. Cocoa, vanilla, lots of wood and, above all, strong alcohol - which could be more discreet or better integrated. Nevertheless exciting and very tasty, especially after a little air.
