Velier Diamond SVW 1999
Sipped neat is the only way most people meet this tropically-aged Diamond, and at 64.7% it demands attention. Expect glue and polish up front, then deep coconut, dark chocolate, dried fruit and creme brulee, with a long roasted-oak finish. Several tasters mention a light herbal-licorice turn near the end, and the alcohol runs a touch dominant.
The community says- Deep coconut
- Chocolate and glue
- Very long finish

How does Velier Diamond SVW 1999 taste?
Aggregated from 68 community reviews.
Deep coconut-and-chocolate cask-strength Demerara Loved by Demerara fans for its coconut, chocolate and glue depth. Most rank it just below Velier's 1996 SVW, and a few call it slightly rough with heat that can run hot.

Top rum, but it does not come close to the level of Velier's 1996 SVW. The aroma profile is almost identical, but is somewhat stronger in the spicy notes and at the same time has less expression in the vanilla notes that were so famous in the 1996 SVW. For me, therefore, just below the magic 9.0-point mark, but of course still an exquisite release.
Review by Serge
Not quite at the level of the Velier 1996 SVW full proof and not quite as fine in the creaminess and the gourmand and vanilla notes. But with very nice stickiness with coconut, raisin and chocolate as well as nice wood. Not at all dissimilar to the CBH or DMD from the ED rare collection. Of course too expensive nowadays, but very tasty. Nevertheless, I would rather take 3 bottles of CBH for the same money.

Incredibly cool and atypical Guyana diamond. Glue, dark chocolate, roasted nuts and a good load of cinnamon! Really cool😍♥️ really great vintage Demerara, alcohol is just a little dominant overall.

... The Old Velier Demerara rum is the best thing you can taste in the rum world. The rums were aged in the tropics for several years by mistake and nobody refilled the barrel. The Andel tax was 90% or more, which is why the taste is especially full and intense. Even though it is an extra expensive product, I recommend to taste a rum from this series at least once in your life.

But what a gem, a diamond in the rough! The nose is incredibly deep and rich, both dark and savory, with notes of milk chocolate, coffee, burnt sugar, buttery caramel, dried fruit (raisin, apricot) and coconut. Leather, tobacco, roasted wood, sweet spices (vanilla, pepper), salty notes and glue form a complex, intense and delicious blend. An olfactory marvel. The palate is a love letter to rum: a dark, delicate, complex delight of great aromatic intensity on gourmet cappuccino, chocolate, cocoa, caramel with crème brûlée and a hint of well-cooked molasses. The poetry continues with spicy notes, a pinch of salt, roasted wood, tobacco, a little glue and always dried fruit and coconut in the background. The alcohol is present as it should be, enhancing the profile, here of almost infinite sweetness. The finish is an eternal extension of this Rhumesque passion, as complex, dark and exquisite as ever. Caramel, coffee, chocolate and coconut provide the sweetness, while wood, roasted notes and spices bring a darker, more bitter facet. No false notes here. A superb rum, admittedly a victim of its own success, but one that belongs in Demerara's supreme league.

#5470 12.07.2025 Relaxing after a short trip to Flensburg to pick up packages and fuelling the car and spare canisters. Later I have a small tasting with friends 😊 Nose Wood/oak, light caramel, molasses, light iodine, light herbal, plum, faint smoke, light coffee. Palate Wood/oak, roasted, light iodine, light bitter, light coffee, clove, light vanilla, light orange, light herbal, light medicinal. Finish Medium to long, light bitter, wood/oak, roasted, cinnamon. Empty glass Prunes, light pencil shavings, cinnamon, light coffee, faint smoke.

Has similarities to the Diamond 1996 SVW. But a tad rougher.
Review by Jarek
Glue, coconut, dried fruit, roasted notes on the nose. Pleasant caramel sweetness on the palate, dark chocolate, coffee notes. The finish delivers what the nose and palate promise. However, the El Dorado Rare Cask bottlings play in the same league at a significantly lower price.

Had I almost put after Barbados ... tasty Easy sipper, with delicious fruit, but also little complex. More maturity might have brought even more depth, and the profile is also not completely mine Overall a very good rum, but falls short of expectations. For me!

Tropically matured, Diamond goes in a slightly different direction than what I'm usually used to from Demerara. Here, glue and polish tend to dominate at the outset in a delightful interplay with marzipan, orange peel, dried fruit, clove, spice. Unfortunately, like the '98 CBH, this one swings into more herbal licorice notes, which after various exchanges seems to be something only I notice. You can define it however you like, at any rate, this unfortunately bothers me a bit. Overall, however, this is a very good rum here

very looong finish. Complex, on nose and palate with an amazing variety of flavors. Not as good as the -s- but still top of the notch. Demerara Rules

Toller Velier Demerara. Intensive Nase mit Klebstoff und Frucht sowie eine schöne Süße sowohl an der Nase als auch am Gaumen. Herrlich langer Abgang und recht gut integrierter Alkohol. Schönes Teil, macht Spaß.

A fine selection. In the greedy, a little dark. The fruit is there, but still rather subdued. In direct comparison with DDL's Enmore 1996, it's a hair below.

Great depth and a dramatic step up for me from it’s brother the . Great depth with wood, caramel, custard and strong deep coconut. Draws the drinker in and really complex. Layers and layers of complexity, some Skeldon type elements. Great depth and pose. Really a great diamond rum.
Review by Carlitooo
Slightly more elegant than the 1996, not as brute, subtly fruity, alcohol is optimally integrated
Review by Martin Švojgr
Absolutely great experience. Aromas of full and complex old wood, tobacco, vanilla and oak. The palate adds milk chocolate and velvety creme brulee on the finish is beautifully smooth and long with undertones of oak and tobacco. A beautiful throwback to history.

On the nose I smell coconut, vanilla, dried plums, musty old leather and wood, dark chocolate and coffee bitterness, bit technical and alcoholic, light orange. On the palate I taste warm, dark and bitter notes of coffee and dark chocalate, roasted wood, spices, herbals and light coconut. I have a very limited knowledge of these old Velier bottlings so I can't really compare, but wow. This is very complex and layered rum scoring easily well over 9 for me. Big thank you to Filip Šikula for sharing this. Compared together: RX368 Diamond 1999 RX753 Enmore 1995 RX516 Uit 1997
