Silver Seal Uitvlugt Demerara 1989
Near-universal love here, with one honest asterisk. This 1989 Uitvlugt is a deep, dark Demerara: old oak, leather, licorice, dried plum and espresso, with almost no sweetness — it dries out as it goes. Most call it complex and beautifully layered, though a couple find it too woody and bitter, and one notes the ABV isn't fully tucked away. Give it time to open.

This rum is a top notch when it comes to flavours as well as complexity and balance. Perfect ABV integration and lightly dry with nice fruits and roasted wood. The spices only enhances the overall profile. I really like the coffee on the finish and the empty glass is wonderful even after several hours.

Tasted at the same time as the Silver Seal Demerara 1974 and compared unfavorably. Fresher but far less complex. A nose of old leather, bitter orange and creosote. An astonishing palate with fresh almond, smoke and caramel. Very long finish. Much less powerful and complex than the 1974 Demerara. Also weak compared to the Velier SVW 96, but hard to shine against this monster. Thanks Thomas for the sample.

Wow is the old, wow is the beautiful!Nose: complex and intense. Pleasantly woody with nice dark fruit and a subtle spiciness. Woody acidity with maple syrup and some Maggi. Moist pipe tobacco to go with it. Cherry and grape and some orange with dried apricot. A slightly vinous undertone. Palate: elegant and full-bodied. Super round wood for its age. Malty toast, sweet and sour treacle, light nutty bitter notes from pecans. Wood acidity and newsprint segue into dried apricot, tr. date. Rear light anise and black tea.Great flavor curve on the palate.

This Uitvlugt inspires me! I find it quite complex, with a constant alternation between heavy sweetish fruit and old barrel with burnt espresso on top! Delightful!

Wow, wahrscheinlich der beste Uitvlugt, den ich bislang hatte. Ein Traum von einem Rum, man erkennt die Modrigkeit, aber nicht zu krass, ansonsten kommen noch etwas Lakritze, Leder, Schwarztee und Eiche durch.

Many continental Port Mourant of all bottlers, have already found their way into my glass. In my eyes, however, most of it is hardly worth mentioning and just okay. But what was produced here in '89, you simply can not compare. Here, continental aging can definitely keep up with various tropical Demeraras. Especially the SS surprised me very positively. A very intense and complex nose with lots of peach and solvent. Absolutely smooth to drink. I like it very much!

Dies ist ein sehr leckerer und überaus Komplexer, alter Demerara. Die Nase ist wunderbar vielschichtig und harmonisch. Ich habe Leder, Holz, Pfirsich, Orangenschale, Kirsche, Fassnoten und getrocknete Aprikosen. Gewürze, Eiche, Birne und Klebstoff erweitern die Komplexität und machen die Nase sehr aufregend. Am Gaumen ist er sehr aromatisch, aber durch den gut integrierten Alkohol doch filigran und leicht zu trinken. Fass, Leder, Eiche, Lakritze, schöne Röstnoten, Dörrpflaume und Orangenschale leiten über zu Trockenfrüchten, Mokka, Anis, dunkles Toffee und Schwarztee. Eine leicht bittere Holzigkeit ist spürbar. Der lange und vielschichtige Abgang bietet Leder, Anis, geröstete Eiche, Gewürze, stark getoastete Brotrinde, Rosinen, Dörrpflaume, Orangenschale, Espresso und Schwarztee. Dieser alte Silverseal ist ein wahrer Genuss und jedem zu empfehlen, der gerne Demeraras genießt. Vielen Dank an @DanielS für dieses schmackhafte Sample 😀

Ein herrlich schwerer Demerara mit sehr intensiven dunklen Aromen wie Mokka, viel Leder, Dörrpflaume, getoastetem Holz und diversen Gewürzen. Süße sucht man quasi vergeblich und im Gaumen immer trockener werdend ist dies ein wirklich faszinierender Tropfen!

Habe schon einige ältere probiert und mir noch mehr versprochen. Das holzige ist immer im Vordergrund und weicht dann einer angenehmen Bitterkeit. Ein paar Trockenfrüchte dazwischen. Sehr angenehmer langer Abgang.

Beeindruckender Demerara. Alte Eiche, dunkle Trockenfrüchte, leicht malzig. Sehr schön verschmolzen und schön cremiges Mundgefühl. Der Abgang ist für den relativ geringen Alkoholgehalt extrem lang. Sehr lecker :)

Ein Wahnsinn. Demerara, wie man ihn sich vorstellt. Die Nase ist voller Holzaromen und dunkler Schokolade, gepaart mit Obst wie Aprikose, Orange, dazu Schwarztee und leicht bittere Noten vom gebranntem Zucker, im leeren Glas kommt die Lakritze richtig gut raus. Am Gaumen verspürt man tatsächlich erstmal eine gewisse Cremigkeit fand ich. Dann kommen süße Anklänge von Demerara Zucker, Fass und getrockneten Früchten. Er springt dabei immer wieder hin und her, je nachdem wo auf der Zunge man ihn gerade rollen lässt. Bittere Eindrücke, dazu fruchtige Wahrnehmungen und ein wahnsinnig voller Körper hinterlassen einen tollen Gesamteindruck. Spannende Abfüllung, genau mein Ding!

Das ist doch mal was. Schon für das Auge ein Fest. Klasse Aufmachung und als Farbe des Rums ein helles, klares, strahlendes Rotmuskat. In der Nase nach dem Einschenken Noten von Terpentin und Farbeimer. Hört sich jetzt erstmal nicht gerade lecker an, ist aber in der Kombi mit der aufkommenden Würze und den Holznoten ein Gemisch mit Suchtpotential. Darüber schwebt ein leicht süsslicher Schleier und rundet das Ganze ab. Am Gaumen eine Mischung aus Leder, Unterholz, Gewürzen und Fassnoten die mit den Lösemitteln aus dem Naseneindruck ergänzt wird. Auch gebrannter Zucker mit einem Hauch Röstigkeit. Der Abgang ist lang auf den würzigen und holzigen Aromen. Dieser Rum ist super-komplex, wunderbar verwoben und ruft danach sich mit ihm zu beschäftigen.

extrem long finish with the bitterness and adstringent expression of a long maturation. On the palate bitter, rich and quite woody. This rum needs to breath for quite some time to release its full aroma range of dried plums, orange and burned caramel. ABV is very present and is not perfectly integrated. On the nose it’s the typical richness and depth of these old and long matured demeraras. The nose is a 9.3, on the palate it’s a bit challenging and the rum needs some time to open up. Not perfectly balanced but still amazing in its richness, 9.0. Overall a 9.1

Interesting nose, orange peel, plum, oak, plum, leather. I expexted more complex palate, still very attractive taste, however not so complex as other old Silver Seal PM bottlings. Plum, anise, orange peel, coffee, bit roasted and bitter, all well balanced but still for top grades it lack depths and more complexity. Perhaps continental aging? Still top league rum, definitely 90+ points. Long to medium finish. I like this type of Uitvlugt which you hardly find to be destilled these days.
