Epris S.B.S Brazil 2011

Forget the tropical Brazil cliché — this is nuts, wood and char in the glass. Roasted walnut leads, one member nails it as fresh chestnuts from the roaster, with old wood, leather and cocoa behind it. There's a faint peaty edge and tropical fruit hiding underneath, but the nutty spine runs the whole way. At 56.6% the alcohol sits well integrated, finishing dry and increasingly charred.

S.B.S Brazil 2011is a single barrel bottling with only 264 bottles. The rum is based on molasses and fresh sugar cane, and was produced in 2011 at the Epris distillery. S.B.S Brazil 2011 was bottled by hand at a cask strength of 56.6% vol. This rum is the first pure S.B.S bottling from Brazil. Tasting NotesSmell: Pleasant aromas of chocolate and nuts and a touch of cinnamon.Taste: Initially quite heavy notes of leather and tobacco that evolve into a fruity finish reminiscent of fermented apples and quince.

Flavor profile doesn't pick me up at all. Relatively one-dimensional with a strange, nutty note. Alcohol is well integrated.

The nose isn't very expressive at first, so you have to go out and discover it. But once in the nostrils, it takes you on a journey with a lovely palette of sweet, fresh aromas. There's lovely tropical fruit (melon, mango and passion fruit), fresh mint, cinnamon and, above all, a pretty rose candy. I find this nose very interesting and surprising. On the palate, we move away from this delicate nose to heavy notes of leather and tobacco. It's rather dry and pungent, with a hint of burnt wood. The finish is moderately long and warm.

I don't know what to make of this, yet, so I will wait for more details until the second tasting of this 5cl. Not bad, though... However, as my first Brazilian Rum I need to give it more thought. 2nd Tasting: I had a look to see if my blind impression was right: I assumed this to be a Molasses Rum that attempts to be AN Agricole, but is is in fact both. Nice! It makes a sweet, expressive and somewhat wild experience.

This rum is probably my first Brazilian. There's no Copacabana with tropical fruit in the glass here. It's nutty, woody and charcoal. Very pleasant on the palate, a little musty on the attack with old wood and nuts and increasingly charred on the finish. If it wasn't so expensive, I'd get myself a bottle. Thanks for the sample @Jarek

Alkohol wirklich gut eingebunden.

Where it is still restrained on the nose, with strong notes of wood and Mediterranean fruit, it pleases very well on the palate: velvety and oily and beautifully red fruit with a dash of exoticism.

A stark flavor profile that you have to like, very nutty, associations with aged cachaca. As if you would get freshly roasted chestnuts from the Italian, only from Brazil.

Aged rum

Avg Rating 8.0/10 over 16,000 Rums

Aged rum is where the spirit earns its complexity. In a tropical warehouse a barrel loses 6 to 10 percent of its contents to evaporation every year, which is why an 8-year Caribbean rum can taste deeper than a 20-year Scotch. This page gathers every rum on RumX that has spent real time in wood, with community ratings to separate the genuinely mature from the merely dark.
