Berry Bros & Rudd Caroni Trinidad Rum (Haromex Selection) 1997
Despite the near-60% strength, the alcohol reads soft and well-integrated here — most tasters were surprised how easy it drinks. Classic Caroni tar, petrol and rubber sit next to roasted wood, dark chocolate and caramel, with a few grilled-banana and dark-berry notes underneath. The catch: several found it lacks power, a "relatively weak" 1997 that stays out of the top tier.

How does Berry Bros & Rudd Caroni Trinidad Rum (Haromex Selection) 1997 taste?
Aggregated from 20 community reviews.
Dirty, tarry Caroni that drinks softer than 59% A well-liked continental 1997 Caroni with all the dirty tar-and-petrol signatures, but several felt it lacks punch and could use a higher ABV. Still a fun, drinkable pour.

Funky! Gut trinkbarer Caroni, gefällt mir sehr gut. Es mangelt jedoch etwas an der Power.

A relatively weak 97 Caroni . The nose is clearly the best thing about this bottling. Concise gas station and tar aromas with some dark berries. On the palate, roasted and peppery aromas predominate alongside the dirty aromas. The finish is relatively short

Wow, he can really do something! Nice and dirty, nice and strong. I don't normally do this, but here I tried it with a few drops of water, and I have to say, they get a bit more out of the rum, delicious. A successful bottling that is still under the radar and was still available until recently. Thanks to BananaJoe for the sample from what appears to be the last bottle from the first market. 👍

#6655 14.04.2026 Enjoying a few samples to see if it can clean up my sore throat and kill my fever. This is a pretty good bottling especially when looking at the price tag. All the mostly known Caroni flavours are in the profile and the balance is pretty good. Would have loved a higher ABV though.

8,7:On the nose, the first impression we get are roasted wood notes with nuts, dark chocolate, caramel, spicy with nutmeg and minty molasses, slightly musty, variety of dirty industrial tones like petrol, rubber, tar, solvents. On aeration, spicy cardamom and cinnamon arise, citrus and berries, herbaceous molasses. 8,4:On the palate, the attack is dirty and crisp, slightly mineral with rubber, plastic, roasted and spicy wood notes like vanilla, allspice, nuts, chocolate and caramel, malt.On oxidation, it becomes fruitier with berries and citrus, bitter, the molasses is herbaceous, joined with some menthol. 8,5:The finish is dry and tannic, dirty with industrial notes like petrol, rubber, nail polish, crisp with confectionery, the wood is roasted and spicy, as on the palate, we only have lemon from fruits, variety of molasses notes like black tea, grass and olive...

The Caroni evening starts directly with an unexpected fireworks display. Wow! Great continental 97 Caroni. Really superior quality at a great price at the time. Alcohol perfectly integrated.

1997 crosstasting of continental aged releases: Nice BBR release, clear HTR aromas, pleasant body and good complexity. Nice release.

Super tasty and dangerously drinkable. Alcohol super integrated.

It was allowed to breathe for 40 minutes. In the meantime, I kept smelling it. On the nose, notes of candis, grilled bananas, acacia honey, tropical fruit cocktail with a hint of dirty earth. On the palate you think it's around 50%, incredibly soft and oily, reminiscent of roasted almonds, Turkish honey, coconut spice cake, matured tobacco and 70% dark chocolate. Very long finish. This thing is fun!
