Velier Caroni Heavy Trinidad Rum (TWE) HTR 2000
One taster called it "a very deep and dirty Caroni," and that's the shape of it: oak, rubber, tar and orange peel, with a woody, spicy edge and a long warm finish. A few note it leans more woody than funky and could use a touch more complexity, but the classic tar-and-citrus Caroni signature is all here at a serious 70.4%.

05.01.2019 A very nice tasting event where I met new local rum nerds. Notes. Medium dark colour. Nose: wood, roasted, orange, earthy, light rubber and tar, caramel. Palate: oily, wood, roasted, cherry, tar, rubber, chocolate, light mint. Finish: very long, warm, wood, roasted, orange, light rubber and tar, citrus.

A very deep and dirty Caroni... lots of oak, rubber, tar and citrus going on here. The mulchy fruits are there but this is a very dirty, woody and spicy Caroni. Interesting and I love it!

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

A great Caroni 2000 single cask which is however lacking a bit of complexity and funkyness, especially on the palate, to reach the top spot among the best releases from this vintage like EATALY, Whisky Antique or Nectar.
