Silver Seal Demerara Rum Wildlife Series No. 1 1971
At 71.8% you'd brace for a blowtorch, but the heat is buried under one of the darkest, oiliest Demeraras people have met. Tasters reach for old tawny port, prunes, dark chocolate, walnuts, tobacco and leather, all coated in a thick oily texture and a smoky, faintly bitter tail. A drop of water and some rest, and it opens up endlessly. Rare and very special.

Dark, oily old Demerara, port and chocolate Adored by almost everyone who tried it — deep port, chocolate, oily body and a huge age-driven complexity. The only quibble: bitterness and a hint of smoke that can nudge toward whisky.

18.11.2025 Relaxing with a very good rum. Tomorrow I will have my 60th birthday and a big party in Saturday where I'm looking forward to seeing family, friends and the rum crew 😊 ------------- Having this one on my upper shelf, where all the yummy stuff is always makes me happy. I have retasted it and compared to my old notes. This time it got a few more points. This is a very heavy rum that needs a frop of water and a rest before you give it a go. The nose is wonderful yet kind of light, setting off with fruits and some varnish before serving nuts, chocolate and spices before ending it with oak. The palate is, now hold on, a well balanced and complex experience. Bitter and dry at the same time and it draws nice oily curtains. Lots of fruit topped with caramel, spices and smoky oak.

Extremely high quality, oily viscosity on the palate with plenty of licorice, treacle, tobacco and leather notes. Famously balanced wood influence with a rich hint of smokiness in the finish, which, like the alcohol, is perfectly integrated. Outstanding.

A nose that's at once lively, absolutely smooth and balanced - astonishing! The wood is clearly present, but without dominating. A nose reminiscent of an old Port macerated in prunes. I can't help thinking of a perfume with top notes and deeper, darker notes. The palate, too, is rather lively, with the alcohol softened by all these flavors. The finish is sumptuous, long with all the aromas right to the end. A fantastic rum! The empty glass exhales more woody and bitter flavors than on the palate. Thanks Artur for the sample.

Extremely dark old Demerara with intense notes of chocolate, nuts, raisin, some plum, port wine, burnt caramel, malt and cocoa. On the palate - in addition to the expected bitterness - there is indeed a slight smoky note that can be somewhat polarizing. For me, not too close to whisky and still within limits - although I am sensitive to this.

Late in the evening, out of nowhere, Jakob appeared in the hotel bar and pulled this sample out of his pocket and forced me to try it. The smell, taste and finish were simply indescribable. A grenade!!!

Tasted again today at leisure. Cocoa, toffee, dried fruit, barrel influences and lots of spices on the nose. Then a wealth of aromas on the palate. Insanely complex. It feels like there is more and more in the mouth. The finish is slightly bitter but not overdone. The 71% is very well integrated. The rum is more on the dark side. Fruity notes remain in the background. I'm glad I was able to try it. But the Cadenhead 1964 remains a nose length ahead for me.

retastes July 30th 2025. The Benchmark! is this the new benchmark, the perfect rum? After having tasted two Cadenheads 1964 today, which can’t get any better, this one on the nose lifts the bar! A vintage port or very old tawny port, like the 50yo Grahams I opened recently. Extremely complex but smooth, a symphony of flavors. Candied walnuts, red fruits, burned caramel. Rich, rich, rich! Out of this world on the palate! Old port on a highest level. Strong influence of the cask, the high ABV is perfectly integrated. Very woody but so fantastically balanced, it’s impossible to describe. This is rum heaven. The finish is endless in the sense of infinite. Never had a rum in the glass that dark! This is the benchmark. Have a bottle 😍10.2 or the Cadenheads go to 9.8

What a rum! Impressive depths. Very heavy, bold, dark, mature. Extasy on tongue. Nose is charismatic, heavy, roasted, some cholcolate, spice, on palate velvety, oily, smoky, dry fruits, vanilla, caramel and much more and long finish with coffe and chocolate.. what a rum.. so diferent and so special. EDIT tasting it again few weeks later and I keep my high rating for this exclusive rum... unbelievable smooth, balanced and tasty spirit

On a special day ( birthday of my wife) I drank this very special rum. First of all I would like to thank my fellow RumX forum member for this special opportunity to experience this rum. Back to the rum: What a color, deep dark intense color. very beautiful. In the glass it gives a wonderful smell. fruity, spicy, round, pure chocolate, port, grapes.. I could go on and on. Wonderfully full and complex. Then the first sip: my taste buds thought what are we getting now.. Wait a moment, and then it starts!! A very warm glow through my mouth. As if my mouth and taste buds spontaneously fell in love with it. Wonderful warmth is released, warm chocolate, herbs, nuts, fruity and coffee. Very complex experience. full and oily. Alcohol is very well integrated. The aftertaste: endless!! wonderfully full aftertaste. coffee and caramel and a bit fruity. I let it rest in my glass for a long time, smelled it a lot and on advice added a bit of water at the end and repeated the ritual again. This is a wonderful treat and I am very happy and privileged to have tasted this rum.

What a beautiful beast with over 71%< simply amazing. Riding the chocolate and hazelnut wave with some raisins, this is tender to your palate. Caramell on spicy oak goodnes. The potency leaves room for a complex and subtle aroma. Wow!
