Brugal 1888 Doblemente Añejado
"Best drank neat" and warmed in the hand is the recurring tip here — several tasters say it opens up as the glass hits body temperature. Expect a Brugal in the Spanish style: sherry and oak up front, caramel, vanilla and dried fruit behind it. Sweet but not cloying, and a bit woody. A few find the 40% a touch hot on opening.

Sherry-and-oak Spanish sipper, lightly sweet Well-liked easy sipper with clear sherry-cask and oak character. Less sugary than many Spanish-style rums, but several find it a bit thin, hot on opening, and short on depth.

The good thing about this rum is that it has not been excessively sugared, like many other rums from this category. However, it is not particularly praiseworthy at first sight because of the alcoholic note, but if you give it a little time, you get a wonderfully woody sherry nose. In addition, caramel and some fruit. In the mouth then even the dark flavors dominate, which makes this rum something special.

I have not tried many rums. But I did not like this one. Nose was strong. Taste was better.

21.12.2025 Having a friend over who is not up to the heavier stuff, so we run through a few lighter rums. This is still my wifes favourite baking rum. ---------- This is a rum that can be rated incorrectly because it is unique in its own way. Initially I rated this rum very low until I found out that it needs to rest for a long while and not only rest standing still. You need to hand warm it and around 25 degrees C. the rum really opens up. The sherry cask and oak is very obvious from nose to finish. The rum was first released in 2011 and its a rum in the cheap end. Price to quality is very good.

8,3:The nose very woody, but a sense of balance is immediately apparent. This woodiness is tinged with caramel and molasses, simple and classic aromas that are not disturbed by a sensation of sweetness or alcohol. The latter is well-integrated, accompanied by a slight solvent aspect that gives an impression of concentration and impresses the aromas well. The nose opens with rounder notes of coconut, the woodiness melting into milk jam perfumed with orange peel and sweet spices (cinnamon). Aeration brings floral notes and then it's the nuts that stand out this time. It's a rather pleasant, well-balanced, mellow but not sweet. Coconut now becomes a constant...Very promising! 7:On the palate, the texture is light, the attack marked above all by a very toasty woodiness that quickly takes hold of the taste buds. The entry is straightforward with the wood leading the way, soon supported by a spices-pepper. Once this rather lively phase is over, the character quickly becomes light and even a little watery. The wood and pepper continue to swarm across the tongue, sprinkling it with smoky notes of molasses and caramel. 7:On the finish, it's the smokiness of very strongly toasted wood that remains, with hints of vanilla. It is quite short. Well, quite a dissapointment later on.... Edit:10.9.25

Well-balanced and soft taste with body and character. A sweetness of caramel and vanilla balanced with peach, cocoa - long and elegant aftertaste with a hint of honey.

Hier noch 6 must do's, irgendwann bestellt, heute getrunken.
Review by Galli33
Solid rum. Significant taste of leather in the finish… Pleasant to drink… don’t knock your socks off 😜
Review by wrighty03
Decent when drank cold, but as mentioned in many reviews really comes alive when warmed in the hand. Wonderfully smooth very easy to drink, simple pallet but with discerning flavours of sherry and oak, very pleasant rum to sip. The more you sip the better it gets.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A Hispanic style rum that offers everything in the region and in this style. The nose is open with aromas of brown sugar and caramel, coffee, wood and chocolate. On the palate, there is a thick texture, an almost honeyed side, some spices and dried fruits. The sweetness predominates in an obvious way. In the finish, a slight smoky side stands out from the rest, relatively flat and ephemeral.A rum less sweet than usual, therefore more authentic but which clearly lacks depth to stand out. It will undoubtedly pass better in digestive with a cigar.
Review by Rumpalumpa

"Whisky Live 2023, quick tasting session! RON's not my thing, but this is really nice on sherry and without too much sugar. Plus a great welcome at the stand. To sum up, my tasting notes: On the nose: Caramel, Sherry, Vanilla In the mouth: Sherry, Orange zest, Spicy Finish: Vanilla, Sweet".
Review by Ondřej Koller
Nice dry rum, very drinkable and mild. Lot of vanilla and spices in the nose. Softly bittering in the end
Review by Cinci
It was served to me by friends, you almost can't say no. Well, unfortunately far too sweet for me and therefore not really enjoyable. The sweet vanilla and caramel notes cover up almost everything, otherwise only a little wood and sweetness come through.

Very nice dominican Rum
Review by Émile Shevek
The nose is alcoholic and sweet with notes of molasses, tobacco, some barrel, leather and cocoa. On the first sip you feel the sweetness(molasses/bourbon) then it turns and becomes dry with notes of cork/wood, then spice and some leather/leather. Lacks a bit in depth and complexity but is a pleasure to sip. In the empty glass leather, sherry, roasted. Outstanding value for money.

This has bias on a review as was sipped on the day of engagement in Dominican Republic so maybe tasted through happy sunglasses. I had a sample of this on the rocks . sultanas, dates and honey, with a touch of gentle smoke. Buttery and sweet with butterscotch, .

I liked it, I found it different from the Rums I had been drinking, so much so that the bottle lasted a few hours. "Sherry!" that flavor that I could not find and at the end of the bottle I discovered it. I will soon buy another bottle to appreciate it better. Salu! 🥃

Today i went to a free spirits festival and this was one of the rums they had to try. This one is very sweet with hints of toffee and spices. Very smooth tho. But it costed 72€ over there, too much imo. At around 50€ it would be ok.
Review by Abrahan Reyes
I was a bit skeptical about buying this rum, glad that I did. Excellent Spanish-style rum. The Sherry cask enhances this spirit and adds some sweet notes to the rum that otherwise might be too woody and plain. My favorite Spanish-style rum so far.

I find it very suitable neat as a starter rum. But it doesn't currently match my taste profile for drinking neat. It's not as sweet as others in this category. But for me it's one of my favorites in a CubaLibre or simply with a cool rum and coke in the garden in the sunshine.
Review by abaker-rum
Medium intensity aroma, with strong charred barrel notes, caramel, toffee, vanilla, and dried fruit. It is off-dry with some sweetness and a mouthfilling texture. The finish is medium in length with a plum note and barrel char.

Smooth, not as sweet as others have described and goes great with a big rock!
Review by ordogh
My first Brugal as the spanish style is not my cup of tea. The smell is spice driven, with caramel and some woody notes. The taste is very paralell with it, spices lead by vanilla, spices from the barrel and some toffee-caramell taste. Its sweetness could be tempting, but too much for me. Overall a nice spanish style rum, but still not my favourite style.
Review by Claes Nilsson
Quite nice despite the low ABV, a lot of taste. I like the Sherry tones
Review by Tano
Good spanish style rum. Sweet but not the artificial sweetness of the usual suspects like Diplomático or Zacapa. Very smooth overall and an easy sipper with just enough complexity of flavours. I've been drinking regular Brugal and Brugal extra viejo for years and I was expecting a bit more woody and musty flavours (something close to licking a barrel), but this is not the case. These flavours are more elegant and not as agressive as those 2 rums. I tried it on cuba libre too and it was ok, just too smooth to shine on the mix. Overall, a good sipper for the price that I paid (30€) and something adequate for people that want to get into spanish rums but don't like strong dosed stuff. Personally, this is a bit bland to be one of my favourites spanish style rums. Id like to see a 45+ version to see if it gets the bite that Im missing.

B.. Drinks: - Pur: 4.5/5 - Rum Cola: 4/5

It is a good rum, as long as it is drunk at the right time and in the right place. Wood, spice, leather, but also vanilla and caramel, you can taste it all. 👍
Review by Peter Sjoroos
Kinda flat, but some nuances of aging. Good rum for mixing drinks though.

Money thrown out the window.
Review by Brandon Gerling
Nose is fruity, slightly alcoholic and fairly rounded, if I really try and decipher notes I feel like there’s orange peel and citrus, definitely caramel and vanilla. On the palate it’s earthy almost like a glue taste at the initial sip, and then the wood and vanilla sneaks in. Very pleasant sipper, would be great on ice as well I think to open it up a bit more.
Review by Leslie Haigh
its a typical Spanish rum nice and light the finish is very short very light in taste easy to sipe a bit sweet i would say this rum would be fantastic for beginners but has an experience rum drinker i find this rum to be a little disappointing
Review by Henry Davies
A bit drier than Santa Teresa but fairly similar. Light sweet caramel nose, a bit flatter in the mouth but nice slightly dry finish. Good balance of sweet notes, spice and leather. Solid but not exceptional
Review by Motvind
Review by Dave Dahlgren
Review by seefarr
Actually deliciously dry. Way more burn than the 40% should be. Not my thing but not bad.
Review by robinho92
Easy to enjoy rum. Not complex, rather round. Very good for beginners.

Best for mixing in my opinion
Review by Alexandre Rolin
Review by Kasper
Lovely and very promising nose, however falls short in taste. Sweetness is significant and while it's a pleasant round roasted taste it's too short and not deep or complex enough for the price (50€)
Review by Takaró Péter
I was always wondering how the taste can be “woody”..well,this is THE ONE.Big fat capital Oak with alcoholy aftertaste,Not for me though..

Pretty good offering, good sipper, not overly sweet and flavors are not hidden by sugar. Easy to drink no hit of alcohol, very plesant

Hint of maple syrup, as my mom pointed out. Dark copper pour. A hint of oak, some lemon, peel included.
