S.B.S Panama 2006
"Easy drinking Panama with some herbal notes," as one taster put it — and that's the through-line here. Caramel, cinnamon and soft oak lead, with a round mouthfeel and dark forest-berry fruit underneath. At 57% the alcohol sits surprisingly quietly; several members note you barely feel the proof. The one gripe is a finish that's medium at best and fades sooner than the flavor deserves.

The woody flavors are quite noticeable, but are not dominant. There are spicy, fruity and also sweet hints which add extra character and depth. A pleasant and nice easy drinking rum 👍

Medium to long finish, price to quality is good.

Odor: toasted / caramelized Tastes less toasted than the nose might suggest. A little spicy but round and caramelized to the taste. Good intensity. Average length on the palate. The alcohol is not too dominant, and you don't really feel that it's 57%. A pleasant surprise, a nice, accessible rum.

An interesting opportunity to taste Varela rum in higher strength. And I must say, it is pretty solid one with flavour profile of sweet honey and dark forest fruits. The nose is predominantely dark with dried fruits, wood and clear port influence. There is also bit of spices, but it did not prepare me what is to come in the taste! The mouthfeel has medium density and it's full of forest berries! But like really full. I love it. There is also some honey and sweet spices. The only thing I am a bit upset about is the finish, which is quite short and not too dominant. Was it more pronounced, I'd rate this rum higher. But still I can say I really like this.

Read full review →This had a similar profile to the Mezan Panama releases albeit slightly less perfumed. The extra ABV certainly released a lot more of the flavours. I suspect head to head, I might find the lower proof Mezan a little thin nowadays. A pleasant surprise.
