One taster said the empty glass smelled like "burned plums on top of grandma's plum cake" — and that dried-plum nose is what everyone comes back to. This 1975 Port Mourant is intense, oily and dark: prunes, licorice, cola, leather and old wet oak. The palate turns drier and more bitter, like strong espresso, and several felt it runs thin for a 37-year-old at nearly 50%.

Update 10.02.2025 Stefan gave me the unique opportunity to taste the 74 Cadenhead PM, the 64 Cadenhead PM and the 75 Silver Seal PM at the same time - a thousand thanks for this opportunity! But what can I say about the rums? How can I do them justice and compare them fairly? I would probably have to devote entire evenings to each one. I thought they were all great. The Silver Seal, with its intense prune, had the most beautiful nose. In the mouth, it's a little thinner and not quite at the same level as the Cadenheads. I find it infinitely difficult to categorize the rums in a meaningful way. The last few sips were best when I was concentrating on the enjoyment and less on the analysis. The Cadenheads are both great - but also not a different world of rum compared to the 1986 Enmore or the 1975 Silver Seal. All insanely good. Unfortunately, I don't have the opportunity to differentiate substantially at this level. +1 Original 02/10/2024 This is a beautiful rum. I'm delighted to have had the chance to try it - thank you very much, Stefan! The profile is Port Mourant per excellence. I have the Karaya in my glass at the same time - the similarities are amazing. Despite the difference in age, Silver Seal is much more intense, while the differences in the profile are mainly characterized by the caramel.

01.02.2025 retasting at the Nordlichtertreffen and still great --------------------- 09.02.2024 Nordlichter treffen. Retasting and I stick to my initial score. --------------------- Opening this one also bacame a masterpiece of work as the Cork broke. Fortunately Stefan didn't give up and after a trip to a decanter and then back through a sift into the bottle, we tried to sniff the decanter and it was out of this world. We tried ti sniff the decanter the next day and it was like putting your nose into a freshly opened bag of prunes. ------------------ Had a nice evening with good friends and a bunch of Silver Seals, some with very nice age to them. This one is very nicely balanced once rested for a while. Woody with dried fruit and spices. I like the light leather, caramel and marzipan on the oily palate. Here I'd say oldies and goodies 😊

Very nice and richt bottling indeed. Needs quite some pacience to open up, but after some the you are rewarded with a complex nose sporting dark and woody notes alongside some herbs. On the palate the PM is surprisingly approachable with surprisingly little bitterness, which only comes to play at the very end of the finish. Otherwise a brilliant combination of dark, roasted notes anlingside dried fruits and herbal notes which create a very complex array of aromas. Cheers to Stefan for the sample!

The smell is so great, fruit bread is the first thing I think of. The color in the glass, divine! In the mouth, such a beautiful blend of fruit and spice, you discover new facets with every sip. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. Anyone who likes good heavy rum will fall in love with this. Thanks to Stefan for the opportunity to try it, really not easy to get. Had the chance again

Franconian Tasting Gang Erstmal ein dickes Dankeschön in den Norden an MoparRules. So die Eindrücke noch einmal in Ruhe sacken lassen. Ich habe hier mit einer Holzig und Bitterkeit gerechnet. Dem ist aber gar nicht so. Was für eine positive Überraschung. Einfach ein sehr edler Tropfen, den die wenigsten in ihrem Leben wohl im Glas haben werden. Dafür muss man echt dankbar sein. Es ist eine Herausforderung das einigermaßen bei MoparRules ausgleichen zu können.

One impression is simply confirmed time and time again. Both this and the other PM 75 version from Silver Seal are among the best old school PM noses I know. Without ifs and buts! The smell is incredibly intense, very, very round and simply has everything you would expect from a 75 PM. I particularly notice the sweet, dark fruitiness and tropical fruitiness. A really catching combination of raisins, prunes, passion fruit and passion fruit. The characteristic old, wet and musty wood is also fully present and is on a par with the fruitiness. It continues with lots of dark notes such as treacle, caramel, cola and Ricola herbs. Unfortunately, both Silver Seals have the same weakness: the palate can't quite deliver what the nose promises. Other 75s can do this somewhat better. Even though the rum is still almost 50%, it really seems extremely thin. Sweetness is only perceptible at a medium level, if at all, and the bitterness really hits the longer it is in the mouth. At the beginning there are still clear dried fruits, but these are then covered by herbal and roasted notes. In my memory, the other version is definitely a little better in the mouth. It should have come out of the barrel a little earlier. Overall, I like younger old school PMs with more ABV a little better. The absolute crowning glory here is clearly the Uitvlugt 75 from Cadenheads with over 70% However, this should not obscure the fact that this is still an excellent rum and a liquid story, which undoubtedly satisfies the old PM craving profile

What a nose! Prunes, lots of spice, cola, Maggi, licorice. I agree with Serge that it reminds me of a good REV. If there was a perfume with these notes, I would buy it. Wood on the palate, of course, but just right. Because of the color and the age, I expected wood without end. Enough power, even if ABV suggested less. Thanks to Stefan for the donation to FRTG. This gives you a place in my hall of fame of rum friends 😁

When you open the sample, you are immediately greeted by the most intense scent of moist prunes. Wonderfully fruity and not at all what you would expect from "younger" PMs. The closest asossation might be a 94 REV. Let it rest for now. After a good hour, great notes of licorice, spices and cola (good cola) with orange oils. In addition, beautiful wood, leather and a wonderfully dark and dense character. A dream. Much less bitter on the palate than expected. Beautifully dry. Black tea, earth, cocoa and plum jam join the elements of the nose. Wonderful. A new aspect with every sip. Many (many) thanks Stefan for this very generous sample donation to the Franconian Tasting Gang. ❤️

Childhood memories! My grandma cooking plum jam on her old, wood fired oven. What an intense and heavy rum on the nose. The dried plums are so present snd dominant, amazing. Different on the palate with a strong bitterness like a strong espresso. Not for cappuccino drinkers and sedan drivers. Burned caramel, oak, espresso, spicy. An imense density. Not as complex as the recently tasted Diamonds Velier 1996 and 1999 but even heavier and richer, more oily. Endless finish of espresso and oak. The empty glas has s mind blowing smell like the burned plums on top of grandma’s plum cake. Love it.

Man kommt ja nicht jeden Tag in den Genuss eines so außergewöhnlich alten Rum. Lakritze, leichte Bitterstoffe, Holz und Getrocknete Früchte geben sich die Klinke in die Hand. Schön trocken im Geschmack und die Bitterkeit verfliegt dann auch sehr schnell. Dann kommt ein gar leider nicht sooo langer Abgang mit ordentlich Lakritze. Schönes Teil. Danke Stefan ! Heute nochmal probiert, immer noch geil. Doch aufgrund des nicht so langen Abgangs leicht korrigiert

Nase: Alle Trockenfrüchte dieser Welt. Gaumen: Eine wunderschöne Harmonie aus Trockenfrüchten, Traubennoten und gebranntem Karamell. Leicht bitter und ganz leicht etwas Minze im Hintergrund, etwas Schwarztee. Ganz großartiger Port Mourant! Edit: Leider einfach nur geil. Brutal harmonisch, mit viel Trockenpflaume, Nussigkeit und etwas Bleistift.

Vielen Dank Stefan für die Möglichkeit diesen hervorragenden Rum probieren zu dürfen. Spannender Vergleich mit dem Karaya, Port Mourant ist klar zu erkennen. Man merkt ihm die extra Jahre an, aber das kann er ab. Der wird nicht zu holzig sondern einfach reifer und eleganter. Das ganze mit einer ordentlichen Portion Trockenfrüchte.

Finally able to try this legendary release from Silver Seal ! The least we can say is that this rum does not disappoint. Nose is perfectly balanced but the palate unfortunately lacks a bit of sweet notes compared to the latter. The finish is super long with a nice hint of floral notes. An outstanding representative of dark Port Mourant rums which totally deserve its legend 😋

Hutný olejovitý profil port mourant. Intenzivní vůně plná sušeného ovoce, tabáku, kuže s černého čaje. Chuť je plná a velmi komplexní. Plno tónů čokolády, ovoce, tabáku a kůže. Velmi vyjímečný zážitek.
