Cadenhead's Caroni TMCG HTR 1998
Rubber, tar and warm leather with a surprising fruity lift — pineapple, cherry, a bit of kumquat — over oily, heavy body. Several tasters call the nose "floral rubber tire" and machine-shop classic Caroni. At 61.6% the heat is big but mostly well integrated. A textbook 1998 HTR; a few felt it plays the archetype a touch safe rather than doing anything wild.

A nose of incredible softness, with rubber and lots of fruit. Kumquat, almond, a very pleasant vanilla woodiness. The alcohol is a bit more present on the palate with a slight sharpness at the start, then this rum fills the mouth with fruit, nuts, spices, varnish, and a tar background that enhances all the flavors. A tropical garden by the roadside. The finish is very long, with noble bitter flavors and a woodiness a bit more pronounced than on the palate. A citrus (kumquat) reappears right at the end. A real surprise, a delicious rum even if it is fruitier and more floral than the more powerful Caronis. Everything is balanced. Tasted again with an almost empty bottle, a very beautiful rum!

In the vein of the 1998 Caroni, Cadenhead's presents a lovely vintage with no real false notes. The nose opens with exotic pineapple fruit, then diverges with rounder cookie dough notes before falling back on a more classic profile: machine shop, smoky wood and warm spices are there to awaken the senses. The attack on the palate is lively, heavy and intense, but also oily and round. Rubber and tar are still warm, followed by tropical fruit, spices (vanilla, chili), oak, leather and hot caramel, which adds a touch of sweetness. Although the profile is well mastered, it lacks that little touch of madness that would set it apart from other Caronis of this fairly widespread vintage. The same applies to the finish. It's long, warm, petroliferous, smoky, with fruity touches and almost burnt caramel. Smoky oak, warm spices and leather are also present. This is a fine Caroni, but one that struggles to break away from the archetypal genre (or perhaps my palate is becoming demanding).

#4527 14.12.2023 The second Caroni of the evening and it's also a very nice and well balanced one. The Caroni profile is medium strong and there is a nice fruity touch to it. The palate is oily, well rounded and fresh with some cherry. The finish os medium to long with a light minty touch.

Solid 98 Caroni, rather sweet nose with notes of pastry and cookie dough, the machine shop follows a bit later. Continues on the palate, the wood enters here gently together with some nice fruits. Long finish, great alcohol integration. Close runner up today, wonderful expression.

Good HTR that needs some time to unfold. 2. Tasting After my first tasting, I have to revise my rating slightly downward. Solid continental Caroni. Alcohol could be better integrated. Nevertheless, beautifully complex, oily, and heavy.

15/12/22: still like it. Not a very heavy Caroni, more fruity/dirty, but very nice. The bottle is almost finished now and that has made the rum more mellow.I have rather limited experience with Caroni rums so far. The characteristic factors are certainly there, but more subtle and less "dirty." In the nose I find it more fruity and medicinal, on the tongue very intense/complex with a serious kick from the alcohol with afterwards rather some mineral and earthy characteristics exactly.I do find it incredibly good and appropriate to taste on World Rum Day.Cheers 🌎🥃🧡

First time having a Caroni and it did not disappoint. This rum was such a great experience - deep, bold, woodiness, smokiness and big body and finish. So glad I got a chance to try this and probably one of my favourite runs to date.

Everything you would expect from a 1998 Caroni. It’s really nice overall and scratching the 9.0 rating (from my perspective) but for this something is missing. Where is the menthol I was promised? Nevertheless a great drop.

Ein intensives Brett, das schwere Süße, brackige Aromen und Holz gut zusammen bringt. Die über 60% schieben das Ding kräftig an, da ist für feine Aromen kaum Platz, was aber auch nicht weiter stört. Der geht hart und voll auf die Zwölf. Macht Spaß. 91/100 oder 8/10

Mild and sweet. ... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory a rum that was added at a ratio of 1:10 to a navy blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.
