Valdespino Legend of Cuban Rum Pre-1962 1944
Sip this neat, at room temperature — it's built for slow contemplation, not cola. Expect a sweet, oily, creamy body with dried apricot, milk chocolate, brown sugar and roasted almond, plus sherry-cask influence and a smoky, lightly tannic finish. Tasters call it "flüssige Geschichte" — liquid history from Cuba. The nose wins people over; a few feel the palate stays rounder than remarkable.

How does Valdespino Legend of Cuban Rum Pre-1962 1944 taste?
Aggregated from 35 community reviews.
Sweet, chocolatey old Cuban sipper Loved for its chocolatey, sherry-touched Cuban character and a gorgeous nose. Several agree the palate is softer than the age and hype promise — memorable more as history than as pure wow.

Very but very delicious and all those years in a Spanish bodega didn't turn it into a sherry bomb but more likely added layers to its Guyanese profile. Understand a very chocolatey cuban rum with texture!!!
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Cuba in its purest form. Tobacco, milk chocolate, black pepper, dried apricot, cola and popcorn with stock honey. Sweet, creamy and slightly bitter astringent. Great smokiness and slight acidity on the finish. Really exciting and extraordinary!

Liquid history from Cuba. Extremely mild, balanced and yet intense. Really great nose! Beautiful chocolate and roasted aromas. Sherry and at the same time bitter and sweet - but not unpleasant. Exceptional Spanish-style rum!

Another slightly old tasting but I have more notes on it. The nose is sweet and balanced with wood and nuts and a lovely floral note. The palate is very sweet, oily and round with smoky wood, dried fruit, brown sugar and a hint of marzipan at the end. The finish is medium long with smoky wood, dried fruit and brown sugar. Pretty sweet and definitely an good rum for cakes etc.

Good Spanish-style rum with distinct sherry notes. However, it lacks complexity and percentages.

A piece of rum history! It has the typicality of all Cuban rums, smooth and elegant and enveloping, with a higher intensity than others of its kind.In my opinion, however, for the price at which it is found today, it lacks aromatic complexity and power. There are many other rums less expensive than this one that have an edge!
Review by GigiMartini
A difficult rum to judge. Expectations are high, both because of the age of distillation and the price. Trying to be as objective as possible, I can say that the nose is rich and definitely pleasant, even with an empty glass. The palate holds up much less, is round, decently structured, but lacks the wow effect. More drinkable than memorable. It remains, however, an offbeat experience. Weighted rating on a nose of 85, and a palate under 80
