Velier Appleton Hearts Collection (2025 Edition) 1999
People are genuinely split on this 26-year Appleton. Everyone agrees the nose is lovely — dried fruit, spice, resin, a touch of mint — but the palate turns very woody and drying, with cola-nut herbal notes and heat that takes a long time to settle. Give it an hour in the glass and it opens up. Dark, spicy, tropical esters underneath, but the oak dominates.

How does Velier Appleton Hearts Collection (2025 Edition) 1999 taste?
Aggregated from 20 community reviews.
Woody, spicy old Appleton that needs air Great nose, serious tannic oak on the palate. Several find the alcohol poorly integrated and the wood too heavy; fans call it complex and satisfying once it breathes for an hour.
Experienced drinkers who love heavily tropical-aged, oak-forward Jamaican pot still
Anyone put off by strong tannic wood or hot, unintegrated alcohol

Daher doch deutlich aufgewertet. Am Ende trotzdem nicht wirklich überzeugend.

So, after I had the rum in the glass yesterday and it surprisingly didn't convince me, I of course had to taste it again today, this time against the "old" Appleton 1999 (RX7801). And now, after the tasting, I (almost) stick to my verdict from yesterday: RX26144 is a solid rum for advanced drinkers, but unfortunately on the palate it not only has an acidity problem (wet wood), but the alcohol is also not very well integrated. Quite different is RX7801: balanced, optimally "powered," with a great and rare juniper note as well as fennel (?) – herbs like I like in rum. Please try the two rums against each other yourselves, then you might understand why the "new" Appleton 1999 doesn't score quite as well with me as you might expect given the specs.

After a long breathing time (which this rum really needs because of the alcohol strength), a wide potpourri of tropical fruits, a pleasant sweetness, intense wood, and various spices reveal themselves – with every sip, you taste something new here. I'm curious how the open bottle will change the rum.

Borderline woody, tropical esters, very light fruits, dominant mint notes. I need to compare it with the other Appletons sometime. Right now, after some rather mediocre rums, this one surprisingly seems pretty good to me...

Schöner, sehr kräftiger und würziger Appleton. Dunkles Profil mit reichlich Alkohol. Tolle Nase.

I like this one clearly better than the old 1999. Still definitely on the woody side but with more dried fruit, less woody acidity, and a bit more depth and spice. The alcohol could be a bit better integrated, but overall this is a clear improvement over the old 1999 bottling. Still, it won't be my favorite in the Hearts series. 😄

Honestly, this one was a ride. Firstly, this is a sweet and strong rum - do not take it lightly. Onto the review. The smell is outright sweet and alcoholic but has a lot of woody smell. I was impressed as it is the first time I actually smelled the wood. Tasting is another ride. First off the alcohol is very very strong here and then the flavours beneath it are just as dominating. The blend of spiciness and sweet sensations melded well to leave a very long lasting impression. When I say it lasted, it is the first rum ever to leave an actual taste for more than a couple of minutes. I will only recommend this rum to rum lovers. This is after considering the price per bottle and the value it holds. Also please consider using a wine cork dispenser - the bottle is not very well designed for pouring (wasted a shot to pour out 2).

This is what I’m looking for in an Appleton. String fruity and spice notes that integrate well their the age and wood. Needs a fair amount of time to breath and I find the wood is really the strongest flavor here (shouldn’t be a surprise based on the amount of tropical aging) but for the niche it fills I find it one of the most satisfying releases. Would I buy it again for the price? Probably not. But it is a great bottle to have in the collection and one I will reach for when I’m really craving

Kurzer Abgang. Kräuter und Gewürze. Tolle Nase, aber dann viel zu holzig. Der 1999.1 ist eindeutig mehr Genuss.
