La Maison & Velier Hampden LROK Single Cask for The Nectar LROK 2021

Buy this expecting Hampden funk and the sherry cask will ambush you — raisins, walnut, dried dates and a vineous bitterness that all but erases the LROK mark underneath. Several tasters say it "screams fortified wine" more than rum, with a musty, meaty, tannic finish that divides people hard. A few enjoy it after long oxidation; more call it a cask experiment gone too far.

Sherry-bomb Hampden that buries the funk Genuinely polarizing. Most drinkers feel the ex-sherry cask smothered the Hampden and left it bitter and unbalanced; a minority insist it opens up given weeks of air.

8,3:On the nose, strong barrel impact with sherry like leather, dried dates, walnuts, meaty tones, slightly overpowering the notes like banana, flowery, herbaceous molasses with briny olive, some yeast, spicy touch. On aeration, the wood is roasted with coffee, cocoa, caramel, the molasses is musty, slightly dark with licorice, but still quite fresh with tea.Red fruits arise, sulphurous undertones. 8,2:On the palate, the attack is strong, syrupy with sherry barrel impact, again slightly overpowering Hampden markers, the oak is charred with dark chocolate, cocoa, meaty, leather and walnuts, peppery, dried fruits like raisins and apricots, dates, pineapple and banana participate, the molasses is bitter, musty, slightly flowery, vegetal with briny olive, chamomile...When the rum is well rested, plastic hints join. 8:The finish is long, due to strong barrel touch, dirty, dry and tannic, with charred wood, smoky, spicy, meaty, pairing dried, tropical, green, red and citrus fruits, slightly rotten and grassy, candied molasses, musty, earthy with tobacco..

I just don't understand how you can mess up a Hampden like this. The sherry cask overpowers everything, so sherry, red wine, and wood dominate. A bit of orange peel and mustiness join in — you can't taste anything from the LROK.

#6417 01.03.2026 Relaxing with this sherry bomb while watching the new movie "The Bluff". This rum was destroyed by the cask in my mind and all balance has gone. In my mind an example of how wrong things can go when you cask wrong or for too long.

Wow, the sherry is way too dominant, it crushes everything. Hampden is basically unrecognizable. Could be some Cuban rum as well.

Love it or hate it, there is nothing in between. Sure the nose immediately show the casktyp and we all know, it’s not the most beloved one in the rumworld, but wait how it’s developing in open bottles. This juice needs time and oxidation.
