In short: Muffbombe! Musty and damp on the nose, heavy old sherry in wet casks, a slightly fruity hint of plums and at some point a hint of ester. Very similar on the palate: medicinal, musty, flat, here too the esters of the Jamaican base material only appear after a thick fog on Muff. For me, this is a completely overdone rum that can only faintly reveal its basic character, its DNA and thus its origins. Perhaps something for relevant (whisky) fans of this house, for me rather a failed attempt.

A tasting at my wine shop that's a pleasure 👍 👃 Very intense, on spices, salt, pepper, cured meats. It's honeyed, honey candy, then light dry hay, very sweet caramel, dark chocolate and its full-bodied but not very bitter coffee, crème caramel finally, sweetness. Brine invites itself, the olive is there, slight lactic fermentation, esters well present behind the 12-year aging in Pedro Ximenez casks. Very dry fruit in paste form (blackcurrants, figs), followed by banana flambéed in rum, plantain-style. A hint of candied pineapple appears and leaves. A nose that still has much to reveal. 😋 More of the same, barrel woodiness at the top, brine, olive, saltiness again, salty soy sauce. Evolves into licorice, caramel, heather honey, dried vanilla bean, tight coffee, roasted coffee bean, dark chocolate. Fermented fruit (banana, fig, black berry, strawberry?). Evolving, complex palate. ⛳ Hint of mint, licorice, overripe but oh-so-good fruit, fir honey with salt. Esters at the service of PX rancio. Excellent, atypical, successful experiment 👌 This is what I expect from a Michel Couvreur rum; the typicality of the continental wet cellar aging dear to MC with a sufficiently spirited distillate coming out of the still so as not to be "overpowered" by the Pedro Ximenez. 💡 At this stage I'm leaning towards a high ester distillate from Hampden, perhaps a mark <>H.

This is a dank sherry bomb. An initial flood of musty prune turns into leather and tobacco on the back palate. Lacking a bit of body for me, but not bad by any means. I think i‘ll stick to the Couvreuer whiskies though. Edit: This really opens up after 15 minutes in the glass. The leather takes a back seat as the fruit lengthens into a nice finish. Still not spectacular, but better.
