Velier Cabeza Llena 1948
Collectors chasing a pre-revolution Cuban unicorn are the real audience here — a 1948 molasses rum, tropically aged 77 years and bottled by Velier. Old varnished wood, prune, cherry and dark chocolate on the nose, with that vinous rancio everyone keeps naming. The palate turns drier and narrower: leather, tobacco, bitter caramel, a touch of acidity. Elegant and lively for its age, though the finish falls short of the nose.

How does Velier Cabeza Llena 1948 taste?
Aggregated from 11 community reviews.
Ancient Cuban: gorgeous nose, drier palate Tasters agree the nose is stunning and the age barely believable, but several find the palate and finish thinner than the aromas promise. A liquid history piece more than an everyday pour.

A rum tasted at Whisky Live Paris 2025. A very refined and beautiful nose that bears its age. Dry, varnished old wood, volatile, caramel and a slight rancio note. Unfortunately, the palate is a little lacking, with dry wood, bitter caramel and a touch of acidity. If you compare it with Chapter 7 from the same year, there's no comparison. The palate clearly lags behind, without the exceptional rancio. The finish is moderately long, with good acidity and a surprisingly vinous side. The caramel and old varnished wood remain for a long time. A very fine rum and liquid history.

#7047 15.07.2026 Finally back home after a busy day and picking up a loaner because my car is in the shop for repairs. Listening to some nice Trance on Spotify. A nice rum that comes at a premium price tag. A sweet profile with fruits, spice, medicinal, glue, roasted wood, caramel and tobacco.

A Cuban rum from another era, paying great tribute to history and showing its age through a very elegant nose. The wood, a bit varnished, has undoubtedly left its mark, you can feel that tannic side, hints of plum and dried grape as well as caramel and some spices, and especially that rancio that gently caresses the nostrils, it’s very accomplished. It’s an almost heavy, indulgent profile yet very refined. The palate is a bit more restrained, a bit more marked by leather, tobacco, bitterness, and that toasted side. The varnished wood reinforces the profile a bit, it’s very present but shows restraint, not overpowering the other aromas. You can distinguish dried fruits, caramel, some spices, and always that rancio. There’s that almost winey side to the profile that adds a bit of weight, but it’s not bothersome. The alcohol still has some presence despite its advanced age. The finish, of medium length, is a bit narrow but the aromas persist, especially that fruity and winey facet, accompanied by noble wood and the roundness of caramel, offering a fairly concentrated profile towards the end. A real piece of history, which, it must be said, still has a few tricks up its still. It’s clearly finer and more expressive than expected; grandpa Cuban rum is not buried yet.

Messetasting Whisky Live Paris.

Whisky Live Paris 2025 - to be tasted again to confirm score and notes Another wow for this ron. Maybe too Easy, too open, considering the long time in the barrel. But i'm not in the Police, if they Say it's 1948, i assume that. And for the age, this is vivid and brilliant. Simply fantastic

Whisky Live Paris 2025, Listen what can one say. this is far from Horrible. A melange of old wood and raisin, some very old sherry cask. A smooth and komplex palate and the smoothest wood finish. This is fine and dandy, but still nothing to put in relation to its price.
