Grays New Grove Emotion 1969
Sip this one neat and give it a few minutes in the glass. It's a Mauritian blend (with a splash of 1969 in the mix) that leans on red fruit, dark chocolate, coffee and warm oak, with that signature New Grove menthol-eucalyptus lift on the finish. Several tasters mistook it for a Foursquare-TDL hybrid. Balanced and easy to drink, if a touch light-bodied at 47%.
The community says- Red fruit and cocoa
- Well-integrated alcohol
- But: Slightly thin body

Aggregated from 136 community reviews.
Fruity, chocolatey Mauritian sipper with menthol finish A widely liked "hidden champion" for many: fruity, chocolatey and beautifully balanced with a minty finish. The common gripe is that the low ABV leaves it slightly thin and short.

Incredibly beautiful, inviting nose of rose petals, caramelized pink grapefruit and a little mint. On the palate, cocoa, coffee, allspice, vanilla and a little cherry are joined by pink grapefruit, sea salt flakes and mocha. The mint and a subtle woodiness return on the finish. The 47% is perfectly chosen. Not too thin, not too strong. Great bottling, very complex and balanced! Could also pass blind as a hybrid of TDL and Foursquare. Thank you Gunnar!

It is rare, far too rare, to discover a diamond among pebbles. And if it happens by chance, it's all the more incredible. But it actually happened with this rum! I'm still blown away. The rum already promises a lot on the nose and reminds me of an old Demerara. So tempting that I can't wait to taste it. Very fruity on the palate, overripe blackcurrants? The alcohol is more perfectly integrated than I have ever experienced with any other rum. The maximum has really been extracted from the 47% vol. The only small drawback: a slight lack of depth and intensity due to the low ABV. But such a small "impurity" is easy to get over with such a fine diamond, isn't it? Top rum under the radar. Update 2023-10-06: The rum remains a top product for me, but has found its champion in the Savoir Faire 2009 with 60% (RX2744). Update 2023-10-18: Tasting again against the RX2744, this time direct. And I have to say that a direct comparison is really enlightening - and doesn't end well for the Emotion 1969 ... It seems like the league leader of the 2nd division playing at the top level in its class against a Champions League team ... 🙄 Try it out and you'll find it confirmed. RumX Advent calendar 09.12.2023 (blind tasting) I wrote in the appropriate place before solving the puzzle: Yes, on the nose I'm also more with FS, although what's amazing here is that you really perceive zero alcohol! A completely different rum on the palate: Not warm-caramel like on the nose, but clearly red-fruity and a little spicy. And what do I always associate with red fruit? That's right, Mauritius! Since this rum is not an alcohol monster, but rather under 50% vol. I'm guessing RX2495. Of course, it could also be another New Grove from Grays with around 45% vol. as there are still a few around ... Or maybe even a TDL. In any case, I like the rum very much. :yum::yum::yum:

Exceptional profile. Almost with some dosage, I suspect. Somewhat scratchy finish despite only 47% and high price. Blind tasting.

Wonderful blend of wood influence and fruitiness. Really fun!
Review by DomM
Nice intensity given its low ABV. Nose is intense with honey and spices (cinnamon) as well as some tropical fruits showing nice aging and cask influence. Notes on the palate largely match the nose. Nice intensity and complexity. Definitely raises interest for more bottlings out of Grays.
Review by cigares
A fruity nose with lychee, brown sugar, banana and gentian. More interesting on the palate than the nose would suggest, with complexity, fruit and more root. Medium finish with blackcurrant. A rum with a very fine mouthfeel but a nose that's a little behind the times.
Review by Jakob
Very round nose, warm wood meets fresh and dried fruit and fine spices. On the palate, the latter take the reins and take control with very crisp roasted notes. The fruit complements the spectrum and creates a harmonious overall picture, which lacks the final complexity and therefore cannot reach even higher rating spheres for me.

Retasting at Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. --------------------- The other day I picked up a shipment of rum and I have now surpassed 200 rums in my collection. This particular rum i am enjoying right now and its a really nice and typical rum from Mauritius. Fruity spice nose going onto a wonderful fruity palate with vanilla and a hint of coffee. The oldest rum in this blend is from 1969 (10% of the blend) and it gives a nice depth to the final blend. The proof has been very well integrated with the fruit and spices. Price to quality is very good though it can be hard to get a bottle.

Even if the rum is not overly complex opens here an extremely delicious aroma of wood, citrus, mint and eucalyptus. An absolute insider tip.
Review by Righrum
RumX advent calendar - day 9 A bit weak due to low abv. Some leather notes reminds of st lucia, and is missing the usual mango while in mouth there are tropical fruits that recall me of rums from clarendon
Review by LukaŽiga
8,4:On the nose, the first impression we get is very pleasant with dried fruits like raisins, apricots and citrus with an orange, as a wood is roasted with caramel, pastry, nuts, spicy with vanilla, nutmeg, shortly full-bodied. On aeration, a molasses brings tea and musty, slightly minty notes, some peaches pop up, dried currants. Some tannins are present, bring waxes, there might be some rubber. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is mostly fruity with tropical fruits like passion fruit, pineapple, later toasted coconut and even banana, dried fruits like raisins, later currants and citrus with orange and grapefruit. The wood is roasted with dark chocolate, mocha and nuts, later caramel, a bit spicy. Some tannins could be tasted, waxy. With resting, vegetal notes are more intense with tea, eucalyptus. 8,3:The finish is medium long, dry, earthy and tannic, some new, tasty notes join the game, with an intention to round the rum like marzipan, toffee, confectionery and cherry...

Review by Basti

Vůně nabízí tóny karamelu, sušeného ovoce, vanilky a pražených ořechů, doplněné o lehký citrusový nádech. Chuť je komplexní, dřevitá, s náznaky tmavé čokolády, kávy a koření. Závěr je bohatý, dlouhý a vyvážený. --- English Grays New Grove Emotion 1969 is an exceptional rum from Mauritius, showcasing a harmony of fruity and spicy notes with pronounced chocolate and coffee undertones. The finish is rich, long, and well-balanced.

Review by Boletus

Review by Michael Schillheim

Review by Mentalo

#24DaysOfRum2023 - Day 9 Opens with an accessible, fruity profile rich in lovely aromas of blackberry, dried fruits and red rhubarb. The nose is woody and spiced, but everything is masterfully balanced by lighter notes of cappuccino, marzipan and crème fraîche. All in all quite flat, but with constant agitation a more recognisable Mauritian profile appears with more aromatic depth and a wonderful flowery heart. Not exactly what I expected, but also not bad. Clearly very old in the mouth. Despite being bottled at ‘only 47%’ the wood is discernably present. Starts with more dried fruits, before sliding into a creamy/burnt sugar sweetness. Perhaps there’s even a hint of passionfruit. Foremost it’s woody. It’s spicy. It’s rich in malty notes. But unfortunately it’s just ever so slightly too thin for my liking. It’s already quite good, but we’re left to wonder what this would be like at >5% more ABV. The finish is too short to be truly enjoyable. Primarily woody with a bit of sweetness.

RumX Calendar Day 9: Great rum, complex profile that lacks a little power. Great introduction to Mauritius, makes you want more!
Review by Rado Vito
This is very complex rum and I could drink it all day long. Smell is pleasent, fruity with spice, you would expect younger rum. Taste is intense and it have a big range of flavours - spice, fruits, chocolate, wood - every time you drink it, you find something else. Price is also positive and 10% of the rum from 1969 is something special. Buy a bottle, because the next oldest rum this destillary have is from 1991. There won’t be “older” rum anymore.
Review by Andi
Addendum: Tasting No. 2Really exciting and very aromatic rum, dark chocolate, coffee and mocha flavors paired with wood and a hint of menthol in the finish.
Review by Schnubbii
Tolle, typische Grays Nase.
Review by Chrischi78

inspired by @kevin Soerensen tasting note of the same day I realized that I haven’t done my notes. So I grabbed the bottle from my shelf and poured a glass. And Kevin is right with his above average rating. It’s a very good rum, subtle, smooth and very balanced. It matches the expectations of the nose on the palate and has a warm, medium to long finish. Yellow fruits, caramel, fruit bread, vanilla, a lovely rum.
Review by Djehey

#1 ISS: rather shy on the nose, soft and sweet fruity. On the palate, it's much more gourmand, round and delicious! A real bonbon with a spicy undertone that lingers in the finish. A good little rum ❤

Review by Simon Leroux
Far from bad, but not at the level of a world's best rum at all.
Review by Rowald Sweet Empire
Engaging and very interesting nose/taste. Complex. lots of Coffee flavours. Tabacco. Spices (cloves/cinnamon). A mix of 1979 to 2008 vintages. So you've got all those woody aged flavours with a bit of that signature New Grove freshness (Eucalyptus/Agricole style). You need to give it some time, but I find this a beautiful rum. Can't stop smelling my glass.

RumX Adventskalender 09.12.23: Eines vorweg: Der Rum heute gefällt mir ausgesprochen gut. In jedem Fall geiler Stoff!

Alkohol perfekt eingebunden. Ebenfalls sehr fruchtige Noten sowie Vanille.
Review by Lot-NAS

Review by Christian Rudt
