Distilia Long Pond Jamaican Rum (Horses) 1983
Sipped slowly and given air, this 38-year Long Pond opens gentle: ripe mango, pineapple and banana, soft esters, a little marzipan. Then the palate surprises with smoke, roasted meat and dry tobacco, plus allspice heat, all held in check. The finish runs very long. Softer and more elegant than a Hampden funk-bomb, with an earthy, almost peaty edge several tasters flagged.
The community says- Ripe tropical fruit
- Long smoky finish
- Elegant, controlled esters

How does Distilia Long Pond Jamaican Rum (Horses) 1983 taste?
Aggregated from 20 community reviews.
Old Long Pond: ripe fruit, smoke, tobacco Nearly everyone rates it a great old Long Pond: gentle tropical esters up front, a surprising smoky-tobacco palate, endless finish. A couple wondered about odd cask/whisky influence, but most call it superb.

At this price, it should offer something, and it does! From nose to finish, tropical and dried fruits harmonize excellently with each other. The cask is perfectly integrated so that wood is noticeable, but only very subtly. The wood is accompanied by spices, allspice, nuts and a little chocolate; in varying degrees from nose to finish. The sweetness is provided by a pleasant caramel note, which tastes like crème brulee on the palate. Great cinema!

👃 A nose dominated above all by sweet esters magnified by time. The deliciousness of honeycomb, vanilla pastry cream, flambéed and candied pineapple brioche, crystallized honey. Then, aromas escape from a basket of tropical fruits dominated by Victoria pineapple, ripe banana, mango, and papaya. Subtly spicy and vanilla woodiness, hardwood furniture polish, varnish & light solvents, dry tobacco smoke, and dusty furniture. Balance, finesse, and elegance characterize this nose. 😋 Esters, of course, sweet but sufficiently funky. Tropical fruits cut into small cubes, caramelized with butter in a pan. Flavors as creamy as ever, with roasted almond pastries. Mild spices on exotic peppers, a little Espelette pepper, pink peppercorns, dried vanilla, candle wax. Then, the finish becomes herbaceous, almost peaty, with meaty notes, dried and salted meat, very dry tobacco. A complex, evolving palate with a surprising finish. ⛳ Long, warm, comforting, pleasantly drying. Dried pineapple, a hint of candied sugar cane, spices, long tobacco leaves, a touch of saddle leather. 🏆 A very old Jamaican rum, sublime from start to finish. Elegance, great complexity, a subtle blend of controlled sweet esters, candied rather than overripe fruit, delicacies and slightly peaty and meaty notes that add even more depth. It's a shame the price is so high.

#6149 28.12.2025 Last online tasting if the year with the guys. It's been a great year, probably one if the craziest one's ever 🥰 Met many new run friends both online and in person, travelled a lot Germany, Belgium, France and Sweden. Next year should be a bit more tranquil I hope, because I have a ton of samples 🙃 Nose Fresh, medium intense, light wood, fruity, overripe, banana, light marzipan, earthy, light herbs. Palate Oily, wood, fruity, overripe, cinnamon, medium spicy, light marzipan, light nutts, faint tannins. Finish Very long and warm, wood, faint tannins, medium dry, fruity, light citrus, banana. Empty glass Citrus, light chocolate, faint caramel, light nutts, cinnamon.

The rum is relatively shallow for its age. The alcohol is well integrated with a slight sweetness. There is a hint of spiciness at the back. Could be a strange cask with whisky influences. Or the rum is somewhat overblended. The price is abnormal, but understandable given the age.

Tasted after 2 days at Whisky live Paris! A fitting end to this 2025 edition! Quite a discreet nose, needs to be opened up! A good hour at least for it to begin to reveal itself. Rather fine, elegant profile, we find the Jamaican profile with some esters, but quite discreet.

Whow!

The last part of this magic cask , hold back for now , glad this is still available but for how long , last casks and then it s gone , love it . The thin fruit as pear and jasmin flower , very integreted ether , alcohol kicks in but get smashed down bij the layers of fruit and a little bitternes , it needs time to breath then its looking how the bottle gets empty 🥵

The second part of the sister cask that is one of the best long ponds and almost last ever , from the 8 casks , so its very doubtful this ons was at whisky fair , and ratings or about this cask , if you rate the vane as 9.2 and the same cask here as 8.3 i doubt about the tasting, and sure what you taste ? Whisky influence? Very very strange , i will defend this oldest lengedary long pond , there will be one older in the future but thats it , and its fenomenal stuff , tried it more times , hope there will be more tastings of this rum , it s simply a benchmark of a forgotten taste

The vane was world class , this is the second part of this cask and , strange but it needs more time to explore then the vane , but then its even better , what a intense beauty.
Review by Dyckmans Carl
The second part of the vane , not for the non trained drinker , elegant ether , thin glue , the remembering of the insane vane tasting comes back , what a long pond at his best , the afthertast keeps coming back , fruitiness and controlled alcohol level , top 5 rums for me

Lightly smoked, rounded, lightly esthers and tanins starts to be overhelming
