Not your typical aged rum: this Haitian cane-juice bottling swings between honeyed sugarcane and something briny and medicinal — olives in salt water, herbs, a cheesy funk, and a smoky finish. Six years in cask add toasted oak without burying the wild clairin core. One taster nicknamed it "the mezcal of clairins," which sums up the earthy, herbal, sometimes puzzling ride.

Dégusté en bonne compagnie sur Paris. Ce vieux Rocher fait la part belle aux fruits surmuris, aux notes typiques du clairin, un gras issu du sirop très satisfaisant en bouche, et un voile fumé. 100% plaisir, c'est vraiment excellent.

Eine schwierige Nummer. Zum einen zeigt sich eine enorme Bandbreite an Aromen angefangen mit honigsüßem Zuckerrohr hin zu Oliven in Salzlake, Käse, vergorenen Früchten, getoasteter Eiche und medizinischen Rauchnoten. Zum anderen wirkt das Wechselspiel für mich doch ein klein wenig zu konfus, um mich voll zu begeistern. Auf jeden Fall ein sehr spannender Tropfen, aber auch ein etwas anstrengender Genuss.

Su questo vieux le rocher avevo tante aspettative sull’invecchiamento perché partendo dalla distillazione dello sciroppo di canna e con la fermentazione simile ai Grand Arome il potenziale poteva essere alto! Al naso ricorda un mix tra clairin bianco e Hampden dove c’è una nota importante di frutti fermentati! Al palato invece mantiene tutti i sapori del clairin con una bella parte di legno che non sovrasta il timbro originale di le rocher! Un rum davvero ben fatto!

On the nose: That typical medicinal, herbal note you recognice as a Haitian canejuice rum. Also dried fruits, honey. Fresh canejuice notes. Taste: Olives with medicinal and herbal notes upfront. Sweet sugarcane notes come after that. Overripe notes. Then thereis allspice notes in there. Finish: Herbal notes and roasted mouthfeel upfront. Sugarcane notes. Finishes dry. Good rum, but not a "daily driver" for me. I have to visit this rum another time.

Kein Favorit für mich, aber man muss ihm lassen, dass die Balance zwischen Spiritcharakter und Fasseinfluss hier gut getroffen wurde. Die etwas käsige bzw. Joghurtnote des ungereiften Le Rocher finde ich auch hier. Weird aber ganz spannend, wenngleich mir der neuere Vieux Vaval im direkten Vergleich besser gefällt.

Direktvergleich mit RX23886 Vaval. An der Nase nicht so frisch, aber trotzdem intensiv. Am Gaumen dann deutlich mehr Körper, vor allem aber kommt da etwas pfeffriges oder annähernd rauchiges dazu (Rauchsalz ??). Interessant. Jedenfalls auch ein toller Clairin.

Nach längerer Zeit im Glas entwickelt er im Geschmack eine rauchige Whiskynote. Nach kurzer Zeit im Glas, hatte erst die süße Honignote dominiert. Hätte er nicht diesen Switch gemacht, hätte er wohl besser abgeschnitten.

I expected something totally different and was pleasantly suprised. This is one of the best Haitis I have tasted. Never heard of Blanton before but it obviously made a good work here. The nose corresponds quite well with the palate, both rich in overripe fruits, banana, pineapple, sweet-soury olives, honey, light medicinal, vegetal and herbal notes, sweet spices, I even get hints of white wine. Bitter medicinal aftertaste.

31-07-2025 - Rate 7.8 After tasting quit a few Haiti rums and beige fund of Vieux Sajous. I had high expectations for this rum. They were not all fulfilled. Notes of herbal vegetable garden, tropical fruit and honey. Palate is herbal, olive and fruit. Short finish with mango, olive and sugar. Have an extra sample which I will save a while and then try again in some time.

Hodně nečekané, podobné Haiti jsem ještě neměl. Už medicinální tóny ve vůni naznačují, že se tady nepojede podle standardní šablony, přidávají se bylinky a koření. V chuti zajímavá kombinace oliv a třešní, pečený dojezd.
