DDL El Dorado High Ester Blend PM/DHE 2014
Kiwi, green apple and papaya sit on top of the Port Mourant's pencil-shavings wood, burnt sugar and leather. Most tasters find the "high ester" label a bit misleading — it's more a fruity, spicy Demerara blend than a Jamaican funk bomb. The 51.7% sits well, and a few drops of water pulls out glue and rum-raisin. Several call it better than the LBI/DHE.

This one is a bit puzzling for me… I expected this to be my favorite out of the DHE blends I was able to to taste, but can’t quite confirm that at the first try. On the plus side: this one shows the best balance. Tropical PM and DHE work very well together forming a homogeneous picture. On the downside, this isn’t really exciting (compared to the LBI or continental blends) and I think I would actually prefer a straight tropical PM over this.

From memory, I like it a bit more than the other Eldorado blend. I also find the drinking strength of 51.7% quite appropriate and more than enough here. I was really positively surprised.

Great special nose, zesty funky fruitiness in a chocolate nougat ice cream sundae 🤣. A few tropical fruits on top. Very spicy and complex... Alcohol very well integrated. I like it a lot.

Tasting RX22976 d. 22.07.26 El Dorado PM/DHE Nose: Complex, pencil shavings. Overripe papaya and prunes. Caramel, some chocolate, light nougat, light anise, spiced cask. Natural balanced sweetness. Leather and toasted notes. PM DNA. Palet: Balanced and complex. Honey, burnt sugar and caramel. Overripe prunes and mirabelle, pencil shavings and spices like anise, light nutmeg. Burnt lemon peel, dried fruits like dates, raisins and apricot. Residual tast, honey, overripe prunes and cherry, burnt sugar, floral, spicy light red pepper, bitter dark chocolate. Light sour and natural sweetness. Pencil shavings, light cask notes, long balanced residual taste. Glass: burnt caramel, light oak cask. Tasting “In the bed”

I was more excited about the LBI/DHE than this PM/DHE. With the LBI, I really liked the LBI part and then wondered why they had to "ruin" it with the DHE. It didn’t quite fit. Here, on the other hand, the combination works. The doubleretort pot still combo works well and the DHE profile actually complements the PM. Better than the SBS release, by the way, where the combo was already tried. I like it a lot. And then I’d rather have the LBI bottled on its own… without blend and finish.

Very pleasant blend, although the term High Ester Blend might mislead some. You can clearly identify the PM markers and taste them very nicely; alongside that, there's a constant medicinal note which isn't really bothersome. I can only agree with Zabo that the just over 50% ABV is really a nice drinking strength that even beginners can handle well.

This El Dorado High Ester Blend is something really brilliant! I really like the nose exceptionally well! The esters push the already great fruitiness even further. I get caramel, plum, papaya, licorice, leather, and other fruits. Then come burnt sugar, dried fruits, cherry, cask notes, roasted aromas, and anise. On the palate, sweet fruits, burnt sugar, plums in honey, cola, papaya, caramel, and cherry come forward. Pencils, nutmeg, and cask notes provide a spicy woodiness. The 51% ABV is not overpowering, making this a great drinking experience. The medium-long finish is marked by nuts, sweet fruits, vanilla, plum, spicy licorice, caramel, cherry, dark chocolate, and tea. This PM/DHE is really fun, and maybe I'll get a whole bottle. Many thanks to @Zabo for this brilliant sample 😃

This is a much better rum than the LBI/DHE edition! Green apple, kiwi, 😋 star fruit, apricot, almonds, cardamom, and Earl Grey tea. The finish is long and delicious.

#7236 30.08.2026 Tasted at the German Rum Festival 2026. Very nice El Dorado high ester with an OK price tag. Quick notes while tasting. Pencil shavings, woody, roated, caramel, fruits, medicinal, chocolate, spice, licorice, leather, natural sweetness.

To me the nose is light medium with burnt sugar and leather, honestly my least favorite part of this rum. Upon tasting though, this rum really picks up with greatly integrated flavors of that burnt sugar but with vanilla, wood notes, and fruit. The finish is long with vanilla and bitter dark chocolate.

You can recognize the Port Mourant share, but at the same time, this rum has a very caramel and fruity side (green apple, kiwi?!). That harmonizes really well and makes the rum complex. Also pleasant, exciting, and tasty on the palate. This blend stands out because it has facets you haven't seen from El Dorado before. The only downside is the finish could be longer. Strong experiment, price is reasonable too. Hopefully, there will be more of this!

On the nose: Woody, roasted, light pencil shaving notes and leather . Light burnt sugar note. Light dried fruit and spice notes in the background. Dry. Taste: Lovely plum notes, light burnt sugar notes and pencil shaving notes. Spices like nutmeg. I like how this just builds to a nice flavour palate. For this palate, the intensity and abv is on a good level. Finish: Spices, plums and nice tea note that dries the finish. Light chocolate notes. Nice complexity in the finish. Long finish. On the nose this run didn't quite offer me much, but i really liked the tasting notes, especially the plum notes and very nice finish.

Superb extension of the previous LBI/DHE 2012 blend, although I personally preferred the predecessor overall. However, there is definitely more "high ester" here and, accordingly, more complexity and aroma density! Here, pencil shavings, fully ripe papaya, and tart, sweet, furry kiwi meet licorice, burnt sugar, cola syrup, molasses, and slightly medicinal notes. The alcohol is perfectly integrated, highly complex, and absolutely exciting. I'm excited to see what else El Dorado comes out with in the future! :)

Tasting at "Basecamp" on 06.08.2026 Samples from Rum Depot. 👌 Nose on an adventure👃: I sense dried fruits like raisins, dried apricot. There's caramel and burnt sugar. There's also lots of licorice, nutmeg, and a smoky aroma hiding in there. The sweetness is definitely present in the form of berries! Tongue on an adventure 🥃: I taste milk chocolate, burnt sugar, nutmeg, licorice. There's also plenty of sweet dark berries. I especially taste dark ripe blackberries and blueberries! The finish of the story💫: a super tasting experience with a lovely aftertaste of nuts, dark chocolate, and caramel! Perfect balance between the many layers!

El Dorado rare collection SWR vs VSG vs PM DHE this evening, thanks to Tim for the samples! Wow, much, much better than the LBI DHE, no comparison. The LBI was a not so subtle blend, it felt like the column distillate was there to tame the DHE. Here, the harmony works so well, I'm impressed, good work El Dorado! The PM is definitely there, but there is also plum, and a clear fruity aspect, but it never gets ester-y.

In der Nase Port Mourant mit Funk! Fruchtige Rum Rosinen. Am Gaumen geht es dann genauso weiter. Richtig schöner und leckerer Blend, auch wenn ihm eingangs vielleicht etwas die Tiefe fehlt. Mit etwas Wasser öffnet er sich noch mehr. Ich finde Klebstoff und noch mehr Frucht, nicht ganz trockene Früchte, Richtung Datteln oder Rumrosinen vielleicht. Dieser Rum profitiert sehr von etwas Zeit im Glas oder ein paar Tropfen Wasser. Sehr gelungene Abfüllung!

It’s an enjoyable one. The nose brings kiwi and caramel with some leather. The mouth is complex with papaya and earthy sweetness. The finish is spicy and nutty with an awakening and pleasant finish. The woody elements of the PM really pop here, I wouldn’t say it’s truly a high ester rum but it’s a top and easy drinking DDL! Great sipper.

I was curious about the PM/DHE High Ester and was totally positively surprised. I smell lots of fruit and sweetness. On the palate, it continues with sugar, vanilla, and also fruit. I hadn't experienced this from El Dorado before and really like it. The alcohol is also well integrated. Only the finish could be longer. Nice rum!

In der Nase ist der Name Programm, könnte auch ein länger gereifter Jamaikaner sein. Geschmacklich weicht er dann aber doch etwas ab. Recht “süß”, dezente Fruchtnote. Alkohol ist gut eingebunden, mehr als die 51,7 hätte ich hier wohl auch nicht gebraucht.

Er erfüllt vielleicht nicht ganz die Erwartungen an einen High-Ester-Rum, ist aber per se ein sehr gelungener Rum. Zu Beginn riecht man vor allem Zitrus- und Karamell-Noten. Putzmittel kommt dazu - Glasreiniger. Diese Note verschwindet aber wieder und macht Platz für Vanille, Rumrosinen und Mallaga-Eis. Später kommen Lemon-Tarte und eine Klebstoff-Note hinzu, noch später Marmorkuchen und Shortbread. Der Geschmack wird zu Beginn dominiert von Tabak - nicht angezündeter Zigarre - und Karamell sowie Zitrone und Bitterorange. Englische Bitterorangen -Marmelade kommt dazu, dann dunkles Karamell und Toffee. Irgendwann setzt sich karamellisierter Kaiserschmarren mit Rumrosinen durch, der begleitet wird von dunklem Karamell. Diese Kombination bleibt dann bis zum Schluss im Vordergrund. Der Alkohol ist die gesamte Zeit hervorragend eingebunden. Der Abgang ist zu Beginn mittel, wird immer länger bis er zum Schluss richtig lange ist. Er schmeckt nach Bitterorangen, Leder, angebranntem Karamell und Holz. Insgesamt ein sehr gelungener El Dorado zu einem sehr selbstbewussten Preis.
