Elixir Distillers of London Caroni The Whisky Trail Single Traditional Column (Paradise for Shinanoya) 1997

Sip this slow and neat — at 59.5% it comes in hot, and a rest in the glass is what wakes it up. The classic Caroni tar and rubber are here, but dialed down and wrapped in wood, vanilla, caramel and roasted cocoa. Several tasters call it a "lighter" Caroni, less dirty than the 97s they love most — enjoyable, just not the vintage's peak.

Lighter, woody Caroni with tar in the finish The few who tried it land in a similar place: a decent, approachable Caroni that reads a touch alcoholic and light on complexity — good for understanding the "dirty" style, not the top of the vintage.

On to the second Caroni of the day. On the nose: It has some familiar notes like tar, but quite woody and alcoholic. Spices. Vanilla. Taste: Quite tar and alcoholic upfront. Then the rum opens up to a creamy mouthfeel with darker flavours like cocoa, coffee notes. Finish: Quite dry finish. Woody, roasted and leather notes. From my experience this rum doesn't offer the typical notes associated with Caroni rums. It should be more complex, more balanced and finish could be better to receive better score, but i liked it and its not a bad rum at all

Notes from the cask with some sweet vanilla and lots of wood on the nose. There is some Caroni dirt but also a note of rotten vegetables, which is rather unique. On the palate it can’t quite compete with the top of the 97 vintage. Lots of wood, vanilla and spices are dominating. While those are good ingredients, the profile feels a bit too alcoholic and lacks complexity for a higher rating. Still overall enjoyable, just not quite top notch.

The nose is more Guyanese and alcoholic. The taste is initially dominated by herbs, which quickly combine with a clear caramel note (probably from the cask). Unfortunately, the beloved tar notes only emerge in the finish, where they linger discreetly but for a long time. In my opinion, the rum should have been bottled earlier.

Avg Rating 8.8/10 620 Rums

No closed distillery is chased harder than Caroni. The Trinidad distillery shut down around 2002 and not a drop has been made since, but its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like rum became a collector obsession, carried to the world by Velier. Every bottle now comes from a finite, shrinking stock, which is exactly why the prices keep climbing.
