Rest & Be Thankful Hampden Hampden for Wu Dram Clan & Kirsch Whisky LROK 2016

Marzipan, oak and vanilla lead here, with far less of the funk you'd expect from Hampden — this is a low-ester LROK, so the tropical fruit stays quiet. Several tasters found it a touch sour and astringent, with 65% heat that runs hot and needs a few drops of water. Others enjoyed the wood-spice-confectionery balance. A young, wild, oak-forward Jamaican, not an ester bomb.

Here I can go along with Serge, who rated the youngster very highly. He was also one of my favorites in the lineup and shows very well that young low ester Hampden can also work very well.

8,3:On the nose, bourbon notes and mild esters, some solvents are the first thing we notice, green fruits like pear, floral and grassy notes, vanilla, all balanced. On aeration, unripe banana is out, citrus, herbaceous and vegetal tones with an olive, roasted wood with pastry, nuts, spicy. 7,9:On the palate, the attack is sweet/salty, very spicy, some chilli is there, woody tones, all a bit wild. The balancing act are tropical fruits like banana, esters and roasted wood notes like caramel and nuts. After resting the rum, very tasty fruits are stronger with mango, green fruits and some apricots, milk chocolate. 8,2:The finish is round with dry and spicy, salty wood, roasted with crunchy bread, caramel, a bit smoky, some hay and especially apricots..

Not a bad rum, but relatively sour for a Hampden, astringent, marzipan. I clearly miss the fruity notes.

To be honest, this rum doesn't really blow me away. I notice a certain mustiness on the nose, which I find disturbing. I find the taste relatively sharp, as the alcohol is not really well integrated. How WDC and Kirsch were able to choose this remains a mystery to me.
