Master of Malt South Pacific Fijian Rum 2009

Sipped neat, this drinks surprisingly easy for 61% — little afterburn, plenty of Fijian funk. Expect juicy pineapple and tropical fruit up front, then creamy toffee, crème brûlée and butter, with rubber, dark chocolate and coffee on the drier finish. One taster called it "light, floral and funky," and most agree it punches well above its age.

The community says
  • Juicy pineapple funk
  • Creamy toffee body
  • Odd smoky aftertaste

Funky, fruity Fiji that hides its 61% Most tasters love this one: fruity, funky and estery with a creamy toffee middle and a dry chocolate finish. A couple found the smoky-peppery aftertaste odd, but value is the big theme.

Tasted against the Plantation Fiji ‘under the sea’ 2009. The MoM bottling is a great rum for a fantastic price. Fruity, funky nose leads into a rich, creamy toffee, butter taste. It is easily superior to the Plantation Fiji with a great punchiness, complexity and interesting flavours - wow the butteriness. The plantation is still good but smoothed out and more generic.

Very complex and industrial but sweet. Like a continental aged PM with some funk. Now tasting at 48%: still very powerful. 99% dark chocolate on nose and especially dry chocolate roasted finish. Rubber and coffee. Really quite a beast, but somehow not 8.5+ due to ferocity. Amazing value. Also rumour that Fiji casks are disappearing so glad to have it.

Excellent rum. Lovely bits of chocolate, crème brûlée, butter, burnt sugar and vegetal notes. 61% very well rounded with a medium finish with little burn for that ABV. Lovely funk to this too. Value for money, easy drinking and a cracking bottle.

14-02-2025 Decent Fiji rum. Had expected some more fruit and power. Something in the aftertaste that I can’t put a word to, but did not like it. Perhaps a mix of smoke and pepper. One for the books and not necessarily a retaste.

Sweet tropical fruits and vanilla pudding on the nose. Sweet caramelized/honey overripe fruits and vanilla pudding on the palate.

Lots of sweet grassy sugarcane flavours, very estery with the intensity tamed by toffeeish notes from the cask, juicy pineapple, some herbaceous notes, slight aniseed, a feeling of creaminess. This is an absolute banger of a rum, and for £49.99 it’s a steal!

It’s not trying to be extreme, but it’s definitely has its moments and is far from boring. Master of Malt South Pacific Distillery Aged 13 Years is a solid, well‑aged and confidently bottled independent rum that rewards time and attention.
