Foursquare ECS XXVII Equidem 2010
First thing people notice is the color — startlingly dark for a Foursquare, almost Oloroso-like. That comes from a Black Muscat cask finish over the usual bourbon-aged base, and it layers dark berries, plum jam and cassis over the classic caramel-vanilla-cocoa DNA. Full, oily body, a peppery ginger kick, and a long dry-tannic finish. The 61% shows some bite young, so a few drops of water help.

Fantastic and complex rum. Needs time to open up and improved by adding a bit of water to take some bite away. The nose is rich, with jam, palm and dark fruits and dark chocolate. On the palate, there is leather dried fruits, chocolate and caramel. The finish continues the berries, and chocolate with some spice.

I was very excited about this rum after all the positive reviews. The dark color is already very impressive. On the nose I get plum jam, chocolate or rather dusty cocoa powder, in the background also slightly sour (papaya, bitter orange...), blackcurrants. On the palate, the high ABV pushes quite hard, but not yet to the point of being biting. Notes of leather, cherry wood, barrel (tannins), dark chocolate. The experiment with the Black Muscat cask was a real success! For me, it's on a par with the Pleni, Raconteur and Absolutio (all of which I had at 88 points)

First of all, thanks to Jörg for the sample. The finish makes it stand out from the crowd, but for me it's still a profile that I wouldn't need a bottle of. But I've never really "understood" Foursquare, so it's quite possible that it's just me.

What a color! The Equidem is very dark in the glass and literally screams chocolate, dried fruit, leather, plums and blackberries. And that's exactly what it delivers. Oily and pleasantly warm on the palate, with more cocoa, chocolate and wood on the long finish. This Foursquare was already very hyped before its release in Germany. And rightly so!

8,7:On the nose, spiciness with medicinal notes, is the first impression we get, toasted coconut, roasted wood with nuts, leather, caramel and cocoa and dried fruits like apricots, raisins. Die Nase ist sehr einladend und relativ süß. Schokolade, getr. Früchte, Karamell, Vanille, Kokosnuss und diverse Gewürze. Gefällt mir sehr gut. Im Mund dann sehr ölig/cremig, jede Menge Gewürze, die ich nicht alle zuordnen kann, vielleicht sogar Kardamom und Muskat. Dazu Schokolade und holzige Noten. In Summe ein sehr guter und süffiger Foursquare, ohne das Rad jedoch neu erfunden zu haben. Edit: Erstbewertung bestätigt. Sehr leckerer Foursquare, aber dennoch knapp hinter dem Absolutio und dem Plenip. Dafür deutlich besseres PLV 👍

Wow, wow. Insanely complex, powerful Foursquare. The finish in the Black Muscat barrel fits like a glove on the Foursquare eye. This combination is really amazing. I'm not really a sweet person, but the sweetness of a summer jam is just perfect here. This creamy complexity is second to none. For me, this is the best Foursquare I've had in a glass so far, a touch ahead of the Absolutio. Alcohol perfectly integrated. Stands out from the standard Foursquare mash. Doesn't have to hide behind the Velier bottlings.

It is very dark ... Nose dark dried fruits, blackberries, pepper, chocolate, some clove and baking spice. Pleasant sweetness on the palate... Alcohol slightly biting and sharp-edged on the tongue (should have given it more time) Dried fruits also here clearly with chocolate some coconut ... something peppery hot comes again and again with but does not interfere at all but makes it then but something special . I don't see a 90+ here, it's just not different enough for that, at least for me.

Alter Bourbon-Foursquare trifft dunklen Rotwein. Zusammen mit Velier Absolutio verkostet und es gibt viele Gemeinsamkeiten. Vielseitig fruchtig (z.B. typisch Orange, Banane, Kokos), Gewürze, Karamell a la Foursquare, aber dann viele dunkle Früchte und Kakao. Sehr gut, einer der besten ECS.

This is not a high value rum in the sense that it is an obvious buy or an absolute must-have, but if you have the money to buy it, you are 100% getting value for money. In terms of the rum, this rum is fantastic. Equidem is a great example of taking the Foursquare DNA that we all know and love and honing in on all the rich, dark and savory notes. After adding a few drops of water it really opens up, doesn't quite evolve into a completely different rum, but it feels much more cohesive overall. 🤩🤩

Tasted this unique rum during Sweden Rumfest 2025. It’s a blend of rum distilled in a copper double retort pot still and a twin column still. This bottling from Foursquare is also a blend of two rums where one of them partly was aged in Black Muscat casks which is the first time for Foursquare. The nose is intense, complex, juicy, fruity, sweet and spicy with aromas of raisin, nectarine, plum, lemon, clementine and with a hint of marzipan, ginger and turmeric. At the palate it’s complex, full bodied, creamy, smooth, fruity and sweet with flavors of caramel, jam, peaches and plums. The finish is rather long, bitter and spicy with flavors of black tea and ginger.

This bottling has the hype quite rightly with the quite extraordinary Black Muscat Cask Finish! It has strong parallels to the Velier Foursquare Absolutio (comparison to come) but seems almost better balanced and has an incredibly beautiful mouthfeel. Very creamy, heavy and simply a great viscosity. Aromatically, port and red wine notes meet dark chocolate, caramel, some typical coconut and banana, but also rather atypical notes of cassis, blackberry and plums, which are complemented very pleasantly in the finish by a slightly spicy ginger kick (ginger sticks dipped in dark chocolate). Really great bottling and highly recommended!🇧🇧👏🏼 Update: in a direct comparison with Absolutio, it comes out on top. Significantly sweeter, more caramelly and the alcohol is not quite as well integrated in direct comparison. But that's complaining at a high level!

I've been looking forward to this release for a long time. One of the darkest Foursquare in the glass that I have tasted so far. On the nose, I find leather or old leather armchairs, dark chocolate and dried fruit, plus some spices such as clove. Incredibly intense on the palate. Sweetness at first, then a jammy fruitiness, followed by dark chocolate and some leather. However, the alcohol is already pushing quite a bit out of the freshly opened bottle. Like almost all Foursquare ECS releases, the Equidem also benefits greatly from a little (1-2 tsp water to 2 cl) water, which opens it up and takes away the sharpness. Then it's just a heavenly marmalade, the fruitiness comes to the fore and the darker aromas recede somewhat. The finish is medium-long with a heavy sweetness and jam. A really nice release and for me in direct comparison on the same high level as the Absolutio, whereby the Absolutio for me has more of a port fruitiness with more dried fruit and the Equidem more of a velvety, jammy fruitiness in line with its maturation.

Wow, finally another ECS Foursquare that stands out from the others, which are usually very high quality. The alcohol is more than super integrated. I'm thrilled. Of course, I'll still have to try how it fares against the Absolutio. That's why one or two points may change in the rating.

#5644 08.09.2025 Enjoying some samples after an extended workday helping a colleague. Nose Fresh, round, wood, vanilla, light leather spice, cherry, light caramel, light earthy. Palate Oily, wood, light tannins, roasted, spice, light cherry, light citrus, banana, light chocolate, light smoke, faint cinnamon. Finish Long, wood, light tannins, faint smoke, light coconut, light chocolate, light berries, spice. Empty glass Vanilla, chocolate, banana, light coconut, light berries. The colour of this rum surprised me a lot because it's extremely dark compared to the other releases.

Wow, this ECS really stands out in this iconic collection from Richard Seale's distillery. Among the best I've ever tasted. All the typical and classic FS markers are present on the nose and palate; various declensions of caramel (cream, candy, fudge), honeyed character, brown sugar, sore throat syrup, alcohol that kicks just right (lively nose and warm palate), woody presence (cask, vanilla, dark chocolate, spices). Dried coconut, of course, but also magnificent dried fruits (currants, dates, plums, figs) and dehydrated dark berries (blackcurrant, elderberry), all of which come from the black muscat cask. 💡Tasted again and I affirm that this Equidem is among the very good RQPs of the moment at the release price (~99🍒). On a par with some of Velier's Foursquare selections from his black bottle collaboration.

Insanely deep, beautiful color. Chocolate, coffee, spices. The Fourquare coconut is recognizable, but in the background. Tobacco, spice. Not very complex, but well melted. Perfection in the integration of the alcohol. In the mouth, peppery spiciness, wood, dried fruit, caramel and spice. Full-bodied, warm and very strong. Lots of milk chocolate. Long, spicy finish. The Equidem - a simple name by Foursquare standards - certainly ranks at the top end of Seale's oeuvre. Not quite typical, the profile looks strongly towards 🇬🇾. Agree with Michael, certainly a top companion to a cigar. 🙏 for this beautiful sample!

The nose points towards Foursquare or Belize with a very round, pleasing impression, I would say. Palate: au-yes, very round, alcohol 55-60%, lots of dried fruits, bourbon, I can imagine tasting a port or sweet wine finish Finish: medium long finish with bourbon and roasted notes I like it very much, my guess is Barbados/Foursquare. 👃🏼Beaucoup de fruits noirs et rouges, quelque chose qui se rapproche d'un vin cuit. Du raisin mûr, un côté Porto. Le tout est très complexe et équilibré. De la prune, un peu de cassis, qui lui apporte une astringence perceptible à l'odeur. On a aussi des traces d'orange amère, au milieu des épices légères. Le boisé des 14 ans passés en fût est bien là, mais délicat. 👅 Elle est chaude mais bien intégrée malgré le taux d'alcool le plus élevé de toutes les bouteilles. Beaucoup d' épices et il serait compliqué de toutes les nommer. La vanille se mêle à l'orange amère, et il possède un côté très tanique qui laisse une grosse opulence sur la langue et le palais. C'est ample, huileux, sec. La rondeur est apportée avec cette prune et ce vin cuit, plus discret que dans le nez, et elle est compensée par l'amertume du chocolat noir. 🎆 La finale est très longue, âpre, avec beaucoup de tanins.

A real pleasure from start to finish. This Foursquare reveals a remarkable concentration of aromas, with power that's present but always under control. Very fat and oily, it expresses itself through a purée of ripe fruit, dominated by plum and accompanied by a touch of chocolate. A mixture of wood and caramel enrich the whole. The finish prolongs the tasting experience, with a long-lasting sweetness that coats the palate (+ a slight freshness). An experience I simply adored.

The first thing I notice on the nose is the typical Foursquare aroma... a little later, dark, heavy sweet wine joins in. This accompanies you to the finish. There is also some wood, coconut and caramel on the palate. A good Foursquare.

And here we have another FS ECS again and I must say it is very successful, I like the ex muscat very much. On the nose I smell raisins, overripe plums, a touch of sour tangerines and marzipan. The taste is nice and smooth to creamy, caramel dominates along with plum and peach jam. A ginger spiciness comes in on the finish which ends with a bitter tail reminiscent of black tea (the spiciness remains). Richard Seale, I am again very pleased.

A powerful rum with a strong character, intense roasted aromas, dark chocolate and a fine spiciness. Notes of dried fruit, leather and a hint of tobacco unfold on the palate, accompanied by a pleasant bitterness. The alcohol is well integrated and gives the rum a pleasant warmth. Very nice Foursquare. Even if I place it below Pleni or Absolutio, it has resources. Its finish gives it a real plus. We find the usual markers of the distillery, coconut, caramel, chocolate, spices, and woodiness... to which we add notes of blackcurrant, a hint of citrus, and a little pepper. Nice juice in any case 💪💪

There were times when no Foursquare would have scored over 80 points with me. Those days are over and this rum is really beautiful. The nose is intensely fruity - very dry and ripe. The plum is indeed prominent. In the mouth, the fruit becomes more berry. In the mouth, I have an irritating sticky note, which turns this very harmonious rum into a more interesting rum. The finish is a little disappointing, but without any off-flavors. Very good Foursquare.

Finally I have the much-praised Equidem in a jar. And I have to say. It doesn't disappoint at all, but offers a consistently broad aroma spectrum that goes beyond the standard Foursquare notes. Lots of fruit that also has some sweetness, the finish is a little drier and the tannins come out clearly.

Das erste Sample in diesem Urlaub, lange habe ich mich zurückhalten müssen und war entsprechend gespannt! Sehr dunkel im Glas, das beeindruckend kräftige Aroma verbreitet sich und Sitznachbarn haben auch was davon - sehr nett. Auf der Zunge dann die erwartbaren Aromen von dunkler Schokolade, massive Gewürzeinschläge aus verschiedenen Richtungen, dunkle Früchte wie getrocknete Kirschen. Allerdings kommt auch eine leichte Schärfe an den Zungenrändern durch den hohen ABV. Das mag auch durch die relativ hohe Temperatur mit 33°C hier begünstigt worden sein, ich muss ihn definitiv noch mal bei 20-23°C testen.

On the nose: Surprisinly fruity. I get mainly dried fruits and vanilla. Hints of dark chocolate, spices like pepper and leather. Round and balanced. Taste: I like the body and mouthfeel on this one. The abv level is intense but nicely present and its has peppery feel to it. Good amount of sweetness. Mainly Dark chocolate and dried fruits. Woody and leather. Complex. Finish: Medium-long finish. Quite rich and complex finish. Wood, spices and fruits. Bitterness on the very end. In overall im impressed. Black moscat as a cask choice is new to me, but i believe its good choice on this one. I really liked the mouthfeel on this one, good abv and touch of pepper. Finish was really good too. So far my favorite from Foursquare ECS series

Un très bon rhum fort et complexe. C'est un rhum qu'il faut laisser reposer un peu avant de déguster. Au nez on retrouve bien les odeurs boisé du fût. En bouche les saveurs de chocolat, de fruits noirs et de vanille s'y ajoutent. Les 60° sont bien présents et je trouve qu'il souffre un peu de la hype qu'il a eu à sa sortie. Ce n'est clairement pas un rhum pour les débutants.

👃🏼 = lively aromas of wood, red and black fruits, coconut, banana, vanilla, a little caramel. 👄 = the strength of this alcohol is immediately expressed on the palate with orange, a little creaminess and a certain lightness, perhaps due to the muscat, to finish on a long, peppery finish. Equidem's double maturation produces a fine quality rum that can be enjoyed slowly with aeration 👏

Lots of chocolate and red fruits/berries. The black muscat cask fits perfectly with the Foursquare character and also provides numerous spices. The alcohol is superbly integrated. For me, it's really well done and therefore one of the best Foursquares.

Compared to the Rare Cane 2005 Barbados this evening. It is a classic Foursquare and it slightly won. Palate is caramel, cherry and perhaps dark chocolate. Finish is dry, slight oak, honey and MUCH longer warming if you live in a cold environment. Rare Cane won the finish despite my enjoyment of a long warm finish typically. Aloha

Klasse Farbe, wie ein schöner Oloroso. Die Nase ist einfach lecker. Rund, weich, Schoko, Banane, dahinter eine gewisse süsse Fruchtigkeit - einfach gut. Der Gaumen spiegelt die Nase wieder, keine Überraschungen. Im Abgang vor allem die dunklen leicht Holz berührten Noten. Ein Rum zum langsam geniessen. Macht Spass. Werde ich das nächste Mal am offenen Kamin probieren, wenn etwas Feuerrauch in der Luft ist.

An exciting Foursquare with a nice heavy complexity. The barrel influence is clear, but blends in nicely. One of the better ECS on the nose. A similar picture on the palate, with some spiciness. All dark and creamy. Very pleasing but there is also a lot to discover. This is fun.

Typical Foursquare that has quite a high quality in the overall package. Very balanced with a nice natural sweetness. Lots of vanilla with burnt sugar. However, as is so often the case with Foursquare, I miss the rough edges here.

First spin out the day I received the bottle. Immediately impressed. Unique complexity and great depth, with bitter notes and soft perfectly integrated classic Foursquare notes. Really love it already and think it will become a classic. The nose is classic foursquare, just a great cacophony of vanilla, barrel and caramel. The mouth is incredible complex, stewed fruit, bitter toffee, cherry, demurs sugar, wow it just keeps coming. The finish is long, warming and perfectly integrated. Really very impressive and a true notch above all recent ECS releases I have tried
