Planteray Mister Fogg Navy Rum (No. 1) 2024
Anyone chasing an affordable navy-style bottle for tastings or cocktails will find plenty here. Expect dried fruit, molasses, burnt caramel and a heavy dose of Christmas spice — cinnamon and clove run the show. At 55.7% the alcohol shows on the tongue. Several tasters flag added sugar and a slightly artificial edge, and more than a few say it drinks more spiced than truly navy.

Sweet, spice-forward navy blend for mixing Well-priced and easy to like at first, with dried fruit and Christmas spice. Many feel the sweetness and heavy cinnamon push it toward a spiced rum rather than a real navy.

Impressive navy-style rum from Planteray! Interestingly, from the taste and aroma, I would have guessed that the biggest portion of the blend is DDL. However, according to official information, the dominant component is WIRD. On the nose, woody notes dominate, accompanied by hints of dark dried fruit, banana peel and burnt caramel, which give it a robust, slightly roasted profile. The palate reveals an interesting mix of molasses, dried fruit, and wood, balanced with subtle black pepper and a faint touch of citrus. The finish is medium-long, carrying forward notes of woody oak, molasses, and a pleasant hint of honey, intertwined with lingering orange peel and banana. This rum is well-rounded yet still retains that bold navy strength. A solid 8.5/10 for me!

Sweetish, medicinal and quite boring. Very pleasant, very slight bitterness. Quite cinnamony

I think it's important to remember with this rum that the primary goal here was not to create a good rum, but to faithfully replicate rum as it was once made. And the story is compelling. And the rum itself is certainly not bad!

Edit: after standing a little in the open bottle of Split, I think it has degraded quite a bit. The artificial notes are now more apparent. Corrected downwards. Pure it is surprisingly better than expected. I thought I wouldn't like it at all. It's nothing special, but you can use it as a cheap rum in a Lumumba, I think it's well suited for that. The dosage doesn't dominate that much either.

Navy rum that is really fun. Only the dosage spoils the great story somewhat.

@BCB Berlin: Basically not a bad rum, but somehow I miss the balance here. Acidity, wood, sweetness, fruit and tannins come together here without really coming together. The 5g dosage is also absolutely unnecessary for such a product in my opinion. I'll have to take another look at it...

Krass was plantation da wieder gemacht hat. Unschlagbares Preis Leistungsverhältnis. Viel jamaikaeinfluss. Schöne tropische Früchte mit ein paar Ester. Aufgrund des Preis Leistungsverhältnis sollte man den auf jeden Fall mal probieren.

I found the background to Mr. Fogg very interesting and moving. That's why I was already looking forward to this rum. On the nose, it is reminiscent of apple strudel, stewed plums and winter spices (gingerbread). Similar on the palate. A pleasant entry-level sipper, but for me it doesn't really have much in common with a (good) navy rum.

Úžasná vůně. Vůně nabízí tóny karamelu, sušeného ovoce, třešní a dřeva s jemnou karamelizovanou sladkostí. Chuť je bohatá na tropické ovoce, citrusy a ananas, doplněná sladkým medovým nádechem a jemnými stopami červeného vína. Závěr je plný, ovocný a harmonicky sladký. --- English The aroma presents notes of caramel, dried fruits, cherries, and wood, with a subtle caramelized sweetness. The palate is rich with tropical fruits, citrus, and pineapple, enhanced by a honeyed sweetness and hints of red wine. The finish is full-bodied, fruity, and harmoniously sweet.

OK, after the first tasting I deliberately didn't create a rating. I was still too busy brushing my teeth. After a week, I tried it again. Today it's only bad, the first time it was still disgusting. Too sweet, too Christmassy and spicy, more "rum-based spirit" than rum. Luckily, I got the sample before I fell for the bottle.

Tasted at GRF2025 Although its dosed, very good price quality balance. I have to admit, now that Planteray is more transparent on the content of their rums (leaving the discussion if it's forced or not) I do appreciate the brand a lot more.

I've been looking for an affordable (in the sense of around 50 euros) and good navy rum for my tasting for a long time. This one actually comes pretty close to that. On the palate I have dried fruit, black pepper and hints of red wine. The alcohol is not perfectly integrated and is clearly noticeable on the tongue. I'm still pleasantly surprised.

🥃 Plantation Mister Fogg Navy Rum 2024: A disappointment due to a disturbingly artificial note. Given the hype of the last two years, I expected more. But to taste again in another context ...

Not a typical navy profile. Relatively mild, somewhat sweet, especially cinnamon and Christmas spices. Relatively alcoholic on the finish. I don't quite understand the bottling. A good blend, but in my eyes it has absolutely nothing to do with a navy rum.

Boy was I looking forward to this! Navy-Blend recreation from a mighty (too mighty?) Barbadian player? Historical background and research by the one and only Wonk? But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Colour: light tawny Nose: Initial impression from the fresh sample was "Dominosteine?" (that chocolate covered triple layer sweets of marzipan, jelly and gingerbread). The rested sample is lighter, less jelly and fruity but still sweet, Christmas spice and white chocolate Taste: I can't wrap my head around how christmas-y it tastes. Sweet, cinnamon-clove mix, milk chocolate, powdered sugar. Finish: Still sweet, christmas bells still ringing. Verdict: I don't know. This doesn't taste like Navy to me. This is a sweet Christmas-themed spiced rum. I don't see how this is supposed to be historically accurate. Unless the British Navy was made up of Santa and his elves (turns out Matt was only responsible for the book part?!). What a let down (it's not "bad", but it's not what the story was trying to sell, imho). Pusser's Dockyard feels more Navy that this.

The nose and front taste are great, but it's just cloyingly sweet which kills it for me as a sipper. Makes a great mai tai.

It would be a premium mixer rum. Straight or neat, might not be in my top 10.
