Planteray Barbade Foundation 2004
Coconut lovers are the obvious audience here — tasters keep coming back to intense tropical coconut, dried raisin, caramel and a hint of dark chocolate over classic Barbados sweetness. At 55.5% the alcohol sits well integrated, never hot. A few call it lovely and elegant; others find it a very traditional bajan profile that stays simple for a 20-year-old.

Right from the start, this rum hits with a lovely aroma of dried fruits, caramel, and chocolate. As it opens up, the coconut really shines, adding an intense tropical note that deepens over time, eventually blending into sweet spices. For me, it’s an elegant and well-rounded rum with the classic Barbados profile, smooth vanilla, rich coconut, and a touch of dark chocolate bitterness. I honestly don’t understand the relatively low rating here; this is a refined expression that perfectly captures what a quality Barbadian rum should be.

Zimt - Kardamom - Schnecken in flüssiger Form, dazu salz-butter-karamell.

Tested at WLP 2024. All coconut and honey. Solid, but a little too simple for this age.

Zimt, Orange, Kokosnuss, Banane, Schokolade. Gefällt mir gut!

A generic Barbados rum, as the bottler is wont to offer in spades. The nose is immersed in toffee, caramel, milk chocolate, spices (vanilla, pepper), banana and coconut. This greediness slows the profile down a little in its aromatic ascent, as it just looks like a most traditional Bajan rum, without really standing out. The same is true on the palate. Bourbon, sweet and toasty notes come together to represent the Bajan style in all its splendor. Coconut, dried fruit (grapes), spices and the woodiness of milk chocolate mousse are all present. The alcohol is well integrated, drowned in an unmistakable deliciousness. The finish is not very long, but rather thin, dominated by sweet, honeyed, chocolatey, spicy and woody aromas. Coconut and raisin are still present, with a hint of banana. A conventional WIRD, from which we could have expected more for the age count and the marketing that recurrently promotes this distillery.

#4933 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Light wood, light roasted, fruity, light coconut, round, light honey, faint caramel. Palate Round, light oily, sweet, faint smoke, light wood, fruits, light coconut, light pineapple, spice. Finish Medium to long, fresh, sweet, fruity, light wood, faint honey, light coconut, spice.
