TRC Barbancourt Haiti (HD DOK Cask Finish) 2004

Here's the surprise: this is a 20-year Barbancourt from Haiti, but a Hampden DOK cask finish sits on top of it, and most tasters feel it flattens the original rum rather than lifting it. Expect vanilla, yellow tropical fruit and a light ester note, with a real alcohol bite at 63.8%. A few find it buttery and characterful; more call it muted and one-dimensional.

The look inside the bottle

How does TRC Barbancourt Haiti (HD DOK Cask Finish) 2004 taste?

Aggregated from 21 community reviews.

Hot Haiti rum muted by faint DOK finish Opinions run middling. The DOK finish is faint and, for several tasters, "bügelt alle Aromen nieder" — smothers the Haiti character. Hot, a bit metallic, decent but not memorable.

Perfect for

Cask-strength fans curious about Barbancourt-meets-Hampden experiments

Less suitable for

A quick sip while I sampled it. The first impression is not bad, but not outstanding either. The DOK finish is undeniable in my opinion. The palate is better than the nose. As expected, an extremely solid bottling once again at a fair price. Edit: now tasted again at my leisure. My conclusion is good, but I wouldn't necessarily need another bottle.

8,3:On the nose, esters, glue are the first thing we notice, quickly diminshed, some tropical, yellow fruits.A wood is roasted with nuts, spicy with vanilla. On aeration a true face of this rum comes out with red berries, especially raspberry, then delicious apple crumbles with almonds. We notice some perfume and lemon peel, when oxidized well. 8,6:On the palate, esters, glue attack us at first, with fermented tropical and red fruits, especially raspberry, cherry, the wood is roasted with caramel, spicy and when well rested, a bit resinous. Oxidation does a great job to grapefruit, dried currants and black berry, added to a chocolate fudge, we get a delicious dessert. Some metallic and vegetal notes are also present. 8,3:The finish is long with dry, spicy and roasted wood, a bit bitter, earthy and tasty red, dried fruits, black berry...

Joa.

The nose is not a revelation at first and rather unpleasant to meaningless with an alcoholic note ... but gets better after a little standing time. Then actually better on the palate. Buttery with caramel over the fruit and a few influences from the DOK cask. Still not a winner.

Hampden finishes make me immediately curious. In this case, that doesn't work for me. The DOK finish is weakly present, hovering over the aromas like an impenetrable veil on the palate. somehow uninspired and alcoholic.

I can't do anything with this bottling.... On the nose, I only perceive vanilla and a few sweetish yellow fruits. The palate somehow gives even less. You can just perceive some DOK influence, then bitterness, metallic aroma and weak sweetness. Somehow that's nothing. Too bad

Aged rum

Avg Rating 8.0/10 over 16,000 Rums

Aged rum is where the spirit earns its complexity. In a tropical warehouse a barrel loses 6 to 10 percent of its contents to evaporation every year, which is why an 8-year Caribbean rum can taste deeper than a 20-year Scotch. This page gathers every rum on RumX that has spent real time in wood, with community ratings to separate the genuinely mature from the merely dark.
