Barbancourt Volcanic Cane (Peated Whisky Cask Finish) 2008
Peat smoke, ash and a touch of tar sit right up front — so much so that most tasters say you'd swear you were drinking a young Islay whisky, not a 15-year Haitian cane-juice rum. Underneath there's light wood, a little roasted nuttiness and faint orange and plum. One member summed it up as "Ok Rum, but tastes too much like a whisky." The peat cask buries the base spirit entirely.

How does Barbancourt Volcanic Cane (Peated Whisky Cask Finish) 2008 taste?
Aggregated from 17 community reviews.
Peaty Barbancourt that drinks like Islay whisky Most tasters agree the peated finish swallows the rum whole — it drinks like Islay whisky. A few enjoy that; more wonder why you'd want it over an actual whisky.

#4894 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Fresh, light wood, faint roasted, peat, faint smoke, fruity, spice, light nutty, light caramel. Palate Oily, light wood, light roasted, peat, light smoke, light nutts, light caramel, faint orange, light plum. Finish Medium to long, light roasted wood, light peat, light smoke, light caramel, oily, light orange, faint prunes. This is a really nice example of a peated finish that for me works really well. I think it will split waters and many will disagree with me.

Exhibition review The Village 2025, Nuremberg: It's not that it didn't taste good at all, but when I want a whisky, I pour myself a whisky. And if I fancy rum, then I go for the rum. The point of a whisky finish where the base spirit is completely lost (this is especially true for peated whisky) is not entirely clear to me. You can try it if you get the chance, but that's all I need.

A very interesting rum. If someone poured it for me in a blind I'd guess straight whiskey, and if I'm not completely off base it reminds me of La Gavulin 16y in subtlety and flavour. I bought the rum at auction for a pretty penny, so the price/performance is fine.

Tasted at Rum Depot I have to align my experience with wha lt the others have mentioned. You think your are drinking whisky if you do not know that this a rum. The drink itself is pretty good, a nice try, but I do not see the niche for it.

Another whisky finish that completely masks the base spirit. You can't even taste whether the rum was produced from molasses or sugar cane.
