CoR Hampden Madeira (Single Cask Jamaican Rum) DOK 2023

People are genuinely split on this one. It's a young DOK Hampden ester bomb finished in a Madeira cask, and the red wine takes over hard — glue, dried fruit and overripe tropical notes fight against sweet-sour wine, medicinal bitterness and a hot, not-quite-tamed alcohol. A few tasters found it rich and balanced with rest; others felt the Madeira "znásilnila" the DOK and killed it.

The community says
  • High-ester glue funk
  • Hot, raw alcohol
  • Medicinal bitterness

Fruity esters meet sweet wine and medicinal notes - that could work well, but here a very present alcohol stands in the way of complete enjoyment, even if some time in the glass definitely helps. Apart from that, I don't agree with the rather reserved reviews - the aroma spectrum works, I don't perceive any noticeably unpleasant aromas either in the original product or in the Madeira cask.

8,4:On the nose, the first attack is with glue, esters and lots of dried fruits. When we overcome this, we get some roasted notes with some pastry, nuts, nice gingerbread and fruitcake with red fruits marmelade, overripe exotic fruit, the rum becomes a bit spicy with cinnamon and herbal. Aeration brings some marzipan, camphor, teranino, griotte chocolate. If well rested, punchy notes are here and now more overripe fermented tropical fruits with little funkiness.Oxydation and rest make this rum balanced and pleasant. 8,5:On the palate, the first profile is a bit roasted and medicinal, as it is gluey. When it settles down, there is a fruit cake with red fruit marmelade, some overripe exotic fruits and chocolate...Metallic notes crawl in, the rum becoming more spicy with sweet spices and yummy with nice caramelized pastry. We find some sour cherry, plum wine, teranino and iced chocolate cubes. We cannot overcome dryness and strong molasses with minty touch. When well rested, nice fermented, overripe exotic fruits arise. The rum is now a bit dirty, smoky, more funky and rich with even some umami notes, nicely balanced and tasty. 8,4:The finish is long, dry but light and fresh with dried and red fruits, as berries and in the end more roasted, smoky and toasted with some fruit cake and overripe tropical fruits. The Madeira wine is strongly present, when this rum is well rested, it becomes balanced and very tasty...

Spíš mi to evokuje NYE.

And no good glue, no good Madeira. Of the CoR trio, this is clearly the worst for me. The colour is the most interesting, dark red, but that's it. Flavour of the DOC raped by Madeira but taste-wise it didn't help much. In the taste it is a bright red wine that completely ruined the original HD and on the contrary it is not even a good Madeira :-(
