Savanna RumX Co-Bottling Grand Arôme 2007
"Strawberry punch!" is how one member summed it up, but there's a lot more going on: 17 years of tropical aging over a Savanna Grand Arôme cask strength, layering overripe strawberry and pineapple with menthol, olive brine, varnish, and dark roasted wood. Tasters keep calling it their best Savanna. The 68.7% is remarkably well integrated, though the wood and intensity demand attention.
The community says- Huge complexity
- Great ABV integration
- Endless finish

An absolute top-notch bottle from Savanna. Barrel #991 + Armagnac finish. Classic Grand Arôme funk (strawberry/pineapple/mint & cinnamon = Wick Menthol + Big Red gum + Campino candies) is definitely there but complemented by a very grown-up, solid dose of elegance and power, which also brings about an almost endless finish. For example, a 2009 Savanna HERR Blanc Paris shows a noticeably shorter finish and much less complexity in direct comparison. The typical GA aromas are present, but in a much more elegant and complex way. In other words: a "normal" GA like Blanc Paris 2009 or Rum Nation Savanna 2007/2006 GA also has these unusual pineapple, olive, strawberry, and "candy" notes, but it’s a bit more one-dimensional and especially younger compared to this clearly older rum here. The new RumX bottling #991 offers all that but feels much fuller-bodied, more elegant and complex, and overall has many more flavor nuances. When it comes to Savanna Grand Arôme, a new benchmark has definitely been set here. Cheers to Oli and the community!❣️

I actually wanted to hold back with my naturally very subjective "farmer's palate" rating until the release, since a tasted 2-cl sample is not very conclusive; but since other RumX users were already pushing, here is my first assessment from the direct comparison with RX24528: #991 wins the race on my tasting track in every respect. Whether it's the more complex, lovelier aroma, the fruitiness and roundness on the palate, the better alcohol integration, or the length of the finish – #991 simply convinces me more. (I'll leave aside the more pleasant smell that the empty glass of RX24528 gives off the next day, that's really a cute but useless nerd criterion.) I'll put the comparison in another picture: If both rums were portrayed by famous actors, RX24528 would be the rough, workshirt-wearing Chuck Norris – but RX20991 would be the elegant, almost universally likable George Clooney. And what crowns #991, despite the balanced Savanna DNA of esters and strawberries, is a hint of smoke in the midsection after some standing time. Superb. Update 2026-07-11: A little high-end cross-tasting where RX25324 and RX20991 swap rating places; otherwise, my previous scores are confirmed: RX25324 93 points RX20991 91 points RX24528 90 points RX20222 89 points RX20538 87 points

Dark and very spicy it comes across... Tropical fruits, dried fruits, strong cask influence, light esters. Very nice mouthfeel. I like it exceptionally well, very mature with high complexity. Tried it again today... the rum had more time. I find it clearly rounder and more complex. Real bomb!!!

A rum tasted at Whisky Live Paris in 2025 and in a Savanna tasting. A very nice nose, more oaky than usual for Savanna, but still very reasonable and I don’t mind it at all. The palate is very beautiful, lively and complex. The finish is long and balanced. A rather dark and oaky profile but very expressive (the effect of the Grand Arôme) and above all balanced with a nice freshness. A very nice release, well done! Edit: on the nose lots of fruit, tropical and yellow (mirabelle), bitter cherry and esters. The palate is very lively with a beautiful noble bitterness and perfectly integrated alcohol. A finish as long as you want. A much better rum tasted calmly, extraordinarily complex.

Edit for the mixer with cola definitely earned it some extra points. MegaMixer Today I had 3 Savannas in the glass to be able to place the new RumX bottling. The contenders were Rob's bottling, the Virtues, the Savanna Thunderstruck, and of course the RumX #991. Thanks again to Oliver for the sample in advance. In summary for me, the RumX has the best nose. It also takes first place in taste for me. You just can't beat 17 years of tropical aging of a Savanna. The Thunderstruck Grand Arome can't compete with that. Rob's Virtues secured second place with me.

#5741 27.09.2025 Day one of the Whisky Live 2025, which this year looks better organized/arranged inside. This is a great Savanna and I really look forward to the release in 2026. The balance is great and the wood and ABV is very well integrated. Fruits and mint go well in hand with the floral and spice notes.
Review by Mirco
Very strong Grand Arome with clear Savanna DNA. On the nose, lots of overripe fruit, strawberry, and a nice menthol freshness, as you know from Savanna, but with a more pronounced cask influence of wood and spices. On the palate, dense and intense with powerful esters, ripe fruit, and spicy depth. The long tropical aging brings noticeably more structure and complexity than many other bottlings. The high strength is very well integrated. Thanks Oli for the advance sample!
Review by Skyfly
The time in the barrel has really done this Grand Arome good. Besides the classic markers, it comes across as both dark with various spices and wood, as well as floral/fresh – two opposites that complement each other perfectly. The alcohol is first-class integrated and brings out strawberry and olive perfectly!
Review by RumTaTa
Cross tasting with the barrel sample from 2024 Nose: the alcohol integration is noticeably better in RX20991. Otherwise, the final bottling seems a bit fruitier and the original from 2024 more expansive in terms of glue and lacquer. Palate: hmm, difficult. On the first try I was sure there was a difference, but when I tried to pinpoint it on the second try, it was gone. It felt less sharp/bitey in RX20991. Would be interesting to know the alcohol content of the barrel sample. Finish: no noticeable difference, very long. I'm not saying anything new when I say this is an exceptional rum from Savanna! This intensity combined with (for Savanna standards) balance I don’t know from any other Savanna bottling. Still, a warning: I consider rum from Savanna to be very challenging and very, very far from what the widely known, common producers offer.
Review by TheRhumhoe
Definitely one of the best new releases at Whisky Live 2025, this collaboration between RumX and Savanna delivers on all its promises. The nose is powerful, driven by very ripe fruits (strawberry, pineapple) and a fresh floral and menthol note. A woody, roasted, vanilla imprint, but also esters and olives, stand out on the nose. The aromas are harmonious, the whole is structured and creamy—a winning combo. You get a real aromatic show on the palate. The roasted, spicy, and woody side takes a bit more space and perfectly complements this exuberant profile. The rum is smooth, very round, and shows great complexity. You can detect lots of floral notes, olives, esters, and cognac, the last two slightly drying the palate. But it’s the fruits that steal the show: strawberry, raspberry, pineapple, dried fruits, and citrus offer a real juice of ripe exotic fruits that’s incredibly tasty. The alcohol blends perfectly with the profile. The finish is superb and very long. Red and exotic fruits linger on the palate with their aromas, as do the olive, menthol, and varnish. The wood and spices are more discreet but add that touch of elegance that lets this hyper-flavorful, intense, yet remarkably balanced profile end beautifully. Without a doubt a must for Savanna and a quality bottling that perfectly expresses the spirit of RumX (with a very nice label to boot).

It's always complicated to give a 100, so I give less just to say something. But in the end, this is the type of Savanna I love: fruity, oaky. Very well-balanced. It's really a great pleasure and my best test at WL 2025.
Review by Stefan Persson
Tasted this rum at Rhum Fest Paris VIP area. It was in my opinion best in show. I would say it’s a new benchmark when it comes to intensity, at least for me. It’s a Grand Arôme from Savanna’s Savalle column still at 665 g/hlpa of esters. It’s tropical aged for 17 years in Reunion in an ex-cognac and ex-armagnac cask and bottled at 68,7% ABV in just 445 bottles exclusively for RumX. The nose is complex, intense, roasted, fruity, spicy, vegetal and woody with scents of menthol, diesel, esters, mocha, leather, banana, pineapple, red fruits, raisins, apple, cinnamon, vanilla and tobacco. At the palate it’s hot, intense, complex, roasted, spicy, fruity and floral with flavors of esters, saline, menthol, ginger, peppers, green olives, banana, pineapple, red fruits and herbals. The finish is very long, with added flavors of licorice, tea and dark fruits.
Review by TheJackDrop
After two extended tastings (RumX masterclass, Whisky Live), here is my verdict on what is shaping up to be THE bottling of 2026. The aromas quickly fill the room; this Grand Arôme spent 17 years in the tropics and hasn’t lost any of its brilliance, quite the opposite. Between dark fruits, varnished wood reminiscent of 30-year-old armagnacs and beyond, notes of mango, slightly esterified strawberry, candied oranges... you don’t know where to focus. But this particularly fruity profile also hides a darker side. The olive is discreet, but salty, spicy notes and a slightly ashy empyreumatic profile appear after about half an hour of airing. Like the finest GAs and the best that armagnac can offer, the stage is set. On the palate, the smooth mango, strawberries, and cherry stems stand out first through an oily veil. Very quickly, the fruity and harlequin candy notes are shaken up by tannins, varnished wood, fresh herbal notes, a hint of black tea, and green coffee. The finish seems never-ending and continues to evolve throughout the tasting. Sometimes fruity, minty, sometimes woody, slightly bitter, varnished, or more roasted, coffee, and lightly spiced. The chew remains, like a small fresh fruity lozenge adorned with a slight licorice touch. A grandiose rum that never ceases to surprise me and can be enjoyed again and again. No flaws, no alcohol burn, just pure pleasure in its raw state. If I weren’t such a fan of Savanna and RumX, I’d give it a 9.9, but you’ll say I’m exaggerating again ;)

Alkohol sehr gut eingebunden. Endloser Abgang.

Wow, I'm really impressed! Grand aroma funk combined with a distinct maturity that's second to none! A wonderful complexity of tropical esters, overripe fruits, strawberry, raisins, menthol, plenty of cask influence, all bottled at a bombastic 68%. A truly brutal monster and a worthy RumX bottling!

Respect, excellent rum. Very complex and well-balanced, every component is present and intense. On the palate, a bit more on the dark, spicy side, but still with fruit and chocolate. The caramel in the finish makes it very balanced again. Hats off!

Well then, let's see what cask 991 can do, I already got to try it once at a Savanna Masterclass. It's really an outstanding rum. Lots of (overripe) strawberry on the nose, along with wood and esters. On the palate, besides strawberry and wood, there's also a hint of citrus fruits.

WOW - I was honored with a tasting sample from Oliver before the official release and I can't wait for it. Right after pouring, it's clear that we're dealing with the pinnacle of what has ever come out of Savanna. The same barrel as the legendary Desert, and the extra years in the barrel have only benefited it. The price probably won't be low, but this one will definitely justify it without any problems. I'm really looking forward to the bottle. And thank you!
Review by Martin Švojgr
Luck was on my side and I got this bottle very early. 17 years in the tropics have slightly dulled the Grand Arome aroma, so it's not too pronounced. The taste is very complex, woodier; I can sense bombars, strawberries, dried fruit. The higher alcohol is noticeable, but it's not empty alcohol heat, rather a really strong balanced experience. If you're not expecting an ester bomb GA, then you'll really enjoy this.

Vielen Dank Oli für das tolle Sample. Super Auswahl!

The nose is already a bomb that I can smell from miles away. Beautiful strawberry-like ester item of the highest class. On the palate, an absolute bomb. Enormous intensity and complexity. Truly a unique drop.

My E(a)ster treat this year is a preview provided by Oliver G., thank you sooo much🙏. It was distilled in a Savalle Column Still and matured tropically, I heard rumours of an Armagnac Finish (not sure). Oliver convinced the distillery to give this special cask to the Rum-X community. Don’t miss out, release date is April 18th! It is a stunner: Leathery, sweaty-sweet and seducingly fruity, a wild mustang to be tamed - I am in for the ride: old bandages with iodine, the former Grand Arôme-dirtiness is tamed by maturity leaning towards great complexity and tertiary aromas. Warm mulch, tarry rope, olive tapenade, menthol, gum arabic and glue, pine sap, morello cherries, ripe bananas, dried prunes and an oily minerality lurking in the background. Wow. Complexity and excellent alcohol integration as it carries the load yet never takes center stage. It keeps delivering: Jungle flowers, licorice and sweet Indian spices meet incense now. Pleasant, yes, interesting and authentic, yesss! It bombs the palate, heavy at first and like a lick on an oil rig. Strait of Hormuz-style 😉. A second sip gets you used to the power and spiciness and the multi-faceted nose replicates wonderfully. Battery acid and acetone from its dirty new make is clearly there but subdued by the time in the cask. Smoky joss sticks, chocolate, rotting lemons and marinated olives are detectable – one for connoisseurs of big n’ loud esters a la carpet cleaner yet way more than just that. With water, it turns incredibly round and pleasant – hence presentable to “normal” people as well, the monster in a tuxedo, well-behaved, the jungle woods turn into mahogany. I prefer it neat but it is a swimmer – so it offers two profiles. It finishes by soothing the immense attack on one’s papillae, loads of tropical fruit and mulch on fresh pavement again. Ever getting sweeter, the iodin-minerality counters the sweet fruitiness. Great development and balance. A cocktail name? Sophisticated Battery Acid Fruit Punch from Reunion, strictly served in an old leather chair or on horseback 😜. Kudos, Oli! Massive selection.

#1776 24-04-2026 - Rate 9.4 To date the best Savanna I have tasted. Tough competition with Vagabond Savanna 21Y. Both fantastic rum. But this night the RumX got the upper hand. Looking forward to the next heads up between the two. Perhaps it should be a blind tasting.

The most balanced Grand Arome I've ever tried. The fruit is super strong, but the exceptionally high age offers a strong counterbalance. For people who don't like pure fruit bombs, this is just right.

Wau, super láhev:) hodně dřeva, taninů ale nic rušivého. Přijemně integrovaný alkohol. Věk je znát. Barva je tmavý mahagon, ve vůni přijemné estery a drěvo, proste to chceš pít. Dlouhý dojezd. Zážitek tuto láhve ochutnat

Totally over the top! Tons of wood combined with an exotic passion fruit cocktail. The tannins from the French oak capture the extreme profile and create a body like no other.

At 3pm, Rob Bauer (RumX) arrives accompanied by Sam Pritchard, mystery bottle in hand: a RumX co-bottling of Savanna's oldest great aroma! On tasting, there's fruit, mint and pretty floral notes, but spice and wood soon take over. A darker profile than usual for Savanna, with which I found it a little harder to connect. It's said to come from cask 991! The same as for The Wild Island bottlings (Grand Étang Sec and Piton des Neiges). Could this barrel be gigantic? Or is it a finish in cask 991? A mystery... Answer in 2026!

Tasted this rum today, it was my first Savanna. A bunch of fruits, esters, menthol, along some wood, spices, menthol and very light honey scents. I was quite surprised, in the mouth the 68,7 % ABV felt softer than what I had expected, alcohol intégration is very good. This one is really outstanding, thanks RumX !

This is exactly to my taste... beautiful red fruit - blackcurrants, which transition into a kind of dark, technical-camphor profile. And how intense the flavor is... I really enjoy it!

1er nez: baies rouges, fraise legere, bois, leger caramel, menthol. Finale interminable. Un regal !

What a rum! Very complex and pleasant at the same time. On the nose it's full of strawberry jam, it's sweet with a touch of olive brine in the back. On the palate it's another story, the strawberry is still there but it's not sweet anymore, instead with have tannins from the wood, a hint of smoke and lots of spices.

What began as my digital tasting diary is now the world's most comprehensive platform for rum fans, today carried by a small team with Jakob, Lukas and Katharina, with Robert supporting us as a freelancer. We combine the collective intelligence of our community with an integrated marketplace, so you can choose with confidence, without paperwork, detours, or expert jargon.
We selected and bottled this rum together with our community: one of 7 RumX co-bottlings since 2020.
