An absolute top-notch bottle from Savanna. Barrel #991 + Armagnac finish. Classic Grand Arôme funk (strawberry/pineapple/mint & cinnamon = Wick Menthol + Big Red gum + Campino candies) is definitely there but complemented by a very grown-up, solid dose of elegance and power, which also brings about an almost endless finish. For example, a 2009 Savanna HERR Blanc Paris shows a noticeably shorter finish and much less complexity in direct comparison. The typical GA aromas are present, but in a much more elegant and complex way. In other words: a "normal" GA like Blanc Paris 2009 or Rum Nation Savanna 2007/2006 GA also has these unusual pineapple, olive, strawberry, and "candy" notes, but it’s a bit more one-dimensional and especially younger compared to this clearly older rum here. The new RumX bottling #991 offers all that but feels much fuller-bodied, more elegant and complex, and overall has many more flavor nuances. When it comes to Savanna Grand Arôme, a new benchmark has definitely been set here. Cheers to Oli and the community!❣️

A rum tasted at Whisky Live Paris in 2025 and in a Savanna tasting. A very nice nose, more oaky than usual for Savanna, but still very reasonable and I don’t mind it at all. The palate is very beautiful, lively and complex. The finish is long and balanced. A rather dark and oaky profile but very expressive (the effect of the Grand Arôme) and above all balanced with a nice freshness. A very nice release, well done! Edit: on the nose lots of fruit, tropical and yellow (mirabelle), bitter cherry and esters. The palate is very lively with a beautiful noble bitterness and perfectly integrated alcohol. A finish as long as you want. A much better rum tasted calmly, extraordinarily complex.

Dark and very spicy it comes across... Tropical fruits, dried fruits, strong cask influence, light esters. Very nice mouthfeel. I like it exceptionally well, very mature with high complexity. Tried it again today... the rum had more time. I find it clearly rounder and more complex. Real bomb!!!

#5741 27.09.2025 Day one of the Whisky Live 2025, which this year looks better organized/arranged inside. This is a great Savanna and I really look forward to the release in 2026. The balance is great and the wood and ABV is very well integrated. Fruits and mint go well in hand with the floral and spice notes.

I actually wanted to hold back my naturally very subjective "farmer's palate" rating until the release, since a tasted 2-cl sample isn't very conclusive; but since other RumX users were already pushing, here is my first assessment from the direct comparison with RX24528: #991 wins the race on my tasting track in every respect. Whether it's the more complex, lovelier aroma, the fruitiness and roundness on the palate, the better alcohol integration, or the length of the finish – #991 simply convinces me more. (I'll leave out the more pleasant smell that the empty glass of RX24528 gives off the next day, that's really a cute but useless nerd criterion.) I'll put the comparison into another picture: If both rums were portrayed by famous actors, then RX24528 would be the rough, shirt-sleeved Chuck Norris – but RX20991 would be the elegant, almost universally likeable George Clooney. And what crowns #991, despite all the balanced Savanna DNA of esters and strawberries, is a hint of smoke in the midsection after some standing time. Superb.

The time in the barrel has really done this Grand Arome good. Besides the classic markers, it comes across as both dark with various spices and wood, as well as floral/fresh – two opposites that complement each other perfectly. The alcohol is first-class integrated and brings out strawberry and olive perfectly!

Definitely one of the best new releases at Whisky Live 2025, this collaboration between RumX and Savanna delivers on all its promises. The nose is powerful, driven by very ripe fruits (strawberry, pineapple) and a fresh floral and menthol note. A woody, roasted, vanilla imprint, but also esters and olives, stand out on the nose. The aromas are harmonious, the whole is structured and creamy—a winning combo. You get a real aromatic show on the palate. The roasted, spicy, and woody side takes a bit more space and perfectly complements this exuberant profile. The rum is smooth, very round, and shows great complexity. You can detect lots of floral notes, olives, esters, and cognac, the last two slightly drying the palate. But it’s the fruits that steal the show: strawberry, raspberry, pineapple, dried fruits, and citrus offer a real juice of ripe exotic fruits that’s incredibly tasty. The alcohol blends perfectly with the profile. The finish is superb and very long. Red and exotic fruits linger on the palate with their aromas, as do the olive, menthol, and varnish. The wood and spices are more discreet but add that touch of elegance that lets this hyper-flavorful, intense, yet remarkably balanced profile end beautifully. Without a doubt a must for Savanna and a quality bottling that perfectly expresses the spirit of RumX (with a very nice label to boot).

It's always complicated to give a 100, so I give less just to say something. But in the end, this is the type of Savanna I love: fruity, oaky. Very well-balanced. It's really a great pleasure and my best test at WL 2025.

Cross tasting with the barrel sample from 2024 Nose: the alcohol integration is noticeably better in RX20991. Otherwise, the final bottling seems a bit fruitier and the original from 2024 more expansive in terms of glue and lacquer. Palate: hmm, difficult. On the first try I was sure there was a difference, but when I tried to pinpoint it on the second try, it was gone. It felt less sharp/bitey in RX20991. Would be interesting to know the alcohol content of the barrel sample. Finish: no noticeable difference, very long. I'm not saying anything new when I say this is an exceptional rum from Savanna! This intensity combined with (for Savanna standards) balance I don’t know from any other Savanna bottling. Still, a warning: I consider rum from Savanna to be very challenging and very, very far from what the widely known, common producers offer.

After two extended tastings (RumX masterclass, Whisky Live), here is my verdict on what is shaping up to be THE bottling of 2026. The aromas quickly fill the room; this Grand Arôme spent 17 years in the tropics and hasn’t lost any of its brilliance, quite the opposite. Between dark fruits, varnished wood reminiscent of 30-year-old armagnacs and beyond, notes of mango, slightly esterified strawberry, candied oranges... you don’t know where to focus. But this particularly fruity profile also hides a darker side. The olive is discreet, but salty, spicy notes and a slightly ashy empyreumatic profile appear after about half an hour of airing. Like the finest GAs and the best that armagnac can offer, the stage is set. On the palate, the smooth mango, strawberries, and cherry stems stand out first through an oily veil. Very quickly, the fruity and harlequin candy notes are shaken up by tannins, varnished wood, fresh herbal notes, a hint of black tea, and green coffee. The finish seems never-ending and continues to evolve throughout the tasting. Sometimes fruity, minty, sometimes woody, slightly bitter, varnished, or more roasted, coffee, and lightly spiced. The chew remains, like a small fresh fruity lozenge adorned with a slight licorice touch. A grandiose rum that never ceases to surprise me and can be enjoyed again and again. No flaws, no alcohol burn, just pure pleasure in its raw state. If I weren’t such a fan of Savanna and RumX, I’d give it a 9.9, but you’ll say I’m exaggerating again ;)

Wow, I'm really impressed! Grand aroma funk combined with a distinct maturity that's second to none! A wonderful complexity of tropical esters, overripe fruits, strawberry, raisins, menthol, plenty of cask influence, all bottled at a bombastic 68%. A truly brutal monster and a worthy RumX bottling!

Tasted this rum at Rhum Fest Paris VIP area. It was in my opinion best in show. I would say it’s a new benchmark when it comes to intensity, at least for me. It’s a Grand Arôme from Savanna’s Savalle column still at 665 g/hlpa of esters. It’s tropical aged for 17 years in Reunion in an ex-cognac and ex-armagnac cask and bottled at 68,7% ABV in just 445 bottles exclusively for RumX. The nose is complex, intense, roasted, fruity, spicy, vegetal and woody with scents of menthol, diesel, esters, mocha, leather, banana, pineapple, red fruits, raisins, apple, cinnamon, vanilla and tobacco. At the palate it’s hot, intense, complex, roasted, spicy, fruity and floral with flavors of esters, saline, menthol, ginger, peppers, green olives, banana, pineapple, red fruits and herbals. The finish is very long, with added flavors of licorice, tea and dark fruits.

Alkohol sehr gut eingebunden. Endloser Abgang.

"This rum is deep, complex, and takes us on a journey between exuberant fruit, comforting and rich woodiness, and more briny, salty notes with surprising ease... impressive, really! What more can I say?"Read full review →

"This was the loudest pupil in the classroom, if you know what I mean. They weren’t always my best friends and here as well, I have some difficulty to connect due to the alcohol. So there, a new benchmark in terms of intensity, that’s for sure. And also the best Savanna I’ve had so far."Read full review →
