What surprises people is how much a single year in cask calms this down: the raw pineapple pulls back and marzipan, honey and roasted, bread-crust wood step forward, with berries and a little chocolate underneath. Still plenty of Hampden ester and glue, still 52% and warm, but several tasters call HGML the most balanced mark in the set — fruit and spice sitting evenly.

The most beautiful nose, complex, floral, with esters, honey, pineapple, raspberry and vegetal. A touch of dust. The palate is no slouch, with herbal sweets, esters, floral honey and a bitterness that makes you want to come back for more. The most beautiful finish, long, elegant and complex. An almost accomplished rum with only one year of cask ageing, except for a slight taste of wood dust.

Hampden 8 Marks Collection 1 year. We are slowly getting into the high ester range. This one (HGML) certainly has plenty of esters to offer. Apart from that, you can still sense tropical fruits, but mainly esters.

Dieser HGML hat mir ebenfalls sehr gut gefallen, weil er stark Karamell und Himbeere aufweisen kann. Röstaromen und auch etwas Schokolade im Gaumen/Abgang. Laut Zusatzinformationen ist ein hohes Maß an Furfurale (Karamell, röstige Nüsse) am Gaumen und Whisky-Lactone (floral, erdig) sowie Syringol (nasses Holz) an der Nase vorhanden.

Hier die Nummer Sechs der acht Marks Collection. Dieser Rum gefällt mir sehr gut schmeckt ein wenig komplexer als die vorherigen. Natürlich jede Menge Ester Anteil aber auch Früchte sind zu erkennen. Eine leichte Note von Karamell ist sogar zu erkennen.

Komplexe tiefe Nase. Schokolade und Karamell. Nicht zu überladen jedoch ausgewogen. Im Geschmack sehr schwer mit starkem Esther. Hält im Abgang lange an. Für mich ist der Bogen an estriger Komplexität nun überspannt und die 8 marks collection fällt in meiner Bewertung nun wieder ab.

Lighter floral nose with marzipan and some caramel. Mouth is woody and brings deep spices of amber and musk. Finish is short but ends with a pleasing caramel and fruit. It is woody but solid and one of the better Marks collections samples I have tried.

Hampden 8 Marks Collection - Aged vs. Unaged: Tja, HGML bleibt bisher mein Lieblings-Mark von Hampden. Gelagert oder ungelagert, liefert der für mich die beste Performance ab und die beste Balance zwischen fruchtigen und würzigen Noten. Fazit: keiner der 16 Rums war ein Genuss und die Bewertung ist nur als relativ untereinander zu verstehen. Trotzdem sehr interessant alle Marks unter gleichen Bedingungen zu probieren und die verschiedenen Ausprägungen von Frucht, Klebstoff, Würze und Überraschenderweise oft Umami zu schmecken. Demnächst ein Set mit 3-5 Jahren im Fass?

Exciting nose of tart, sweet raspberries, roasted marshmallows, marzipan cream and cocoa. The palate is also sweet and tart but pleasant to drink. No disturbing smokiness and no excessive acidity. Floral, slightly sweet, slightly woody and bitter on the finish.
