Hampden 8 Marks Collection (1 year) DOK
Made for people already deep into Hampden's ester world, this is the DOK mark — the highest-ester of the eight. Expect a brutal nose of glue, solvent and nail polish, then overripe pineapple, banana, marzipan and a sharp lime acidity. One taster called it an "Ester Bombe." The single year in cask rounds it slightly but several still find it watery and very sour.

Last one today, this time the DOK of the Hampden 8 Marks Collection 1 year. An absolutely top ester bomb. Exactly my thing. In addition, a slightly fruity note and solvent can be recognized in the nose. Then also slightly fruity on the palate. Delicious.

Volle Ladung Ananas und Banane, floral mit Kräutern und Marzipan. Sehr intensiv und konzentriert. Macht schon einiges her, sowie auch schon die blanko Variante. Laut Zusatzinformationen gibt es einen hohen Anteil an Furfural-Molekülen, die Aromen wie Karamell, geröstete Haselnüsse und Erdnussbutter hervorbringen. Weiterhin Whisky-Lactone, die herbe, erdige, florale und würzige Aromen liefern.

Leider schon die Nummer Acht der 8 Marks Collection und wieder mal ein sehr spannender Rum. Hier auch wieder deutlich Ester und tropische Früchte wie Ananas deutlich zu erkennen und zu riechen. Insgesamt mal wieder eine tolle Serie. Auch wenn es in der Vergangenheit schon bessere gab

In sensory terms, I have now reached the end of the line. Nevertheless, the nose is extremely intense. Clearly the Esther. Red stone fruit, I would say. Perhaps something different in the second tasting :-D for me due to the high ester content.

Decent DOK and fairly approachable. Young but not as firey as some. Nose brings overripe fruit, some light mint and complex young wood. Mouth is astringent with citrus and wood, and some mouth wash. Finish brings fruit and more flowery notes. Ok but not something I would buy a full bottle of!

A brutal nose of solvents, glue and esters. Fruits are in the background. There are also flowers and almost pure vanilla. Apart from a slightly acqueous entry, the palate is also rather violent. But there are also deviant aromas of rottenness and manure. The finish is long, but the deviant aromas are still there. The last rum in these two series, and although it has its qualities, it's still hard to drink.

Relatively typical DOK aroma. Sour lime juice, lime zest, marzipan cream and freshly baked brioche, tropical, highly fermented fruit and plenty of glue, esters and nail polish remover. But overall it seems very diluted. You notice almost nothing of the barrel ageing here...

Hampden 8 Marks Collection - Aged vs. Unaged: Lagerubg has softened the fum and made it more drinkable. still sour. Nevertheless, for me the DOK ranks behind HGML and C<>H. Very sour on the palate. Conclusion: none of the 16 rums was a pleasure and the rating is only to be understood as relative to each other. Nevertheless, it was very interesting to try all the Marks under the same conditions and to taste the different expressions of fruit, stickiness, spice and, surprisingly, often umami. A set with 3-5 years in the barrel coming soon?
