Clarendon Planteray Jamaica MMW 1984
"Holzig und bitter muss man definitiv mögen," as one taster put it — and that sums it up. This 40-year Clarendon is all oak: intense woodiness, sour citrus and peel, menthol and solvent, with dark chocolate and sour cherry underneath. The fruit shines on the nose but fades on a dry, tannic, astringent palate. Long, warming, slightly bitter finish. A wood lover's rum.

Sooo, where to start. 😅 After 35 years of tropical ageing this rum is very round and alcohol is well integrated. I won't write all my notes because it would be too long, but in general, on the nose it's very fruity and woody. With aerination, I got some darker notes, mostly roasted coconut and even some coffee & cocoa. The palate has dominant sour-fruity notes of pineapple and citrus fruits & peel. Finish is quite long, with intense tropical fruits again, woodiness and I even get slight grapes notes hiding somwhere in the back. For me, this is an excellent rum.

It's taken me a while since the actual opening (which I think was the first in the Czech Republic - we wave to alexadr at the castle), but I finally got around to writing a few words about it. I must stress that they are seen through my amateur lens. I like rums with a story, and I generally like it when something is the best. So if Planteray releases their oldest bottling, playing with details like a stopper milled from the cask itself then that's something I'm interested in. Coincidentally, they released the bottle at just the right time to open something really special, so I wiped away a tear at checkout and ordered the bottle. The packaging itself is a big deal, but I think someone has covered it very extensively here recently, so I won't wax poetic again. I just hope it's really beautiful. Let's go get some rum. I'd mention the 35 tropical aging, which will give an expected big load of wood. The color is darker mahogany. The aroma is dominated by fruity, citrus notes, complemented by wood. With time, perhaps chocolate and roasted almonds and coconut. In the mouth it is very oily, pouring a dry, woody coating over the whole palate, and this sensation remains for a very long time. The fruity side goes into the background, I would have expected much more of it. I wouldn't be afraid to compare the sensation to that of AEH 84. I can't leave out the phrase " alcohol perfectly integrated. The finish is dense, pleasantly warm, crushing and very long. And in it the fruit finally reappears. For me, this is a perfect piece, with perhaps only a small gripe about the price tag of this masterpiece.

Unfassbare 35 Jahre tropisch gereift! Viel Holz, ätherische Öle, Menthol, Lösungsmittel, adstringierend, etwas bitter, langer Abgang. Phantastisch!

Insanely old Clarendon essence! The typical menthol, varnish tones and overripe sour citrus fruits are very dominant. In addition, some cocoa nibs, dark sour cherries and a slight cognac influence. Red grapes, Limousin oak, black pepper and grapefruit zest on the finish. Lots of tannins and quite astringent on the finish. Nevertheless, a very exciting wine!

Holzig und bitter muss mannsefinitiv mögen. Sonst würde ich davon eher abraten. Für mich genau richtig

Amazing nose, full of fruit. Integrated alcohol, mild, soo woody in taste. Unfortunately the fruit taste is weak in the taste. And sooo sour
