Ripe estery fruits such as pineapple and banana combine with creamy pastry and a buttery sweetness. The wood maturation is perfectly integrated without overpowering the distillate. Some orange zest and nuances of spice complete the profile. Long-lasting finish with balanced fruit sweetness and light spice. Overall elegant, deep and a real Benchmark Long Pond experience. A nose ahead of its sister cask.

Edit Edit: 24.12.2024 added to the bottlekill. After 3 months in the open bottle, it has once again developed positively in my opinion. Rightly voted Rum of the Year 2024. Edit: now tasted again from the fresh bottle. Simply brilliant. Tasted calmly and with time. For me, it's one of the best I've ever had in a glass. If nothing better comes along in the near future, I'll give it another better rating. Tasted together with Chris2302 some time ago. Many thanks to the donor at the time who made this possible for both of us 😀 (a little tip: it was on the 2nd GAF, so it's not difficult to find the donor 😉 ) I thought the smell was bomb. After the first sip, we agreed that this is a drop that will easily break the 9! Anyone who has the opportunity to try it. Do not hesitate! Insane part!!! Drink of the gods!

This is honestly an excellent bottling. Rich and complex with a very nice depth to it. Compared to other bottlings of the vintage I had so far, this bottling does not feel watery but delivers significant power and richness. Very much on the top of my list of very long aged LPs.

An unbelievable grenade... Fruity, complex and lengthy - these are probably the key characteristics. Wonderfully full-bodied and harmonious as the aromas unfold in the glass. In May Tai a reference as far as Long Pond is concerned, actually even as far as Jamaica rum in general is concerned. I am really enthusiastic.

All I can say is: Hands off! 😜 Dangerous stuff! Dangerously drinkable. Alcohol never noticeable. Fruity on the nose like straight juice, with an elegant tingle on the palate. Congratulations, Rob and Distilia! This rum really has everything you could wish for in a rum. That there are still bottlings like this nowadays ...

Thank you Rob for this cool opportunity! It’s a very balanced LP with a very lovely low ester note. The barrel and also the alcohol are perfectly integrated. I enjoyed this one a lot! Unfortunately, the (high) price tag didn’t convinced me to buy a bottle.

Now I have to try the Rum of the Year quickly too... at the beginning it almost seems like a Hampden on the nose, there's a lot of fermented fruit and an amazing amount of power, I can hardly believe that it's only 51%. It needs a certain amount of time to stand, then it releases aromas of stewed plums, wax, polish, dried herbs, toffee, balsamic vinegar, vanilla sugar, very complex, difficult to capture everything. Somehow you don't even notice the 40 years in the barrel. Tropical fruit on the palate, chewing tobacco, wonderful balance between acidity and sweetness, long finish. Great bottling! Be sure to give it enough time and concentration!

I've been looking forward to tasting this sample for a while! The color is a little pale for its age. Nose: quite reserved from a distance and initially closed up close. Long pond umami and citrus fruits are immediately present. Little wood and roasted notes for its age. After 30 minutes in the glass, the fruitiness and the sweetness associated with it seem to increase (summer honey, floral). I find the intensity very pleasant and not overpowering. On the palate, I again experience the wonderful process of the rum "taking a swing" for one or two seconds and then throwing itself at the taste buds with full force - wonderful! I was a little shocked at first, because the rum seems really thin at first, but then a constantly changing aromatic backdrop builds up - incredible! On the palate you can really sense the age with intense barrel and roasted notes. However, the fruitiness is not lost. The finish is eternally long and very harmonious with the flavor experience and goes into the fruity-dry with a lot of barrel flow.

Very different from its distilia predecessor. Clearly fruitier! For 40y continental or not, the wood is surprisingly not too dominant here. Lots of yellow stone fruit such as mirabelle and peach, some banana and pineapple in the background, butter cookies and French butter-salt caramel on the finish, some lemon zest and roasted almonds, as well as a fine acidity. Very tasty and well-balanced! Great bottling from Rob!💣👌🏼 thanks for the opportunity. In terms of continental matured old Long Ponds, this is probably the new benchmark to date. 👌🏼🧨

Now, with some distance, I tasted it again in peace (on the GRF I had it with Savanna HERR Heartburn and between the 1999 Diamond S and the CH KFM ... the taste buds may have been a bit preloaded) ... now as a single sip again a touch better. Super part ... much more intense than the Charles Vane (which I found to be quite meagre and stale). In addition to the higher intensity, this one also brings butteriness (nom nom), elegance and opulent fruitiness. The best continental longpond I've tasted. Not quite my cup of tea, but more than just very good and with an incredible variety of aromas.

First nose of glue and solvents. Opens up to exotic fruits, papaya? Wood with a patina quietly shows its nose without forcing it; with an impression of milk chocolate, walnut, hazelnut. The alcohol is imperceptible, balanced and elegant. Surprisingly, melon, peach and lime are also present after a while, with herbaceous and medicinal notes taking over after 15 minutes of aeration. Round and oily on the palate, exotic, candied fruits are ultra-present, roasted, sticky. Beautiful butter, hazelnuts and spices. Once again, the alcohol is imperceptible, and all that's left is the pleasure of tasting. A little twist on the finish, where a slightly more woody, full-bodied aspect joins the fruit, all in balance, but to remind us a little of the venerable age of this juice.

9,2:On the nose, there are a lot of esters at first, with overripe buttery tropical and yellow fruits, citrus. So, some pineapple, banana, guava. Strange, for a second, a note of Maggi appears, quickly gone then. Roasted wood, burnt sugar come out after.They bring vegetal notes as grass, honeyed molasses, vanilla and pastries after airing the rum. The wood surely is dry due to long ageing in bourbon casks. The fruits become dried and the rum acidic, like we scent some vinegar.... All balanced and round. 8,8:On the palate, the attack is fruity with esters, overripe tropical fruits, citrus, spicy, dried fruits and the wood is roasted and intensively dry. There are some pineapple, dried fruits, prunes, pastry. It becomes acidic/bitter with tannins and for short, salty. Fortunatelly, molasses does its job, neutralizing tannins with herbal, flowery notes and honey, perhaps some umami. With some rest, it certainly becomes musty, mineral. After a while, we could again find some more acidity with rhubarb, perhaps vinegar notes. This unpleasant acidity downgrades the tasting marks a bit... 9,1:The finish is woody, dry, balanced with ripe tropical, yellow and dried fruits, a bit spicy, musty and sweet with honeyed biscuits.

Amazing Long Pond! On the nose, I would have guessed Hampden. On the palate then more Long Pond with a good amount of wood and a nice complexity. Reminds me a bit of the Long Pond 1941 with less herbs. Great!

Very beautiful golden color. Initially varnish and solvent. After a short wait, a very deep and complex nose. Fruits (pineapple, mirabelle plum), fine spice, earth and tobacco. The esters I dread are held back (plus point 😀). Very oily in the mouth, rarely (or never) tasted such good plastic. 😂 The Jamaican devil's stuff isn't really my thing, so this rum doesn't quite suit my taste either. But still, chapeau! Benchmark in terms of maturity, depth, complexity and still drinkability. Benchmark also in terms of branding and design. Very well done 😀😀 The music to go with it: Lennie Hibbert "Real Hot". And now I'm eagerly awaiting the Agricole from this series.

Now I've finally dared to try the sample. The nose is heavenly, fruity (pineapple, banana, citrus fruits), sweet, buttery, spicy, a little bit of solvent. It becomes more mature on the palate. Some wood is added, but not too much. Pleasant sweetness. Nice, fruity and woody finish. However, I can't keep up with the previous ratings of around 9.5, somehow I was expecting something more spectacular. I may have to give the rum a second chance and not taste it together with the three Cambridge STCEs. Would I still buy a bottle if I had tried the sample first? As things stand at the moment, probably not...

40 years is quite something, after the first sniff really very appealing with balanced fruit and woody notes. On the palate it softens like oil, and the alcohol is really well integrated. Great finish with very little ester. I think the bottling is really successful, I expected it to be rough after 40 years, but exactly the opposite. Many thanks for the sample Rob✌️

After four more LPs, here comes the long-awaited moment, THE beast, about which everyone has been raving. The nose may seem discreet, but in fact it's refined and elegant. The age of this rum is evident, with enveloping oak, tamed esters and overripe fruit. The first palate is both expressive and sweet, then the woody tannins and their bitterness take over without repressing the other aromas, which reappear on the finish. An incredible finish here, which begins with the tannins and bitterness of the wood and ends in balance with incredible length! A rum in a class of its own. I wasn't too keen on the bitter wood at the end, but the finish that follows is just anthology!

What can I add… at first some estery glue but it transforms fast into (candied) pineapple, tropical fruits, Jamaican loveliness. Old Jamaican rum matured to perfection, where the wood married the rum and it’s their ruby anniversary, welcome to the party. The rum is layered, but inviting and extremely drinkable. Every sip is welcoming the next one. A long fruity, woody and slightly dry finish, contributing to the overall experience. I wanted the glass to last longer throughout the evening, but that’s proven to be impossible. Well done Rob & Distilia 👏

GRF 13: There's the legendary "The Sins": I can only agree with the words of praise from all sides... this is one of the best rums I've had in my glass so far.... No trace of alcohol... an enormous variety of flavors and smoothness that I have rarely experienced like this... on the palate it spreads creamy, oily soft... [ ] I had the chance to taste it directly from Rob Bauer at GAF 2024. What a rum! Tropical fruit at its best with a peach, pear and watermelon explosion. The nose could be Hampden, but on the palate comes a complex Long Pond perfectly matured. For me as a rum 93/100 and for the beautiful bottle as an art object 100/100.

First gear on the 13th GRF was definitely aimed at Rob and his 40 yo LP . Nose: very dense and elegant aromas, complex yet very balanced. Wonderfully deep honey sweetness with broad esters, orange with lemon and a light touch of banana. In addition to a woody spiciness, there is also a light buttery vinegar note. No sting, no bite, super integrated alcohol. I think more time would allow even more aromas to come through. Already damn nice. 9.5 Palate: wow, incredibly complex, dense, balanced and elegant. It reveals an interesting flavor curve, from fine esters to a pleasant woodiness to a warm fruity honey sweetness. There is also a slightly buttery-bacon note on the finish. Soft esters, which are immediately accompanied by spice with licorice and pineapple-lemon... and before I can even get to the core, the glass is already empty... a great pity... brilliant drop. 9,5 Already the best LP I've had in a glass so far.

Wow! I'm glad I took a sample of this Jamaican beauty. The 51.6° after 40 years of aging tells me it's much more continental than tropical. And that's certainly a good thing, as it's not all wood juice. 👃 Sweet, buttery esters over time. All kinds of very ripe fruit, pineapple, mango, banana, green melon, apricot, peach, tangerine. Delicious pastries with almonds and powdered sugar, macaroons, lemon meringue pie, cream puffs. Well-integrated oak, despite its age, with just the right amount of vanilla and spice. Subtle floral elegance of frangipani flowers, still life of exotic flowers. 😋 Funk despite the candles on the counter! The impression is that of a basket of fruit from various horizons, cut into pieces and cooked in a pan with butter. The barrel delivers warm, silky, vanilla and spicy (pink pepper, spicy) tannins. I get a little brine and umami on the finish. A creamy, oily, sweet, elegant texture. What magical process was used to make the alcoholic sensation disappear? Hat 🎩🐰 ⛳ Long, warm, bitter, balanced. Esters, fruity, pineapple and sour cherry, butterscotch, warm pastries. Salty, spicy preserved lemon. The empty glass stands on its own, which says a lot about the quality of this selection. 🏆 Fruity & slightly funky, complex & complete, intense & silky, elegant & balanced, all with imperceptible and beautifully integrated alcohol. To date, the highest rating I've given a Rum. Well done Rob 👏

Nr. 3000. Ein richtig krasses Teil, was Rob Bauer hier aus dem Hut gezaubert hat. Viel Frucht in der Nase (Ananas und Banane), aber auch Holz ist erkennbar. Am Gaumen sehr viel Holz und Fass, aber auch tropische Früchte und etwas Ester. Richtig geiles Teil.

Outstanding bottling! Balanced nose with lots of fruit, light wood and glue in harmonious interplay. The palate is much more intense, more wood and the fruit recedes a little into the background. Super mouthfeel, oily & full. Nothing dominates, rather the different flavors come in waves and create a harmonious whole. Superbly integrated alcohol. Long finish. Fantastic!

After more than 100 reviews, what else can I say? For me, it's probably the best rum I've had in my glass so far, even compared to its sister cask (Vane and Horses). The alcohol is - even if this was hardly possible - even better integrated and the wood is almost imperceptible despite the long storage period. The finish lasts forever and three days!

A wonderful Long Pond that combines the strengths of continental matured rums and is excellently balanced. For all its quality, I can't quite agree with the euphoric reviews, as it lacks some intensity and the absolute wow factor. The rating was based on a 2 cl sample, I'm curious to see how further tastings that are planned will change the rating. P.S.: Incidentally, I'm not a fan of these "themed bottlings" at all, it's just silly, even though the design here is very well done overall.

Time to sin! Direkt als erstes auf dem 13. German Rum Festival direkt bei Rob probiert. Wahnsinnig smooth in der Nase, ist da überhaupt Alkohol drin? Zurückhaltend, elegant, die Sünde ist ja richtig brav, aber im positiven Sinne! Obwohl ich auf dem GRF sitze und es noch viel zu probieren geht, will ich noch gar nicht probieren, da die Nase schon viel Spaß macht. Aber dann: WOW! Der Rum erfüllt den ganzen Mundraum mit nur wenigen Tropfen. 40 Jahre im Fass haben hier erstklassige Arbeit geleistet. Eigentlich kann man nur sagen „Wahnsinnig komplex“. Der Rum bespielt die ganze Aromen-Palette, von anfänglichen Estern geht es über Früchte zu Gewürzen und einer angenehmen leichten Holzigkeit bis er leicht süß den Gaumen verlässt. Die Eindrücke oben können die Komplexität wirklich nur schwer wiedergeben und obwohl ich mir hier viel Zeit nehme, wird das dem Rum nicht gerecht. Das schreit auf jeden Fall nochmal nach einer Verkostung! Chapeau, Rob!

The nose is soft and full-bodied with notes of esters, tropical fruits, cantaloupe melon, citrus essential oils, young wood, butter and roast, very appealing. The palate is consistent with the nose, extremely round and elegant with a sweet note on the finish that softens the whole. Aging can be felt, however, it shows less years. In the empty glass aged cheese and tropical fruit esters. I am not a fan of Jamaicans the rating fluctuates between 8.9 and 9, but objectively it is a 9+ because of its strong roundness and elegance.

Exceptionally complex rum with perfectly integrated fruit and ester components. The wood is very discreet here and despite its age it gives the rum an almost youthful freshness. Dangerously drinkable, this profile can otherwise only be found in the 1941 Long Pond.

Ein Absolutes Meisterwerk ! Ich bin hin und weg von dieser enormen Komplexität, der Aromendichte und der Cremigkeit. Die Nase ist sehr filigran, fruchtig und nach längerer Zeit im Glas überaus reich an Aromen von Karamell, Keksen und Süßgebäck. Von der Buttrigkeit ganz zu schweigen. Ebenso vielschichtig und genial ist auch der Gaumen. Eine phänomenale Süße eröffnet das Aromenspektakel aus leichten Estern, Butter, Keksteig und in Karamell getunkten Früchten. Hinzu kommt noch eine vanillige Tabaknote, etwas Fruchtschokolade und Eiche. Alles wird begleitet von einer angenehmen Röstnote, die an dunklen Kuchenrand erinnert. Der sehr lange und filigrane Abgang ist ebenso komplex und raffiniert wie Nase und Gaumen. Hier kommt noch einmal die süße und karamellige Seite des Rums gut zum Vorschein. Ein weiteres Highlight ist das leere Glas, wenn der Rum ein wenig an der Glaswand antrocknen konnte. Danke an @BananaJoe und @LukaŽiga für die Samples 😆

This is the first time I've tasted a rum that's older than me! I hope that, like it, I'll improve with age :) What's striking about this tasting is its completeness. All the aromas are clearly perceptible, but they are very varied: fruit, esters, pastry and, lastly, darker aromas such as smoke or coffee. There's a buttery edge throughout. Finally, it's also as elegant as only long continental ageing can make it. It's a wonderful experience!

The Longest Pond I have the honor of having "The Sins Avarice" by Maestro Rob Bauer in my glass. The good rum had to wait a very long time for this. It went into the barrel in 1983 - I didn't exist then. My nose is filled with esters, Jamaica's unmistakable greeting. But there's more, because the esters fade the longer the glass stands. Dwindling is wrong, they move nobly into the background. I find ripe fruit, very ripe fruit. Yellow fruit. There is also a hint of vanilla, restrained but promisingly sweet. I also find a few dried apple slices and wood, but the sugar-sweet fruit basket remains dominant. Now the palate - and I'm not a fan of many esters, having gone horribly overboard with the DOKs and TECCs of this world for a while. If I can choose freely, it's usually a rum from Trinidad or Guyana, less and less often Jamaica. Of course, I also have the esters on my palate with this masterpiece. No glue, tar or petrol, but the fruity variety. The overripe fruit basket also settles in the mouth. There is also a hint of licorice, vanilla and perhaps some cake batter. The alcohol, still 51.6 percent, is perfectly integrated. Even on the "sober palate", i.e. without having warned the mouth, nothing burns here. The finish brings something else to the fore. It is very, very long. The esters go with it, but I also have leather and wood in my throat. The fruit basket sends a final greeting. All in all, a really fantastic pick from the master from the south - it's almost a shame that the Sins series is always a serious sin for the bank account. Otherwise I would have said: definitely buy it. So the conclusion is: if you can, you should. 95/100, but only because it's a Jamaican, which is currently having a really hard time with me. Top piece!

A really very nice product. Despite being 40 years old, the wood influences in the color and taste are not extreme. Instead, very great and not too intrusive ester influences. Very nice fruity notes with a slight sweetness.

Unfortunately, I had seen the general rating before I tasted it. This naturally raised my expectations. The nose is not quite classic Jamaican. Fruit, wood and some alcohol...but not an ester bomb. The taste is very complex and multi-layered. .... The eternally long finish and the perfectly integrated alcohol are particularly noteworthy. A nice overall package. But my perception is probably not as good as most of the experts here. Therefore no maximum score. ...but almost :-)

Nase: Für einen Long Pond kommt die Nase ungewöhnlich intensiv und beinahe schon extrem daher: ich bin gedanklich erst einmal bei Hampden! Da steckt einiges an Estern drin, die den Rum mit Lösungsmitteln und Klebstoff bereichern, aber man findet hier auch vieles, was man von einem guten, alten Long Pond erwartet, denn neben seiner Kraft, bringt er auch die für alte LP so typischen feinen und filigranen Noten mit, die man ebenso wenig lange suchen muss wie die Ester. Allerdings kommen diese hier ausgeprägter daher als bei anderen 80s Long Ponds. Gemeinsam haben sie wieder, dass man keinerlei alkoholische Schärfe in der Nase hat, die 51,6% kommen richtig smooth und geben den olfaktorischen Blick frei auf die vielen Noten und Assoziation die in diesem Rum stecken. Da sind neben Lösungsmitteln und Klebstoffen auch ein vegetaler Einschlag, der mich an Stroh und frisch geschnittenes Geäst denken lässt. Dazu gesellen sich gegrillte Ananas, Zitrusfrüchte, Apfel, Banane, Vanille und dunkle Erde. Eine sanfte Note vom Eichenholz des Fasses ist ebenfalls dabei, allerdings beeindruckt es mich sehr, wie wenig ausgeprägt diese nach 40 Jahren ist. Der Rum ist auf keinen Fall verholzt! Gaumen: Ein richtig schön schwerer, komplexer, öliger und mundfüllender Jamaicaner, der mich auch hier erst einmal wieder an Hampden erinnert, allerdings auch an die tropisch gereiften High Ester Long Ponds, nur eben durch die kontinentale Reife in eine vollkommen andere Richtung entwickelt! Auch das Profil vom Gordon & MacPhail Long Pond 1941 kommt mir in den Sinn. Am Gaumen verleugnet der Rum sein Alter sehr viel weniger als in der Nase. Hier kommt das Eichenholz richtig schön durch und geht mit Anklängen von Gewürzen, insbesondere Nelke und Anis stechen heraus, frischer Erde und der Süße und Säure von tropischen Früchten ein sehr schönes Aromenspiel ein, bei dem keine eine andere Komponente erschlägt. Abgang: Nach hinten heraus kommt die Holznote vollends zum tragen. Sie nimmt darüber hinaus noch einiges an Gewürzen mit, Anis ist da wieder dabei, aber auch immer noch diese leckere Süße von Früchten. Dazu ist der Abgang ewig lang. Ganz großes Kino!

Ester, Creme, tropische Früchte, etwas Tomatenschale, Fruchtgummi. Blind nicht zwingend als Jamaika erkennbar. sehr harmonisch und rund, das Fass gut eingebunden. Am Gaumen ein cremiger Esterkompott, perfekt balanciert, weich und stimmig. Unglaublich fruchtig für das Alter, mit Erdbeere im Fokus. Der Abgang ist lang und toll.

My highlight of the GRF. It's amazing how well everything harmonizes here. Fruit, acidity, esters paired with barrel influence that tames the whole thing somewhat and leaves a wonderful fruity, dry finish. Great cinema.

I had the pleasure of tasting it at the 2nd German Armagnac Festival in Stuttgart. My gosh. Incredibly complex, esters without end but without straining. Unbelievably palatable and at the same time deep with an ultra long finish. One of the coolest Jamaicans I've ever tasted. Now if only I could find a bottle split🥲

I was able to taste this at Whiskyfair Limburg with Robert. Right from the start, the Nose finds all the right places. It is a perfect integration of brown butter, yellow fruits, mid level esters and some sour blueberries. On the initial palate there is again the beloved browned butter, the esters are present, but never overwhelming, than we get to a sweetness you get from very good shortbread. The esters linger and are met by a whiff of tannines from a very dry cask, that dont really get all that bitter. The finish is incredibly long and focuses on the sweetness that developed later. Ester is again all along the journey and a hint of that dry casks wants to remain as well. It almost gets a little malty at the end, but that is after a long lingering aftertaste that slowly fades in a lovely memory of what you just sipped. This is a superior choice by Robert and i seriously love these buttery/buteric acid LP. Well done, my wallet hates you a little bit!
