Velier Uitvlugt Modified GS MGS 1996
Coconut, caramel and toasted oak lead here, with dried fruit, milk chocolate and warm spice sitting behind. This tropically-aged Uitvlugt from Velier is thick, oily and sweetish, with the alcohol folding in nicely after some air. Several tasters mention it drinks less complex than its reputation — a few even pegged it as Barbados blind. Rich and spice-forward more than fruity.

Nice Guyana column profile on the nose. Coconut, milk chocolate and some vanilla with notes of dried fruits. Starts off with an additional note of wet cardboard and needs some time to breath to open up and lose its alcoholic note. The patience is well rewarded, however. Personally, I prefer the 96 Diamonds but make no mistake, this is an excellent representation of what you (should) love about DDL rums. On the palate also a rich and deep Demerara profile with dried fruits, coffee and dark caramel notes. Some sweetness works well with the fruity notes. It’s not the most complex out of the top Dermeraras but to me a excellent representation of the profile‘s highlights.

... The Old Velier Demerara rum is the best thing you can taste in the rum world. The rums were aged in the tropics for several years by mistake and nobody refilled the barrel. The Andel tax was 90% or more, which is why the taste is especially full and intense. Even though it is an extra expensive product, I recommend to taste a rum from this series at least once in your life.

Well, now it's time to taste one of the Unicorns you hear so much about, but rarely see in your glass... Big demerara profile of nuts, vanilla, coconut, cooked sugar, it's woody but pleasant and greedy. On the palate, it follows the same pattern, which is very good. So verdict: very, very good, but not necessarily better than other, less hard-to-find dark demerara. So very happy to be able to share this bottle for "only" 600€ 😅, tomorrow if I come across it again at the same price, I'd rather take 1 diamond CBH + 1 Skeldon + 1 Albion from El Dorado, all 3 are at the same level, or so equivalent...

Unfortunately, I can't quite go along with the 90+ ratings. But it's fantastic to be able to drink a rum like this. Thank you Rodolphe for this great split.

Pretty close to its big brother from 1997 vintage. Sweet, round, another strong Uitvlugt from Velier !
Review by Thunderbird
The nose is fantastic ... delicate tropical fruit, sweetish caramel with vanilla, confectionery and something nutty... The palate appears much stronger, initially caramel-like, but then quickly switching to the woody, spicy side (with light caramel and confectionery aromas here too). The longer it lingers on the palate, the clearer the woody influence. Becomes slightly bitter. The finish is more on the dark side. This is an excellent rum, without question. But at this price, I'd rather get myself a few El Dorado Rare Casks. Many thanks to Rodolpho for the sample

Very dark and oily. Glue, coconut, dried apricots, caramel. Powerful and yet balanced. Not complex, but insanely beguiling 😍😍😍 The spiciness comes out over time. Then full, warm and oily in the mouth. Woody and resinous. Long, woody and above all spicy finish. Very cool.☺️ A wonderful rum. Simpler, but it tastes better than its brother from 1997. Too bad there was no Savalle as part of the Rare Collection. ☹️ Shoutout to Rodolphe! 🙏🙏🙏

A rum tasted in a restaurant. A sweet nose of caramelized almonds and vanilla coconut with old wood, old leather.A palate with sweetness, broad and deep aromas. An old club house in a tropical climate with cups full of fruit. An incredible finish with flavors that play hide and seek. The empty glass sums it all up. A wonderful tropical Demerara experience.

On par with the Uitvlugt 1997!
Review by mto75
something special in a glass for Christmas, of course 😊Dried fruit, butterscotch, floor wax, tobacco, old barrel, also something slightly sour that perhaps comes closest to aceto balsamico. A pleasant blend of concentrated spice, toasty aromas, caramel and chocolate on the palate. Many thanks again to Rodolphe for sharing such a treasure at the original price!

A great release and I really like how long the finish is on this rum. Woody, fruity with spices and a well balanced full bodied rum. Killed a bottle and should have bought more. But it's always easy to look in the rearview mirror and want something.
Review by Alessandro
The first Demerara Velier I have tried. On the nose vanilla and caramel, on the palate initially caramel predominates then wood and spices that persist on the long finish. In my opinion given today's market value it is out of price, with a little less quality better to get a Demerara rare collection like Albion, Skeldon, etc.

Everything you ime in a demerara, a crazy delicacy! It's just incredible stuff in a glass...

Tasted the blind tasting again and ranked it at 8.9 points. Stays the same. Also a real grenade. But it wasn't quite as harmonious blind, at least for me, which is why it was just on the edge of excellent.

Sehr leckerer Uitvlugt.

There has been said and written a lot of things about this already. I can only add that for me, it’s amongst the best Demerara rums I’ve tasted so far in my rum journey. I could just stick my nose in the glass forever. Dark, sweet, nutty, herbaceous with a slight bitterness in aftertaste and some astringent tones in the sides of the mouth from the wood that remain for quite some time. Best things I can compare it to are some of the El Dorado Rare Cask releases (Skeldon, Albion,…) Being able to taste a sample at this moment in time for a very affordable price is something to be peticularly thankful for. Shoutout to Rod for the split 🙌 I’m reluctant to drinking the last drops because after that it will be gone 🥲

An angel from heaven, brought down to earth in liquid form. The nose is an absolute delight, carried by spicy flavors (vanilla, nutmeg, pepper, chili), roasted notes of mocha, almond and hazelnut, gourmet aromas of chocolate, caramel, cookie and toffee, exotic fruits and a floral freshness. The whole is extremely fragrant, elegant and well-balanced. You could stay on the nose for hours. On the palate, we reach ecstasy with this very creamy, very rich and incredibly delicate profile. The gourmet flavors described above sit perfectly alongside spicy, roasted and woody flavors, offering a superb blend of deliciousness and complexity beyond comprehension. The fruit and floral notes are more subdued, but add that little something extra that clearly makes the difference among the great rums. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. On the finish, warm, spicy flavors set the ball rolling, before chocolate, caramel, fruit, cream and menthol take over in an uninterrupted show of impeccable transition. A truly epic, rum-like experience that awakens all the senses, much to our delight. A rum to fall in love with.

Wow. This is Guyana/uitvlugt? Smells after 1h breathing rather like the best banana split with caramelized coconut chips ever!🤤🍫🍌🥥 Had I blind rather put to Barbados Foursquare. Taste also really awesome sweet, spicy after fully ripe banana, coconut, 50% chocolate, caramel candy.... Mega tasty and intense, extremely balanced. My association with banana split with coconut caramel goes through full flavor, in the finish comes through some fresh mint and medjoul dates. Incredibly good!
Review by Frank
Elegante, hochwertige Qualität, wie erwartet. Nase: würzig-fruchtig-karamellig. Ganz hinten etwas altes Stroh. Nase besser aus Gaumen. Aber meckern auf hohem Niveau!

Update: Blind tasting ... came to the same rating again in blind. Very tasty rum. Much more inconspicuous on the nose than on the palate. Here, bold coffee and malt notes come together to create a noble column profile. Wonderful. My first Velier Demerara - thank you Rodolphe for this split 🙏

Perhaps a unique opportunity to taste such a rum: The nose is herrausragend beautiful with some cocoa, leather, tobacco. Few herbs as I unfortunately often find them in other Guyanas. On the palate then a fulfillment. Incredibly versatile, soft, delicious. The variety of flavors is great and it's hard for me to describe individual ones. The finish then not endless, it also does not have the highest % and the longest storage. But forms incredibly mouth watering and makes you want to take the next sip. This rum is another reason for the reputation of Velier and tropically aged Demeraras. For me, it is by far the best Demerara I've had the pleasure of drinking, and I don't know what rum (other than Skeldon's) could come close. An incredible experience at a fair price. Thank you Rodolphe!!!

Review by Benoit Mahe
Review by Christoph H.
A really great rum. The nose is beautifully deep and warm with raisins and dried dates, as well as coconut and banana. However, the enormous spiciness and the wood are in the foreground. It's all very pleasant and sweet on the nose, even though I've had more complex ones from DDL. Very sweet, creamy and powerful in the mouth. The fruit and floral notes are somewhat more pronounced. The barrel aromas are still pleasantly present and to the point. Very successful!
Review by Manuel
Brilliant Guyana Velier, which falls somewhat short in direct comparison to the Uitvflugt ULR. A little more restrained on the nose. Very expressive on the palate with lots of spices, barrel influences and a pleasant sweetness.

Review by Johnny Rumcask

Franconian Rum Tasting Gang & Jakob, 2023-07-27 Teil 2: Wow!
Review by Piotr Ignasiak
Really nice elegant sipper, not overly complex. I like the chocolate notes. To me it's on par with Rare collection, which is the best of Guyana that I tried. Thanks alot Rodolophe for sharing the bottle.

Phew, what shall I say? :) The nose is a great…. but also really hard to recognize uitvlugt. It’s so Foursquare-esque, blind I’d have bet my house on it. Coconut en Maße, sweet molasses, light. Palate is in line, great alcohol integration. Pronounced sweetness, not the biggest complexity. Not a lot of oak despite 18 yrs in tropics. Medium finish. I’d say it’s unique for Guyana, but a FS 2009 is super similar though this one has a greater alcohol integration. And not more oak despite 6 years more in the tropics
Review by Vincent D
Nez hyper gourmand.
Review by Carlitooo

Review by Rhum Mirror 🇧🇪
The nose is very greedy and pastry. We are clearly on a molasses rum. We find some nice woody, spicy but especially beautiful candied fruits. We are clearly on caramel with raisins! A nose rather in the restraint nevertheless with orangette in background. In mouth it is less fruity, we turn more on a spicy-woody profile. A little too wise ... The finish is surprisingly short with a bitter/salty/grilled profile. Well, how to say, I was disappointed by this rum. I probably expected too much. Elevated to the rank of unicorn on the web with a market value of 2000€ on the secondary market, I was really expecting something heavy! The nose was interesting but the mouth too much in the restraint and a final much too short!

Hervorragend. Erinnert vom Profil deutlich an den ULR 1997.
