The Whisky Jury The Duo Chapter 2 2017
Sip it neat and the Hampden side leads: overripe pineapple, glue, esters, a herbal-eucalyptus edge, then honeyed sweetness from the South American base. At 50.7% the heat is mostly tamed. Several tasters call it an easy sipper that's still interesting, though a few find the two halves don't fully knit, and the finish can run short.

Funky pineapple esters over a soft honey base Well-liked for the price — funky pineapple and esters over a soft honey base. Some love it neat; others say the blend feels stitched together, or works better in a Mai Tai.

I am rating it in direct comparison with the first Duo. The nose is a bit shy, there is clearly some high Ester Hampden but you can smell that it is „on top“ of something else. Remember, it is a blend of 20% HD 2yr and 80% South America 6yr, whatever that may be. But let’s continue. The fruitiness and esters are lacking a bit of punch and you can smell the dilution with something less fruity, kind of dull. But still stere are some ripe fruits (pineapple and papaya), some (not so active) wood and dust. Some vegetal notes and a caramelised sweetness. The palate is way more inviting. It is sweet (sweeter than your usual Hampden) but it works quite well as the HD manages to punch through. There are more ripe fruits, some molasses and strawberries. In the finish there is some honey and a nice level of dryness. Overall it differs a lot from the first Duo or your typical HD but I like it a lot.

The 20% high esters are very dominant on the nose, but I had expected that. After a while, a spicy note comes through. The typical fruity notes from Jamaica are also dominant on the palate, followed by a slightly peppery, spicy note. The 80% South America is most noticeable through a slightly sweet honey note. The finish is slightly astringent and spicy. For me, a very successful blend that is really enjoyable and also has a good PLV. I'll have to get myself another bottle.

Lecker.

8,3:On the nose, it is very complex, estery, the first attack are really overripe, fermented tropical fruits with banana, pineapple, grass, medicinal side is very strong with metallic notes, glue, resin, eucalyptus. Airing brings us roundedness, some roasted side, toasted wood and baking spices with cinnamon and ginger, overripe fruits become dried now with plum marmelade and smoky, after a while marzipan is noticed and some minty, herbal side of this rum. With some resting, there is also orange peel. 8,6:On the palate, strong ripe, fermented gourmand tropical fruits hit us first, then salty side comes out, wanes, quickly overpowered with juicy strawberry that changes to caramelized dried fruits aspect with plum marmelade pastries and some smoke, it becomes a bit dry and astringent. The palate is round. It takes a while to notice weak pepper, medicinal, herbal notes with rosemary and almost no bitterness. 8,5:The finish is very long, fruity, with dried fruits, a bit dry and round... Nice🙂.

Bin begeistert. Vor allem für den Preis.

Despite the low <>H content (20%), the Hampden sets the pace both on the nose and on the palate. Ester, eucalyptus, tropical fruits, marzipan, glue on the palate, plus a little plastic and fermentation. The young age of the blend is somewhat noticeable, but I still quite like it.

As soon as it is poured into the glass, esters and fruit immediately fill the nose. The Jamaica influence remains present on the palate at first and then turns into honey. Alcohol is already present and warms the finish with dry fruits. Really great for the price

Beautiful nose. Ester notes characterize the picture and the involvement from Jamaica can no longer be denied. A similar impression on the palate, although the rum convinces me even more here. I wouldn't have thought that not all the parts come from Jamaica. A super sipping rum and considering the price 😱 no brainer Thanks @bananajoe for the sample

Edit: tried it again in MaiTai and CubaLibre until the bottlekill. There it convinced me more than pure, so it was allowed to take the hurdle to very good. Very good performance for the price as a mixer I bought it for the price, but I wasn't really convinced by it. After a long time in the glass, it developed an off note for me, which unfortunately I can't pinpoint exactly, but it still bothers me. I was also a little enthusiastic at first, but after tasting it several times, it simply ends up as a mixer.

At first I was skeptical whether such a "blend" could work... After tasting it, I came to the clear conclusion YES. The nose is nice and fruity and funky with a few herbal notes. On the palate there's a bit more going on, with nice spicy notes added to the funky ester aroma ... Some mint and eucalyptus somehow fit together quite well. In the Mai Tai it scores a remarkable 3/5 .

Very esterized profile for this rum. Ripe fruit, pineapple, glue. No doubt about its provenance. On the palate, biting alcohol. Then esters, pepper, ripe fruit. Pleasant, but the alcohol is insufficiently integrated. The finish brings more gourmand and sweet notes. Pleasant.

Nice Hampden nose, but very soft in the mouth. Not enough expression. Almost no finish. Still enjoyable easy drinking rum.

Read full review →I must admit, reading the description of this as a blend of South American Rum and Hampden I was apprehensive. But this is just really damn good. Tons of fruit, buttery popcorn, lots of spices. Its just a classic tasting rum with enough of that high ester funk to make it a little more interesting. This is one of those rums that rides that line of want to drink all the time casually but also to sit there and dissect it.
