Velier Mount Gay Warren Khong Mount Gilboa 2008
Blind, you'd never call this Barbados — several tasters guessed Jamaican or even Calvados. At 66% it's a beast: orange peel, dry wood, herbs and roasted notes, with tropical fruit and a green-apple tang underneath. The alcohol runs hot from nose to finish, so give it 30 minutes and a few drops of water. Most who stick with it come away impressed.

Another attempt to like a Mount Gay =D The nose is a bit pungent, otherwise brings aromas of orange peel, herbs and a strong brandy barrel influence. The barrel influence is even more pronounced on the palate. Here the rum almost tastes like a blend of brandy/rum with a strong herbal influence. The finish is long and dry and again brandy... I like good brandy and here the barrel influence fits quite well and is simply delicious. I can't really place the Mount Gay distillate here. Second tasting: +6 points (brandy can also be quite good)

Powerful with intense impact from the cask. Very nice to see this bottling out of MG.

05.04.2024 Mount Gay Extreme Rare online tasting mit Dirk. Restating this one and still like it a lot. It has some nice edges and once rested the ABV integration is amazing. I think the error I made upon the last tasting was going at it too fast. This time I rested it for an hour and it changed character. ------------------------- I had hoped this would be another top runner, but unfortunately the tannins and wood dominates far too much. The alcohol also burns and not in a good way. A few drops of water will help a little but not enough.

Review by mto75
On the nose and palate a lot of wood barrel and roasted aromas. The 66% ABV are also clearly perceptible. Overall, pretty rough, which in turn makes him but also interesting.
Review by Righrum
One of the best mount gay velier. The high abv is noticeable throughout all the sipping experience, but it's not an issue. On the nose, vanilla, marzipan and solvent, along with some orange peel that we find also drinking when the abv hits pretty hard
Review by Oliver
Exciting, but not quite my cup of tea. A little too wild and herbal. Quite alcoholic on the nose. An exciting mixture of woody spiciness and fruity papaya and orange peel on the palate.

Quick note: even if it is from Barbados, it is leagues away from any Bajan rum I have ever tried..way more earthy and grassy, with this Basil note on the palate that is rather unique. I would like to thank this community in encouraging to open and split this little, interesting gem!

First I have to say that I’m not the biggest MG fan so far for some reason. I do think that this was amongst the better ons that I’ve tasted. Found it woody the alcohol was too much present. It was good but not very good, so for me less than 8. 6/10/24: second time to taste it. Pepper and too much burn
Review by Jarek

Very intense in flavor. I liked it ... a completely different number to the Foursquare Tritpych tasted at the same time, which was also delicious but more of the round variety.
Review by Johnny Rumcask

A MG with quite different facets. On the nose it is still quite restrained, but on the palate it is quite complex: sweetness, spices, fruit and some wood spoil the palate, in the finish is a beautiful fruitiness of sour cherry ... one of the clearly better Mount Gays ... but: the alcohol is unfortunately from the nose to the finish just too dominant ... although the rum was almost an hour in the glass ... the alcohol is always extfem present
Review by Vinsdorf
This is the example that higher abv does not mean better taste. It is too strong and all the flavors are quite hidden.

I used to have a bottle of this. Tasting this again thanks to Philip. For me this one of the most heavy rums I ever had, even more then rums with ABV 80+%. Never start with this. This is a rum you apriciate after a few rums otherwise it's too alcoholic. Maybe misses some complexity, but this is a rum strong in flavours. Very enjoyable and nice one to have on your shelf.

Review by jamdram
Surprised this doesn’t get higher marks. It’s a wonderfully complex and balanced drop. Watermelon and rich tropical fruit, some leathery & lactic notes, with woody, spicy undertones. Punchy alcohol & decent sweet/sour finish.

72 points. Mount Gay is a distillery that I never had much interest in and only have a few samples of. I believe that this is the first MG that I have tasted and it isn’t a very good start. Alcoholic, herbal, orange pealings, lots of wood, no harmony at all. Not for me. I’ll have to dig out my other MG samples to give this distillery another chance.

Fan-tas-tisch! Was ein toller Rum! Nase komplex, Holz, trocken, lecker; Zunge genauso, toller Rum, sehr lecker

21/01/2026: tasting at home. This rum is a beast, but not always in a positive way unfortunately. Sipping neat, the nose is rather alcoholic and sharp, the palate is wild. It's more complex than I'm used to from MG, so it deserves credit for that. Give it time to settle down and add a few drops of water.

barva zlata vůně - velmi výrazné žluté ovoce, broskve, meruňky, technická, až do jamajských vůní chuť - silná, žluté ovoce a techničnost. Ve slepé degustaci bych hádal velmi dobrý Clarendon! Dlouhý ovocný závěr! Sakra, to je dobrota!!👌
Review by Basti

Review by Mirco
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Surprisingly herbaceous, woody and intense! Would I blindly not type Barbados! Alcohol could be better integrated and for me personally it is too much wood.

The nose is slightly fruity and herbal. Not clearly identifiable. However, the orange peel comes out on the palate. I can also taste the iodine influence. Delicious rum. Recommended.
