Mount Gay Eclipse
Most people land in the same place: this is a mixer first, a sipper second. Expect vanilla, caramel and light oak, with a young, slightly hot edge — a few reviewers call it thin or "charmless supermarket rum." But plenty keep a bottle around as their "bar staple," and it shines in a daiquiri, sour, or rum and cola. Just don't expect much depth neat.

How does Mount Gay Eclipse taste?
Aggregated from 176 community reviews.
Light young Bajan, best in the mix Loved as a cheap, easy mixer for daiquiris and cola; most agree it's too light and alcoholic to sip seriously. A few enjoy it neat, but it splits the room.

My bar staple rum

Neutral alcohol with rum notes. Suitable for cola, but there are better ones. Characterless supermarket rum.

This is one of the rums I have probably had the most of over time. A rum developed in 1911 and used in many mixers, which is where i learned about it in my teens way back. Not a super good sipper when you're used to the better Barbadian rums, but a very good choice in mixers. Have many memories both good and bad about this rum 🤣 Many a hangover have been traced back to this particular rum.

JoA beautiful base distillate. Has something of pastry with light fruity notes. But not yet harmonious. I'm used to better from English distilleries. Good value for money. Very good for mixing.

Milde rauchige Note, leichter Rum ohne starke Eindrücke. Weicher Abgang. Preislich sehr günstig. Preis-Leistungs Rum

Entrée de gamme de chez Mount Gay. On y retrouve les marqueurs de la distillerie mais plutôt fondus et discrets. Pas d'intérêt majeur. Mais pas désagréable pour autant. Ça peut être sympa en cocktail j'imagine. Correct

Really nice sipping rum
Review by Decky Hicks Doughty
The nose is a bit sharp but past that there are some pleasant floral notes along with some generic wood, vanilla stuff. The palate is quite sweet but light in other notes. More vanilla and oak from the nose. A touch of smoke and ginger on the finish though it doesn't hang around for long. It's not unpleasant and you can see how with a bit more time this will become something like Mount Gay Black Barrel. It's not there yet though. Too much young, industrial tasting column still lightness going on. Cheap though.

Best for mixing

The nose is the best part of this rum. It is light to medium in intensity, but has a nice array of caramel, banana, vanilla, and coconut. The taste and finish fall very flat for me. The taste is simple with a short finish
Review by Trinkfluencer
With drops of water or meltwater comes through a lot of sweetness, which I can not taste pure out so. Even too sweet.
Review by Gil Firth
Well this is ok. Pretty mild. Other stuff from Barbados are better for beginners. Its ok.

Trying this one after the Plantation Grande Reserve. I like this one more, it's a lot less sweet and the 43% abv is also a nice upgrade. This one could be nice for whisky drinkers that want to try a rum for a change.

Pretty harsh ethyl note on the nose. Sweet (almost cloying) and a little abrasive on the palate. A little vanilla. Very thin body. Short finish. Tasted alongside Barbancourt 8 year

Wouldn't have been on my shortlist for a rum to drink neat, but due to a lack of cheaper alternatives, it turned out to be this one at the airport. Definitely better than expected, but not particularly interesting.
Review by Krogulczyk
Pretty smooth when it comes to drinking. Sometimes gets harsh in taste. Its not bad but not good either. Acceptable quality
Review by Business Liner Ralf
Today at the bar times approved to test. Had promised me more of it, because it was advertised in the stores so. Pleasantly light in taste, but me too alcoholic both in smell and taste!
Review by Daniel
Very thin vanilla, wood and minimal fruit notes.Biting attack, slightly fruity and wood notes can be heard.Long, warm slightly bitter finish. In total, you notice the short storage time. Little character.

My absolute classic and how I got into rum (after mis-fires with the spiced rums you invariably start with). Can’t believe it has taken me this long to record a tasting. On the nose it has caramel, vanilla, nutmeg and raisins. On the palate - similar to nose but wood comes through. Finish - the wood takes over. It isn’t fantastic but it is superbly priced and makes a great rum and Pepsi max, so I’ll keep coming back to this.

Loses presence with coke. Not for sipping.

Read full review →This has perhaps an extra edge of bitterness in the after taste. It's not for me I'm afraid. Very unlikely I will be buying another bottle. If you like Eclipse then by all means give it a go.....
