Skeldon S.B.S Guyana 1997 SWR
The surprise here is how quiet a 27-year-old, 48% Guyana rum can be. Give it 30 minutes and dark chocolate, prunes, raisins, coffee and old wood slowly open up. Tasters call it elegant and "well balanced," naturally sweet without added sugar. The catch several noted: the body thins out and the finish stays short, and many wish it hit harder at higher ABV.
The community says- Dark chocolate & prunes
- Elegant, balanced
- But: Thin finish

How does Skeldon S.B.S Guyana 1997 SWR taste?
Aggregated from 33 community reviews.
Elegant but reserved dark Guyana sipper Well-liked, elegant Skeldon with dark chocolate, prunes and coffee. Most agree it needs air and wish for more ABV; body and finish come up thin, and a few prefer the 2001.

The verdict is clear: cannot compete with the younger 2001 (RX13842) in any way. Solid rum, but simply too expensive for what it offers.

A nose of old wood, dried fruit, prunes, leather and roast. The aromas are deep and heavy, but lack a little complexity. The palate is lively, slightly spicy and aromatic. Wood is very present but not dominant. Beautiful, heavy aromas of wood, leather and prunes. The finish lacks length and substance, but remains elegant. A very fine, very interesting rum, but in direct comparison with other Skeldons, it still seems less complex and less enjoyable.

A heavy dark SWR of the spicy woody kind with the necessary prune attributes... it needs time in the glass, but then it gently unfolds its aromas and can be enjoyed wonderfully. There are, of course, more complex wines. Here, however, I like the clear straightforwardness

#4675 22.03.2024 Tasting arranged by Romdeluxe and presented by Parminder S. Bhatia one of the owners of 1423. Nose Light wood, roasted, complex, balanced, dried fruits, plum, light chocolate. Palate Elegant, light roasted wood, plum, raisin, naturally sweet, light coffee, faint chocolate, faint smoke. Finish Medium to long, light roasted wood, dried fruit, light caramel, faint coffee, light chocolate. This is a very well balanced release and it] is on the sweet side without adding sugar. Price to quality can be argued but a good rum indeed.

Skeldon always arouses a certain expectation in me... I still don't understand why. Nose very spicy, chocolatey with dark fruits, leather and sweetness. On the palate it is very accessible, oily and sweet. Then immediately a peppery and very spicy taste with chocolate, allspice, slightly menthol and a harmonious barrel influence comes through. At first it reminded me of an old 1983 Panama rum. The finish is then relatively short and unspectacular. Alcohol barely perceptible on the nose and palate. All in all, good/tasty but entertaining.

An der Nase sehr verhalten, dunkle Schokolade, getrocknete Früchte, etwas Holz, Pflaume An Gaumen dann Rosine, getrocknete Pflaumen, wieder Schokolade, Kaffee, Holz.

Rate 8.2 I’m in the process of going through all the rum I have tasted. And try to give them a fair assessment from what I can remember from when I tasted them. Grade them as I would if I tried them today. Would have liked a higher ABV.

An der Nase sehr leicht, dunkle Schokolade, getrocknete Früchte, etwas Holz, Pflaume. An Gaumen dann Rosine, getrocknete Pflaumen, MilchSchokolade, Kaffee ganz leicht. Gutes Profil, aber mit mehr ABV währe er auf jedenfall besser. Danke Gunnar für die Zusammenstellung der Skeldon Samples.

As this is 27 Y.O. rum, I gave him proper time in the glass to fully open up, cca 30 minutes. During that time the aromas oscillated between notes of old wood, sweet spices, nuts and dried fruit. If I was to judge this rum just by the aroma, I would say this is an awesome rum. The taste is equally "dark" in the notes. I got loads of cocoa, wood, spices, but also some slight soury fruity notes, predominantely dries currants. The finish is very nutty, woody, also with some roasted coffee beans and event little but of maggi. I am very satisfied with this rum. If only this had like 58% ABV, this would be an absolute banger. This way, with this flavour intensity and mouthfeel, I have to rate it slightly below 9.

Chocolatey with sour cherries and prunes on the nose. Wood evident upon tasting, along with coffee and light caramel flavours and spice. Short-medium finish. Not exceptionally complex.
Review by Martin Švojgr
The flavours are dominated by caramelised sugar, coffee, cocoa, figs, and generally dried tropical fruits. But most of all, freshly pressed espresso. The colour is brutally dark, dark mahogany. I would guess the strength of the alcohol to be more than 50%. A good coffee guyana.

Gut ausbalancierter Guyana-Rum. Bietet viele schöne Facetten, mit vielen dunklen Aromen. Schöne Fassauswahl, leider gehen hier Preis und Leistung gesonderte Wege.
