This is how FS should be. A big flavourful rum with well integrated alcohol. You will find the port cask in the rum but it does not take over. It mostly adds raisins and a small (dried) red fruit note. It goes very well with the classic FS profile: vanilla, chocolate and coconut.

Incredibly tasty and dangerously palatable Foursquare. First comes the Foursquare with coconut macaroons, cinnamon cookies, Medjoul dates and banana. Then the port finish comes in full force and adds beautiful notes of cinnamon, orange peel, herbs, caramel and dried fig, but does not completely dominate the rum. Really very, very tasty and a lot of fun! For me - even if it's developed differently - it's on a par with the Plenipotenzario. At least in terms of the fun factor!!! 😃💯💣🇧🇧

To be honest, I can't understand the hype surrounding this rum. There are notes of coconut and port in the mouth and finish, which are certainly pleasing. Underneath this, however, there is mostly just the column still-driven, boring, typical FS distillate. Alcohol is still very present on the palate - even after 30 minutes of standing time. For me, this is one of the better FS bottlings, but I still don't warm to FS.

First impression: Oh yes!!! After the failure with the Raconteur, which I personally didn't like that much, only the Absolutio. The combination of bourbon and port barrel works really well in my opinion. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. Nice and soft and velvety to drink, beautiful dark color and pretty curtains in the glass. At 179€, it's also cheaper than its predecessor. From what I remember of the Velier Foursquare Crosstasting, it stands out from the others and would be at the top of my list. I think this will be my new favorite Foursquare.

Ausnahmsweise ein Foursquare, der mich wirklich überzeugt. Das Port-Finish ist gut integriert und verleiht dem Rum zusätzliche Tiefe, ohne sich aufzudrängen. Today there are two Foursquare: 1. covenant: This one tastes like it looks. Lots of dark fruit, somewhat leathery and dry on the palate. The cask influence is very strong, almost too strong. You have to know what you're getting into, but if you like it, you won't be disappointed. The alcohol is well integrated. Delicious Foursquare that I could imagine really enjoying from time to time! 2nd Absolutio: Awesome piece! There are no surprises on the nose or palate in terms of aromas. Mouth-filling, starts silky and pleasantly oily towards the finish. Pleasantly (dry) woody and chocolaty-fruity, great balance. The finish is very long and offers an interplay between dried fruit wrapped in chocolate and wood. I particularly like rums with these long, great finishes and that's what makes this rum for me! The color in the glass is already very impressive! Deep mahogany with red-brown reflections. The nose is full of juicy dark raisins, fully ripe banana and spice. The port cask is also easily recognizable (heavy sweet port). Also reminds me of maraschino cherries. The port cask has rounded off the rum very well and, in my opinion, fits in very well with the Foursquare profile. On the palate, the rum is consistent with the nose. The medium to long finish brings no surprises, everything is very balanced, round and pleasing. I'm not quite sure how to rate this rum. The overall impression is very good in any case. However, the port influence seems quite dominant to me. It's as if Foursquare had been mixed with port (wet cask?). Compared to other FS I know, it is very expressive, intense and round.

The nose is simply great. All the FS markers are there, plus a slight port wine note that is not too intrusive. Nice and creamy and round on the palate with a top integrated ABV. The finish is also subtly port-like. For me, one of the best FS. Edit: After the 3rd tasting, I'm no longer quite as euphoric as I was at first. Definitely needs a lot of time in the glass to develop. In direct comparison with some other FS bottlings, the taste does stand out somewhat. Edit: After multiple tastings still at the top. The wife also likes it very much 😊

Yummy 🤤🤤 For me, this is easily among the top five rums from Foursquare. The alcohol is better integrated than in most of their other releases — smooth, balanced, almost seamless. I truly loved this blend. For me, Foursquare and a Port finish are a perfect match — a harmony of depth, warmth, and quiet elegance. 😎🥃

Wow, the Redoutable gets some competition as the best cask strength for me :-) Phenomenally round nose, reminiscent of a wonderfully fruity box of chocolates enhanced with spices. On the palate, fruity, caramel, spicy, very roasted, strong cask influence. Medium-long finish again very fruity with roasted nuts and vanilla. Not bad, on the contrary: excellent. For me, it scores about as well as the Triptych. Even though their profiles are quite different. The Absolutio definitely has the longer finish. Compared to other cask strengths with a Port finish, the Absolutio is clearly stronger. Also better than the MG Port.

Spirits Museum Tasting 29th of March 2025. A powerful but not aggressive nose, complex, with wood varnish, port cask, overripe fruit, red fruit and a pastry side with coconut. On the palate, the Port influence is clear, but blends perfectly with the other aromas: vanilla, cask, dried and tropical fruits. The pastry side that sometimes weighs down Foursquare is well framed here and adds complexity. The finish is balanced and moderately long. A very, very fine Foursquare, in the same league as Sassafras and Plenipotensario.

The nose invites you to explore the aromas again and again - in addition to the depth of the tropically aged rums, the ex-port barrel adds a very pleasant fruity note that creates an extremely rounded overall picture of wood, coconut, vanilla sugar, dried plum and spices. On the palate, the alcohol comes through more clearly without appearing unbalanced. Crisp spiciness, a very appealing blend of caramel, vanilla, coconut and dark chocolate as well as rather gentle port wine aromas flank the barrel influence, which is complemented by a light tobacco-like note on the finish. This is indeed a great pleasure and catapults the Absolutio - nomen est omen - into the absolute top class of the Foursquares I know. Very tasty!

Very good Port-FS, hardly any bitterness as is usually the case with some Port-Casks. Relatively unspectacular finish. Very soft and flattering if you give it time. As always, those who like Foursquare will like this one. If you don't like FS, you won't be convinced by this one either.

9:On the nose, the first impression we get is the classical Bajan spectre, with all coconut, butterscotch, dried fruits, bourbon touch, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, toasted wood... All very tempting 😋. Going into more roasted/medicinal waters with roasted nuts, baking spices, some pastry, milk chocolate, port and nail polish, nicely balanced. Aeration gives us, strangely, glue note, then goes in the territory of vegetal notes with fennel and celery with some flowery touch, becoming more dry with peanut note after a nice rest🙂. 8,9:On the palate, the attack is strong, first a bit unbalanced as it is astrigent, salty, spicy. When the tornado calms down, we get butterscotch, roasted nuts, chocolate, coconut, dried fruits, vanilla, the wood is very toasted, it quickly becomes dry and a bit bitter. Out of a nowhere it is citrusy with bourbon touch and becoming more and more roasted with some metallic note and after a while the wood is a bit charred. Well, expected more.... 8,8:The finish is full of toasted wood, dry, with some dried fruits, caramel, burnt sugar, here we also get some charred wood after... Edit:30.5.25, really buttery on the palate, 22.2.2026, an upgrade to 8.9

This is top class Foursquare in my opinion, one of the best I've had to date. It fills the mouth beautifully with a lovely oily texture! Very rich and full with unmistakable foursquare DNA, just lifted to another level. Chocolates, vanilla and wood with wonderfully integrated alcahol. A definite must for any fan of foursquare.

The Absolutio has to prove itself against the Patrimonio and the Sassafrass. All three are matured differently, so it's interesting to see the differences. The Absolutio 10 Bourbon / 5 Port, the Patrimonio 14 Bourbon / Sherry (blend), the Sassafrass 3 Bourbon / 11 Cognac. In terms of color, the Absolutio is the darkest, followed by the Patrimonio, the Sassafrass is significantly lighter than both. On the nose, the Absolutio has cherry wood, also quite fruity (red fruits), toffee, dusty cocoa powder. The Patrimonio goes in a similar direction, but seems a little lighter (something like orange zest comes through). The Sassafrass is clearly different, much more oaky and vanilla. The Absolutio is very present on the palate with its high ABV, plus a strong spiciness, coffee and toasted aromas. Conclusion: successful balance, the port cask does not dominate due to the long bourbon ageing. The Absolutio can definitely hold its own with its two rivals!

Unusual experiment: mysterious RX16506 vs. renowned RX18937 😳 Why? Because I tasted the RX16506 the day before yesterday with Berlin rum friends and we agreed that the rum could have been a Foursquare blind. So I thought I'd compare it with a real Foursquare 😉. Well, and what can I say: The Thai one is excellent! It's even more present on the nose than the Foursquare. On the palate, it really comes down to the form of the day or personal preference: the Thailänder is strong and spicy with lots of chocolate, while the Absolutio impresses with its smoothness and fine port influence. For today I would say: a draw, both 87 points - bämm! And no, unfortunately I have nothing left of the Thailander. 🤷🏽♂️😉

Very dark color and great nose - relief after pouring. The port wine influence is not too strong and does not overpower the rum - in fact it complements it. Dark, raisin, dried fruit, coconut, cask, cocoa, vanilla, varnish with spices some praline, coffee and port. Very rich and dark, but still typically Foursquare. A great success. On the palate, the promise of the nose is kept. Possibly still something pleasantly nutty. Convinces me right away much more than I would have expected from port wine double maturation. The alcohol is very well integrated and the mouthfeel is soft and velvety. The question now is how it will fare with a little oxidation. Especially with wine finishes, the rum often changes a lot in my opinion.

I like it very much! Typical Foursquare profile with a clear coconut and port here. Unfortunately, the proportion of columns is a little too high for me. If there were a pure pot from FS, this would certainly raise FS to another level.

The aging in port cask gives it a darker side than the other foursquare coffees! Unlike the other coffees, dried fruits and dates come into play with a nice vinous part! As usual, the balance of the rum is perfect..hallmark of this distillery!

#4982 18.12.2024 Enjoying a few samples at home. Nose Wood, fruity, light caramel, medium intense, prunes, light chocolate, spice, light anise. Palate Balanced, round, wood, light roasted, light coconut, light earthy, raisin, light cherry, light chocolate. Finish Long, wood, light tannins, light coconut, chocolate, spice, light earthy, raisin. A really well balanced rum with good ABV integration. The empty glass has nice caramel, light leather and light wine notes.

Tiefe Schokoladennoten, dunkel und kräftig. Frucht ist zwar vorhanden, bleibt aber im Hintergrund. Das Profil wird von dunklen Röstaromen, Holz und einer schönen Fassreife geprägt. Auch Nuss(Hasel) kommt für mich immer wieder durch. Der Rum wirkt schwer, ölig und bringt viel Mundfülle mit. Grundsätzlich gefällt mir die Tiefe des Profils sehr gut. Lediglich der Alkohol hinterlässt auf der Zungenspitze ein leicht kribbelndes Gefühl, was für mich etwas Abzug gibt. Es ist meine vielleicht 4 Flasche Velier-Foursquare. Je mehr ich probiere, desto zwiespältiger wird mein Eindruck. Qualitativ sind das ohne Zweifel sehr gute Rums. Gleichzeitig merke ich aber, dass sie mich selten dazu einladen, selbstverständlich wieder zum Glas zu greifen. Der Reiz nimmt über die Zeit ab und vermag mich nicht dauerhaft zu fesseln. Als Sample finde ich sie spannend. Das ist etwas widersprüchlich aber es ging mir bei jeder Abfüllung bisher so.

This truly fantastic rum from Mr. Richard Seale and Foursquare in Barbados was in slot #24 in my 2025 advent calendar. From the nose through the palate to the long finish it’s round, spicy, fruity, woody and a little roasted with consistent aromas and flavors of port, vanilla, coconut, raisins and oak. Besides that you can find scents of redfruit, cinnamon, cocoa, nutmeg and flavors of prunes, chocolate, caramel and mocha.

Wow, Foursquare has come up with something really nice. I can only confirm the previous reviews in full. Even on the nose, this rum is a lot of fun. The interplay of aromas between red fruits, chocolate flavors and a slight spiciness are exactly my thing. After a few minutes, a great amarena cherry aroma. The port barrel also leaves behind great aromas. Ultra-soft on the palate despite the brute 62%. Here, too, the very balanced interplay of aromas between fruit, chocolate notes and barrel influence is convincing. Alcohol perfectly integrated. Among the top 5 rums I have tasted so far, I am glad to have got hold of another bottle.

This Foursquare is quite a house number. The rich nose brings many fruity aromas such as prune, cherry and of course port. Then there are warm Christmas spices such as cinnamon and vanilla as well as nutty accents. It is excitingly intense in the mouth. The fruity port wine notes merge into chocolate and dried dates as well as honey. The warm palette of spices also comes out well here and skilfully interacts with the perfectly integrated alcohol. Everything is complemented by nutty, woody notes through to coffee. The long, intense finish is again beautifully fruity and spicy. Cherry, cask, chocolate and mocha fade out with a nutty woodiness. The initial marzipan note is now reminiscent of coconut. I am very impressed by this creation from Foursquare.

Wonderful Foursquare. A real plank. Alcohol nicely integrated. Thick, broad and heavy body! Port wine note is dominant but well flanked by wood notes, fruit and a little spice. Unfortunately the Portomonai is only enough for a 5cl sample! Re-election!

Great smell, cocoa, cinnamon and also the slightly sweet smell of port can be perceived. In the mouth, the sweetness of the port wine, dried fruit paired with spice and wood. Nicely intense due to the very well-integrated alcohol. I like it very, very much!

Update: just tried it again and stand by my first impression. This won’t keep my interest the whole bottle down. As a (double) sample it’s good but my 200€ goes elsewhere, sorry. The “business panic” bottle of the moment. If you have never had a Velier foursquare just buy it you will be very happy but I aim this review more for people who have already tried most of them. I am getting a bit worried about this series because since the Patrimonio I’m noticing less and less distinct character and more of a safe and neutral FS profile taking center stage. The port cask makes this thicker and rounder in texture than the raconteur but still nowhere near as much as the triptych (which almost went too far in having a molasses syrupy taste). But this is exactly the issue I’m seeing, there’s no risk taking here. Other than the shell of the port finish there are no clearly unique base notes like the tobacco note of the pleni, the molasses of the trip, or even the astringency of the sassa. It sits kind of neutral and just surrounded by the cask finish, kind of like the raconteur. It’s a great bottle and I’ll probably buy it, but can we have some more risk-taking next time? Please dare to be unique, even if it becomes another Principia.

The new hot shit from Barbados. It hasn't really arrived in Germany yet and is already a hype. But is it really that good? For me, it has an unbelievably great nose. I'm normally more of a palate person, but more on that in a moment. The port gives the rum a lovely depth and complexity without overpowering it as is so often the case. It is pleasantly soft and warm on the nose, which is not always to be expected given the strength of the alcohol. Aromatically, it is mainly what you would expect from Foursquare in combination, but I would particularly like to emphasize the enormous spice and berry notes, which I really like. These can also be found on the palate and although I'm usually a team palate person, as already mentioned, I enjoy this rum less there than on the nose. Even after more than 30 minutes in the glass, the alcohol is still quite noticeable in the mouth and there is also a strong acidity from the barrel and port. As I am not particularly fond of acidity in rum, this bottling loses a few points for me. All in all, this is still a really strong and outstanding bottling from the enormous mass of Foursquare bottlings, but I can't go along with the top ratings this time. Nevertheless, it is better than most of what I have drunk from Barbados and also from Foursquare so far! A strong piece!

Very tasty! The foundation is a typical Foursquare profile, with lots of coconut. The port wine finish adds beautiful notes of dried fruit. The alcohol is better integrated than in the Raconteur, the wood is better balanced than in the Destino. Overall, it lies between the two for me.

The aroma of the open glass fills the room as soon as you breathe in. The nose is filled with dried fruit and banana. On the palate, even more dried fruit alongside the typical Foursquare flavors such as coconut, caramel and glue. The port finish complements the typical Foursquare profile perfectly, the alcohol is also quite well integrated. Nevertheless, a little water makes it even rounder and better for my taste. The finish is medium long with dried fruit, caramel and toffee. One of the best Foursquare I've had the pleasure of tasting so far and I like it much better than the ECS Detente. The hype is real.

Tasted it a second time yesterday and must say it's pretty good, which is to be expected at this price. The maturation in port barrels gives it a darker side than the other Foursquares! Unlike the others, dried fruit and dates come into play with a nice amount! As always, the balance of the rum is perfect - the hallmark of this distillery!

My favorite metal-bar in Copenhagen, which has a wide variety of whisky, finds some good stuff once in a while. A nose of dried fruits, vanilla and hints of barrel, and notes of dark chocolate, port, tropical and dried fruits and a sweet finish. ABV is very well integrated

Great combination, the port cask fits perfectly with the classic Foursquare profile. Beautifully intense & balanced with a great nose that continues on the palate. A little hot at the beginning, but it mellows with time. Perhaps also due to the freshly opened bottle.

- Fantastic sample, sorry I missed buying a bottle when I could. - Wow! One of the few times I ‘m glad to live in Sweden. Got hold of s bottle when Systembolaget just released a batch. - New day and comparing to a few ECS bottles. Very different beast indeed and lots of more chocolate and balance. Very good indeed and the alcohol is integrated perfectly as this is the strongest of today’s bottles but feels like the opposite. - New day(250228) and I agree with myself above. - 250315 So happy I have a bottle. - 250718 Jusr got to bump this a . 1 point - 240912: Different day and this is really balanced and nice. Will let it stay at its point for today. - 251024: Timpa served me my own bottle in a blind tasting and this is realy really good, a lot sweeter than I remember.

Tasted again today after about a year. The time seems to have done the sample good. There are also red fruits on the nose and chocolate in the taste and finish. The alcohol is well integrated.

I've only tasted a little so it's hard to tell, but the sherry notes are dominant. The berry fruit nuances are strong, not like Foursquare. I love the combination of sweet flavors and smooth mouthfeel. I have a bottle, but I'm tempted to keep it unopened! I think someone who enjoys both Jamaica and Foursquare will definitely like it, and for those who are tired of the typical Foursquare OB style, this is a beautiful bottling :)

Verdict: nice and complex, great drop but a nod too tannic (spice and oak). Quite wood driven , spice, dried fruit, and hint of red fruit. 87 points. Nose: oaky, on planks and waxed furniture. Quite some red (forest) fruit, dried fruit (mainly prune and date), leather, a bit of resin, orange. Palate: sweet-sour, a bit artificial, raisin, forest fruit, prune, spice, tobacco, plenty of wood. Slightly acidic on orange juice and kumquat. A hint of spice. Finish: medium, a bit drying and tannic from spice (ginger, pepper), and oak. Prune, date, wax, orange.

One of my favorite Velier Foursquare co-bottlings. Complex rum that also tames itself well after the first couple of sips, though. Very balanced with nicely integrated alcohol. The influence of aging in ex-port barrels is quite pronounced and you have to like it but I like it a lot. If I have to find a flaw for me it is the finish that does not have the persistence I would have expected. In any case it is a very good rum. To be bought at least two bottles!

A wonderfully full-bodied, robust, and well-balanced Foursquare rum. All the FS characteristics are beautifully showcased here. Port notes emerge delightfully fleetingly, but certainly not excessively! A true connoisseur.

This one is heavy on the sweet wine and I really like it! Probably my favorite Foursquare expression that I tried alongside Redoubtable. Once poured into the glass it disappears quickly.
