Renegade Cuvée Nova (All-Island)
The odd part hits first: a few tasters catch plastic and solvent, even faint medicinal notes on the nose, before it settles into more familiar territory. Underneath sit dried fruit, sugarcane, cinnamon and a surprising jolt of fresh pineapple juice, with dark chocolate and toasted oak on the palate. A young Grenadian cane-juice rum — atypical, a little quirky, and easy to drink.

Grenade is one of those terroirs that are emerging in the world of rum and leave no one indifferent. This cuvée has strange aromas halfway between vegetal and phenolic, some slightly medicinal notes that come close to a form of plastic, all wrapped up in more conventional flavors (vanilla, chili, cinnamon, baked apple, dried fruit, sugarcane and toasty woodiness). Original and strange. The palate confirms the nose's impressions. The spicy woodiness, with its hints of toast and leather, meets this phenolic-vegetal combination, giving a surprising aftertaste. Fruit is also more present, with berries and pineapple. The rum lacks a little grip on the palate. The alcohol is well integrated into the whole. The finish is not very long, but merely affirms the feeling of a young, atypical but rather promising rum. Sugar cane, dried fruit, spices and roasted notes combine with mineral aromas for a zany but not unpleasant mix. It will be interesting to see how these profiles play out after a few years' ageing.

A decent young grenadian rum with some pleasant qualities, which at the same time lacks the complexity to score higher for me. On the nose, I got some woody and dried fruit notes, along with sugarcane and a touch of cinnamon. The palate follows up with dark chocolate, woody undertones, and a hint of pineapple and berries, but it doesn’t quite come together in a way that wows. It’s definitely a solid bottle to try, good both for mixing in drinks and sipping neat, but it’s not something that’ll blow you away. A respectable 7.0, but I was hoping for a bit more depth to really elevate it. Still, worth checking out if you're curious!
