The Whisky Agency T.D.L Heads & Tails, Canada 1999

Blind, most tasters would call this a whisky, not a 21-year Trinidad rum. The 1999 vintage reads Spanish and cognac-like: light caramel, some chocolate, a few yellow fruits, then a sharp, dry, astringent edge. The common complaint is that it feels watered down, with a thin body and faint flavor for its age. Divisive, and clearly off the usual TDL profile people expect.

The community says
  • Dry and cognac-like
  • But: Thin, watered-down feel
  • But: Faint flavor

On the nose the profile is distinctly different to the 2000s TDLs. Less complexity with a more Spanish style showing. Caramel, some chocolate accompanied by some fruits. Alcohol is a bit to present even after plenty time in the glas. Overall not bad, but also not overly exiting. On the palate, this one is very smooth to drink - to frame it positively. The rum feels watered down leaving a rather unexciting profile. Sweetness, some chocolate with hints of tropical fruits.

So this is really supposed to be a rum and then also a T.D.L? I'm really not sure, if it wasn't on the sample and it had been a blind tasting, the conclusion would definitely have been bad whisky. No, whatever it is didn't taste good to me and ended up down the drain instead of in my mouth or even in cola. Not drinkable for me

I don't think it's that bad, but TDL is usually better. For me, the nose consists mainly of whisky, otherwise some alcohol is still recognizable. The palate is then very sharp-edged, otherwise perhaps some chocolate and caramel are recognizable.

Not extra bad rum, but definitely not TDL profile Beautiful matt for a bottle under 100e. Alcohol can be felt, but very drinkable. I recommend it even to beginner rums for discovering new flavours. TDL mate is an unmistakable taste that you will never get tired of.

Phew, so if all TDLs from the 1999 vintage, which I've never tasted before, are as whisky-like as this bottling, then the vintage can stay stolen from me. No comparison to the bottlings of the following millennium.

Now the T.D.L . I also find this rum rather weak, I wonder if it is rum at all. It tastes like a whisky. I'm not a fan of whisky. You can detect a little spice in the taste. You don't have to drink it, but if you like whisky it could be interesting.

This T.D.L is a disappointment... weak aromas on the nose, as well as on the palate... and also quite one-dimensional ... alcohol barely perceptible. The dilution is too strong. Too bad... I had expected more

The alcohol is not so present, but overall the rum has little flavor. Seems very diluted, little flavor, astringent, reminds me of a continental Clarendon. Overall, not my cup of tea.

Angostura is famous for a bottle most people never drink neat. The bitters house founded in 1824 became Trinidad's only rum distillery, and its arm Trinidad Distillers makes a clean, column-distilled, Spanish-style rum unlike the heavy funk of Jamaica or Guyana. The same plant still guards the secret recipe for the world's most famous cocktail bitters.
