First experience with La Filibuste. The high price and hype always stopped me in trying It, but It deserves a try. Complex even despite low abv, with a great sweetness of chocolate and sugar both on the nose and palate.

Ah la Flibuste de la Favorite... This distillery is once again causing controversy on social networks, and with good reason. There's enough irrefutable evidence to prove the addition of various inputs to this cuvée (spices, natural candied fruit, Cognac, sugar), which in fact puts it in the spiced rum category. In fact, since the 2001 vintage, you'll have noticed the designation "spirituous beverage based on agricultural rum" on the case and bottle. Several questions come to mind. Why did it take so long for the AOC Martinique specifications to be respected? Why doesn't La Favorite disclose the precise ingredients used in the production of their cuvées? Is the age count correct? This applies to 2001, but what about other vintages? And the other cuvées? Even today, in 2024, there is a serious lack of transparency on the part of the distillery. Out of respect for the consumer and their customers (who have been loyal to them for decades), it would be wise to disclose this information, especially in view of the price. Tasting notes are a bit tricky. This cuvée is not in the same category as the sweetened rums that are well known to the general public (Don Papa, Diplo, Dictador, Bumbu, etc.), but it is a spirit drink. The flavors that emerge from the glass come from the various additions. On the nose, vanilla, which is slightly syrupy and therefore accessible, fresh sugar cane, woody notes, candied fruits (prunes, raisins) and a fair amount of cooking spices. On the palate, we find the same markers, it's really sweet, with a honeyed sweetness, spices still sticking to the palate, then notes of liquorice and chocolate (rather milky). A relatively short finish. So yes, I had a good time, it drinks itself, but because of the various inputs I feel biased. I much prefer a rum whose organoleptic properties come solely from the aging process, without any additions.
