Mount Gay Master Select 1703 2017
Don't expect a sweet Barbados bomb — this one reads dry and leans hard on oak. Vanilla, caramel and dried fruit on the nose, then wood spice, a nutty edge and "really not very sweet" on the palate. Several tasters love the balance; a few find it heavy on the oak and a touch watery at 43%, wishing it landed nearer 50%.

I rated the precursor, the “Old Cask 1703”, quite low, probably because it was my first contact with English styled rum. Now I appreciate this rum a lot and I will probably upgrade my rating of the “Old Cask 1703” if I make a retest.

Vanilla, cookie dough, banana and soothing freshness from apple notes. A nice balanced nose, just not particularly exciting.Then in the mouth a nice tingly feeling, unfortunately a bit watered down. Now nice complex spicy notes and well-dosed woodiness. In the finish a bit short.A nobly packaged Easy Sipper, tastes good, craftsmanship impeccable. Defiantly an unexciting product and too expensive.

My favourite Barbados, it smells of vanilla and fruit, 43% is just right, if it had more it would be even better...but as it is, it is beautifully rounded and smooth.

Ein schöner und runder Mount Gay. In der Nase Holznoten, stark Eichenholzlastig, Vanille, etwas Kokosnuss. Im Geschmack auch viele Holznoten, eine gewisse Würzigkeit, Vanille schwingt mit. Ich finde ihn gut, der Triple Cask Blend schmeckt mir aber etwas besser.

A tasting at Nordic Rum and Whisky festival Copenhagen, 2022. Most of the samples were free of charge, but this one I wanted to buy a taste off. I found Notes of dried fruits, caramel and some spices. A dry aftertaste, but well-balanced

Read full review →This would have been great 10 years ago. Heck its still a very good rum but you can get better for a quarter of the price. I like Mount Gay rum a lot but they really need to move way beyond the Eclipse if they want the "aficionados" money. Safe...

An almost perfect Barbados blend. A few percent more would have stood him certainly very well. But even so I find him, provided you give him some time in the glass, extremely tasty
